Alkaline direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs) represent an efficient energy conversion device for sustainable ethanol fuel. In this study, a design with new structural parameters for the anodic flow ...field of the alkaline DEFC was modeled with the aid of computational fluid dynamics and was then actually constructed. Single-cell tests were performed to evaluate the impact of the developed design on fuel cell performance. The results show that fuel cell performance significantly increased when using the improved design in the low-temperature range. The higher the temperature in the cell, the lower the influence of the flow field structure on performance. In addition, the influence of external factors, such as the orientation of the cell, the preheating of the fuel, and the direction of the two fuel flows relative to each other (co-current and counter-current), are shown.
The shelf-life of catalyst ink for fabricating polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) is relevant for large-scale manufacturing with unforeseen production stops. In this study, the storage effects on ...the physicochemical characteristics of catalyst ink (Pt/C, Nafion, 2-propanol, water) and subsequently manufactured catalyst layers are investigated. Sedimentation analysis showed that catalyst particles are not fully stabilized by charge interaction induced by Nafion. Acetone was found to be an oxidation product, even in freshly prepared ink with platinum catalyzing the reaction. Rotating disk electrode analysis revealed that the electrochemically active surface area is, overall, minimally increased by storage, and the selectivity towards water formation (4-electron pathway) is unharmed within the first 48 h of storage. MEAs prepared from stored ink reach almost the same current density level after conditioning via potential cycling. The open-circuit voltage (OCV) increases due to increased catalyst availability. Scanning electron microscopy and mercury intrusion porosimetry showed that with increasing acetone content, the pore structure becomes finer, with a higher specific surface area. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that this results in a more hindered mass transfer but lowered charge transfer resistance. The MEA with the highest OCV and power output and the lowest overall cell resistance was fabricated from catalyst ink stored for a duration of four weeks.
In recent years, there has been considerable interest in anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) as part of fuel cell technology. Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) provide a significant ...contribution to the development of fuel cells, particularly in terms of performance and efficiency. Polymer composite membranes composed of quaternary ammonium poly(vinyl alcohol) (QPVA) as electrospun nanofiber mats and a combination of QPVA and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) as interfiber voids matrix filler were prepared and characterized. The influence of various QPVA/PDDA mass ratios as matrix fillers on anion exchange membranes and alkaline fuel cells was evaluated. The structural, morphological, mechanical, and thermal properties of AEMs were characterized. To evaluate the AEMs' performances, several measurements comprise swelling properties, ion exchange capacity (IEC), hydroxide conductivity (σ), alkaline stability, and single-cell test in fuel cells. The eQP-PDD
acquired the highest hydroxide conductivity of 43.67 ms cm
at 80 °C. The tensile strength of the membranes rose with the incorporation of the filler matrix, with TS ranging from 23.18 to 24.95 Mpa. The peak power density and current density of 24 mW cm
and 131 mA cm
were achieved with single cells comprising eQP-PDD
membrane at 57 °C.
Crosslinked anion exchange membranes (AEMs) made from poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as a backbone polymer and different approaches to functional group introduction were prepared by means of solution ...casting with thermal and chemical crosslinking. Membrane characterization was performed by SEM, FTIR, and thermogravimetric analyses. The performance of AEMs was evaluated by water uptake, swelling degree, ion exchange capacity, OH- conductivity, and single cell tests. A combination of quaternized ammonium poly(vinyl alcohol) (QPVA) and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDMAC) showed the highest conductivity, water uptake, and swelling among other functional group sources. The AEM with a combined mass ratio of QPVA and PDDMAC of 1:0.5 (QPV/PDD0.5) has the highest hydroxide conductivity of 54.46 mS cm-1. The single fuel cell tests with QPV/PDD0.5 membrane yield the maximum power density and current density of 8.6 mW cm-2 and 47.6 mA cm-2 at 57 °C. This study demonstrates that PVA-based AEMs have the potential for alkaline direct ethanol fuel cells (ADEFCs) application.
In this work, fully polysaccharide based membranes were presented as self-standing, solid polyelectrolytes for application in anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). For this purpose, cellulose ...nanofibrils (CNFs) were modified successfully with an organosilane reagent, resulting in quaternized CNFs (CNF (D)), as shown by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Carbon-13 (C13) nuclear magnetic resonance (
C NMR), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA)/Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and ζ-potential measurements. Both the neat (CNF) and CNF(D) particles were incorporated in situ into the chitosan (CS) membrane during the solvent casting process, resulting in composite membranes that were studied extensively for morphology, potassium hydroxide (KOH) uptake and swelling ratio, ethanol (EtOH) permeability, mechanical properties, ionic conductivity, and cell performance. The results showed higher Young's modulus (119%), tensile strength (91%), ion exchange capacity (177%), and ionic conductivity (33%) of the CS-based membranes compared to the commercial Fumatech membrane. The addition of CNF filler improved the thermal stability of the CS membranes and reduced the overall mass loss. The CNF (D) filler provided the lowest (4.23 × 10
cm

) EtOH permeability of the respective membrane, which is in the same range as that of the commercial membrane (3.47 × 10

). The most significant improvement (~78%) in power density at 80 °C was observed for the CS membrane with neat CNF compared to the commercial Fumatech membrane (62.4 mW cm
vs. 35.1 mW cm
). Fuel cell tests showed that all CS-based anion exchange membranes (AEMs) exhibited higher maximum power densities than the commercial AEMs at 25 °C and 60 °C with humidified or non-humidified oxygen, demonstrating their potential for low-temperature direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC) applications.
A novel selenium-containing pyridazinyl-based soft scorpionate ligand (KTnse) was synthesized. It reacts with CoCl2 and NiCl2, yielding the first metallaboratrane complexes with selenium in their ...donor positions. Further substitution with Ag(OTf) or NaN3 allows isolation of the respective triflate or azide complexes. Reaction with Ag(OTf) leads in the case of nickel to a dinuclear, dicationic complex with a short Ni–Ni distance, while cobalt gave a mononuclear cationic species. Substitution of the chloride by azide yields with both metals the respective azide complexes. All compounds were characterized via single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Density functional theory calculations on the chloride species point to oxidized cobalt(III) and nickel(III) centers.
The direct electrochemical conversion of ethanol, a sustainable fuel, is an alternative sustainable technology of the future. In this study, membrane electrode assemblies with different electrode ...configurations for an alkaline direct ethanol fuel cell were fabricated and tested in a fuel cell device. The configurations include a catalyst-coated substrate (CCS), a catalyst-coated membrane (CCM), and a mixture of these two fabrication options. Two different anion exchange membranes were used to perform a comprehensive analysis. The fabricated CCSs and CCMs were characterized with single cell measurements, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. In addition, the swelling behavior of the membranes in alkaline solution was investigated in order to obtain information for CCM production. The results of the experimental electrochemical tests show that the CCS approach provides higher power densities (42.4 mW cm-2) than the others, regardless of the membrane type.
The sluggish kinetics of the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) and the related development of low-cost, highly active and stable anode catalysts still remains the major challenge in alkaline direct ...ethanol fuel cells (ADEFCs). In this respect, we synthesized a PdNiBi nanocatalyst on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) via a facile synthesis method. The prepared composite catalyst was physicochemically characterized by SEM, STEM, EDX, ICP-OES and XRD to analyze the morphology, particle distribution and size, elemental composition and structure. The electrochemical activity and stability towards EOR in alkaline media were examined using the thin-film rotating disk electrode technique. The results reveal well-dispersed and strongly anchored nanoparticles on the rGO support, providing abundant active sites. The PdNiBi/rGO presents a higher EOR activity and stability compared to a commercial Pd/C ascribed to a high ECSA and synergistic effects between Pd, Ni and Bi and the rGO material. These findings suggest PdNiBi/rGO as a promising anode catalyst in ADEFC applications.

The utilization of graphene as a catalyst support has garnered significant attention due to its potential for enhancing fuel cell performance. However, a critical challenge in electrode production ...still lies in the electrode preparation technologies and the restacking of graphene sheets, which can greatly impact the fuel cell performance alongside with catalyst development. This study aimed to investigate the impact of different electrode deposition methods for N-rGO-based catalyst inks on catalyst layer morphology, with a specific focus on graphene sheet orientation and its influence on the performance of alkaline direct ethanol fuel cells (ADEFCs). The dispersion behavior and ink stability of the catalysts were assessed using ultraviolet–visible light (UV-vis), ζ potential, and dynamic light scattering techniques. The morphology and physical properties of the gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) were analyzed through Brunauer–Emmett–Teller measurements, contact angle measurements and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The electrochemical behavior was evaluated both ex-situ, utilizing half-cell GDE measurements, and in situ, through single-cell tests. The N-rGO-based membrane electrode assembly, comprising Pt-free catalysts and a biobased membrane, exhibited outstanding performance in ADEFCs, as evidenced by high maximum power density values and long-term durability. The N-rGO-based membrane electrode assembly has demonstrated remarkable potential for high-performance fuel cells, presenting an exciting avenue for further exploration.
