We investigated the potential role of silicon in improving tolerance and decreasing cadmium (Cd) toxicity in durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. durum) either through a reduced Cd uptake or ...exclusion/sequestration in non-metabolic tissues. For this, plants were grown in hydroponic conditions for 10 days either in presence or absence of 1 mM Si and for 11 additional days in various Cd concentrations (0, 0.5, 5.0 and 50 μM). After harvesting, morphological and physiological parameters as well as elemental concentrations were recorded. Cadmium caused reduction in growth parameters, photosynthetic pigments and mineral nutrient concentrations both in shoots and roots. Shoot and root contents of malate, citrate and aconitate increased, while contents of phosphate, nitrate and sulphate decreased with increasing Cd concentrations in plants. Addition of Si to the nutrient solution mitigated these adverse effects: Cd concentration in shoots decreased while concentration of Cd adsorbed at the root cell apoplasmic level increased together with Zn uptake by roots. Overall, total Cd uptake decreased in presence of Si. There was no co-localisation of Cd and Si either at the shoot or at the root levels. No Cd was detected in leaf phytoliths. In roots, Cd was mainly detected in the cortical parenchyma and Si at the endodermis level, while analysis of the outer thin root surface of the plants grown in the 50 μM Cd + 1 mM Si treatment highlighted non-homogeneous Cd and Si enrichments. These data strongly suggest the existence of a root localised protection mechanism consisting in armoring the root surface by Si- and Cd-bearing compounds and in limiting root–shoot translocation.
MAIN CONCLUSION : Aqueous Si limits Cu uptake by a Si-accumulating plant via physicochemical mechanisms occurring at the root level. Sufficient Si supply may alleviate Cu toxicity in Cu-contaminated ...soils. Little information is available on the role of silicon (Si) in copper (Cu) tolerance while Cu toxicity is widespread in crops grown on Cu-contaminated soils. A hydroponic study was set up to investigate the influence of Si on Cu tolerance in durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L.) grown in 0, 0.7, 7.0 and 30 µM Cu without and with 1.0 mM Si, and to identify the mechanisms involved in mitigation of Cu toxicity. Si supply alleviated Cu toxicity in durum wheat at 30 µM Cu, while Cu significantly increased Si concentration in roots. Root length, photosynthetic pigments concentrations, macroelements, and organic anions (malate, acetate and aconitate) in roots, were also increased. Desorption experiments, XPS analysis of the outer thin root surface (≤100 Å) and µXRF analyses showed that Si increased adsorption of Cu at the root surface as well as Cu accumulation in the epidermis while Cu was localised in the central cylinder when Si was not applied. Copper was not detected in phytoliths. This study provides evidences for Si-mediated alleviation of Cu toxicity in durum wheat. It also shows that Si supplementation to plants exposed to increasing levels of Cu in solution induces non-simultaneous changes in physiological parameters. We propose a three-step mechanism occurring mainly at the root level and limiting Cu uptake and translocation to shoots: (i) increased Cu adsorption onto the outer thin layer root surface and immobilisation in the vicinity of root epidermis, (ii) increased Cu complexation by both inorganic and organic anions such as aconitate and, (iii) limitation of translocation through an enhanced thickening of a Si-loaded endodermis.
Understanding the formation and evolution of giant planets (≥1 MJup) at wide orbital separation (≥5 AU) is one of the goals of direct imaging. Over the past 15 yr, many surveys have placed strong ...constraints on the occurrence rate of wide-orbit giants, mostly based on non-detections, but very few have tried to make a direct link with planet formation theories. In the present work, we combine the results of our previously published VLT/NaCo large program with the results of 12 past imaging surveys to constitute a statistical sample of 199 FGK stars within 100 pc, including three stars with sub-stellar companions. Using Monte Carlo simulations and assuming linear flat distributions for the mass and semi-major axis of planets, we estimate the sub-stellar companion frequency to be within 0.75–5.70% at the 68% confidence level (CL) within 20–300 AU and 0.5–75 MJup, which is compatible with previously published results. We also compare our results with the predictions of state-of-the-art population synthesis models based on the gravitational instability (GI) formation scenario with and without scattering. We estimate that in both the scattered and non-scattered populations, we would be able to detect more than 30% of companions in the 1–75 MJup range (95% CL). With the threesub-stellar detections in our sample, we estimate the fraction of stars that host a planetary system formed by GI to be within 1.0–8.6% (95% CL). We also conclude that even though GI is not common, it predicts a mass distribution of wide-orbit massive companions that is much closer to what is observed than what the core accretion scenario predicts. Finally, we associate the present paper with the release of the Direct Imaging Virtual Archive (DIVA), a public database that aims at gathering the results of past, present, and future direct imaging surveys.

Aims.
Distances are key to determining the physical properties of sources. In the Galaxy, large (> 10 000) homogeneous samples of sources for which distance are available, covering the whole Galactic ...distance range, are still missing. Here we present a catalog of velocity and distance for a large sample (> 100 000) of Hi-GAL compact sources.
Methods.
We developed a fully automatic Python package to extract the velocity and determine the distance. To assign a velocity to a Hi-GAL compact source, the code uses all the available spectroscopic data complemented by a morphological analysis. Once the velocity is determined, if no stellar or maser parallax distance is known, the kinematic distance is calculated and the distance ambiguity (for sources located inside the Solar circle) is solved with the H
I
self-absorption method or from distance–extinction data.
Results.
Among the 150 223 compact sources of the Hi-GAL catalog, we obtained a distance for 124 069 sources for the 5
σ
catalog (and 128 351 sources for the 3
σ
catalog), where

represents the noise level of each molecular spectrum used for the line detections made at 5
σ
and 3
σ
to produce the respective catalogs.
Context. The CoRoT mission was the first dedicated to the search for exoplanets from space. The CoRoT exoplanet channel observed about 163 600 targets to detect transiting planetary companions. In ...addition to the search for exoplanets, the extremely precise photometric time series provided by CoRoT for this vast number of stars is an invaluable resource for stellar studies. Because CoRoT targets are faint (11 ≤ r ≤ 16) and close to the galactic plane, only a small subsample has been observed spectroscopically. Consequently, the stellar classification of CoRoT targets required the design of a classification method suited for the needs and time frame of the mission. Aims. We describe the latest classification scheme used to derive the spectral type of CoRoT targets, which is based on broadband multi-colour photometry. We assess the accuracy of this spectral classification for the first time. Methods. We validated the method on simulated data. This allows the quantification of the effect of different sources of uncertainty on the spectral type. Using galaxy population synthesis models, we produced a synthetic catalogue that has the same properties as the CoRoT targets. In this way, we are able to predict typical errors depending on the estimated luminosity class and spectral type. We also compared our results with independent estimates of the spectral type. Cross-checking those results allows us to identify the systematics of the method and to characterise the stellar populations observed by CoRoT. Results. We find that the classification method performs better for stars that were observed during the mission-dedicated photometric ground-based campaigns.The luminosity class is wrong for less than 7% of the targets. Generally, the effective temperature of stars classified as early type (O, B, and A) is overestimated. Conversely, the temperature of stars classified as later type tends to be underestimated. This is mainly due to the adverse effect of interstellar reddening. We find that the median error on the effective temperature is less than 5% for dwarf stars classified with a spectral later than F0, but it is worse for earlier type stars, with up to 20% error for A and late-B dwarfs, and up to 70% for early-B and O-type dwarfs. Similar results are found for giants, with a median error that is lower than 7% for G- and later type giants, but greater than 25% for earlier types. Overall, we find an average median absolute temperature difference |ΔTeff| = 533 ± 6 K for the whole sample of stars classified as dwarfs and |ΔTeff| = 280 ± 3 K for the whole sample of giant stars. The corresponding standard deviation is of about 925 ± 5 K for dwarfs and 304 ± 4 K for giants. Typically for late-type stars, this means that the classification is accurate to about half a class.
The objective of this study is to ascertain the effects of the left (LV) and right (RV) ventricular lead tip position in response to cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT).
The REVERSE randomized ...trial examined the effects of CRT in patients with asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic heart failure (HF).
We analysed data collected from the active group (CRT-ON) of REVERSE in whom the precise locations of the LV and RV ventricular lead tips were determined from postoperative chest roentgenograms as part of a prespecified sub-study. LV position was classified as lateral or non-lateral, and apical or non-apical. RV position was classified as apical or non-apical. Echocardiographic LV end-systolic volume index (LVESVi), QRS duration, and clinical outcomes at 12-24 months of follow-up were evaluated with respect to the lead tip position. The primary trial endpoint was the proportion of patients with a worsened HF clinical composite response, scored as improved, unchanged, or worsened.
Totally 346 patients included in this analysis were followed for a median of 12.6 months (interquartile range: 11.9-23.9 months). The proportion of worsened HF clinical composite response did not correlate with lead position, whereas a significantly greater decrease in the powered secondary endpoint of LVESVi was observed with the non-apical vs. the apical LV lead positions. CRT-paced QRS duration was significantly shorter than at baseline in patients with lateral vs. non-lateral LV position, as well non-apical vs. apical LV position. The incidence of composite endpoint of death and first hospitalization for HF was lower in the LV lateral than in the non-lateral (HR 0.44; 95% CI 0.19-0.99; P= 0.04), and in the LV non-apical than in the apical group (HR 0.27; 95% CI 0.11-0.63; P= 0.001). No significant differences were observed between RV apical and non-apical positions of the lead tip.
A more favourable outcome of CRT with regard to LV reverse remodelling and the composite of time to death or first HF hospitalization was observed when the LV lead tip was implanted in the lateral wall, away from the apex, while the position of the RV lead tip was indifferent. Abstract
Semiconductor spin qubits based on spin–orbit states are responsive to electric field excitations, allowing for practical, fast and potentially scalable qubit control. Spin electric ...susceptibility, however, renders these qubits generally vulnerable to electrical noise, which limits their coherence time. Here we report on a spin–orbit qubit consisting of a single hole electrostatically confined in a natural silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor device. By varying the magnetic field orientation, we reveal the existence of operation sweet spots where the impact of charge noise is minimized while preserving an efficient electric-dipole spin control. We correspondingly observe an extension of the Hahn-echo coherence time up to 88 μs, exceeding by an order of magnitude existing values reported for hole spin qubits, and approaching the state-of-the-art for electron spin qubits with synthetic spin–orbit coupling in isotopically purified silicon. Our finding enhances the prospects of silicon-based hole spin qubits for scalable quantum information processing.
Opioid peptides are critically involved in a variety of physiological functions necessary for adaptation and survival, and as such, understanding the precise actions of endogenous opioid peptides ...will aid in identification of potential therapeutic strategies to treat a variety of disorders. However, few analytical tools are currently available that offer both the sensitivity and spatial resolution required to monitor peptidergic concentration fluctuations in situ on a time scale commensurate with that of neuronal communication. Our group has developed a multiple-scan-rate waveform to enable real-time voltammetric detection of tyrosine containing neuropeptides. Herein, we have evaluated the waveform parameters to increase sensitivity to methionine-enkephalin (M-ENK), an endogenous opioid neuropeptide implicated in pain, stress, and reward circuits. M-ENK dynamics were monitored in adrenal gland tissue, as well as in the dorsal striatum of anesthetized and freely behaving animals. The data reveal cofluctuations of catecholamine and M-ENK in both locations and provide measurements of M-ENK dynamics in the brain with subsecond temporal resolution. Importantly, this work also demonstrates how voltammetric waveforms can be customized to enhance detection of specific target analytes, broadly speaking.
