= 70:30 wt%) eutectic corium, and 50:50 noneutectic corium. All tests were performed in a 1.0-m-deep water pool under atmospheric pressure. The water temperature was maintained at room temperature. The melt mass released to the water pool was ~10 kg for each test. The tests with pure zirconia and 70:30 corium resulted in triggered steam explosions, while the test with 50:50 corium did not. However, a weak trace of a steam spike was detected with 50:50 corium with a fairly long delay time (~0.1 s) after an external triggering. The explosion efficiency was estimated from the dynamic load and dynamic pressure. The explosion efficiency was calculated to be 0.1% for zirconia and 0.04% for 70:30 corium. The explosivity of corium material was found to be rather low, compared to the simulant material (alumina, ~3%).
Summary Thyroid storm is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication of hyperthyroidism. Early recognition and prompt treatment are essential. Atrial fibrillation can occur in up to 40% of ...patients with thyroid storm. Studies have shown that hyperthyroidism increases the risk of thromboembolic events. There is no consensus with regard to the initiation of anticoagulation for atrial fibrillation in severe thyrotoxicosis. Anticoagulation is not routinely initiated if the risk is low on a CHADS2 score; however, this should be considered in patients with thyroid storm or severe thyrotoxicosis with impending storm irrespective of the CHADS2 risk, as it appears to increase the risk of thromboembolic episodes. Herein, we describe a case of thyroid storm complicated by massive pulmonary embolism. Learning points Diagnosis of thyroid storm is based on clinical findings. Early recognition and prompt treatment could lead to a favourable outcome. Hypercoagulable state is a recognised complication of thyrotoxicosis. Atrial fibrillation is strongly associated with hyperthyroidism and thyroid storm. Anticoagulation should be considered for patients with severe thyrotoxicosis and atrial fibrillation irrespective of the CHADS2 score. Patients with severe thyrotoxicosis and clinical evidence of thrombosis should be immediately anticoagulated until hyperthyroidism is under control.
Abstract An 8-month-old girl, born to consanguineous parents, presented with developmental delay, decreased muscle tone, disinterest in her surroundings, and sleepiness. Tests revealed a marked ...excretion of thymine with significantly increased uracil excretion in the urine, indicating a pyrimidine catabolic disorder, i.e., dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase deficiency. Plasma endogenous purines confirmed elevated plasma thymine (21 μmol/L) and uracil (29 μmol/L), also consistent with dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase deficiency. Purine mutation analysis confirmed complete dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase deficiency with a 15 base pair homozygous deletion in exon 16, corresponding to DPYD c.2043-2058del. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging at 14 months indicated severe hypomyelination with gliosis. Her basal ganglia were also involved. At age 15 months, she was hospitalized for aspiration pneumonia and seizures, and also manifested hepatosplenomegaly. White cell enzymes revealed a marked deficiency of β-galactosidase activity (4 μmol/g/hour) in white cells and an elevated chitotriosidase activity (443 μmol/L/hour) in plasma indicating GM1 gangliosidosis. Mutation analysis confirmed c.841C>T (p.His281Tyr) homozygosity for GM1 gangliosidosis. She died at age 19 months.
The study of reliability and understanding of the MgO barrier breakdown mechanism is essential for the development of STT-MRAM, a promising non-volatile memory. However, for STT-MRAM it is unclear ...what the preferred method is for studying barrier breakdown. In this paper we compare four point probe Ramped Voltage Stress (4PP-RVS) with a conventional Constant Voltage Stress (CVS) technique and with pulsed breakdown (RF-BD). We show the equivalence of breakdown time distributions determined by 4PP-RVS and CVS. 4PP makes the investigation of area scaling possible and avoids potential lifetime misjudgments of more than one order of magnitude. In a short and predictable time RVS can measure large populations subject to strong lifetime variability, typical for STT-MRAM cells. We also compare 4PP-RVS with pulsed breakdown (RF-BD) and observe a more favorable reliability for RF-BD. 4PP-RVS allows an efficient in depth breakdown analysis for STT-MRAM.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Tashinone II A-sulfoacid-natrum on the pain threshold and potential molecular mechanism for neuropathic cancer pain. METHODS: ...Forty-five male Balb/c mice were divided into control group model group and experiment group with each 15. The sciatic nerve muscle plexus of experiment and model group were given injection containing S180 sarcoma cell 2 × 10 6 mL for each mouse. Mice in the experiment group were given Tashinone II A-sulfoacid-natrum 25 mg/kg once a day intraperitoneal injection. Moreover, mice in the control group were given physiological saline 25 mg/kg, once a day intraperitoneal injection. The mechanical withdraw threshold and thermal withdraw latency were recorded before S180 sarcoma cell injection and in the time point of day 3, 6, 9, 12, and 14. After 14 days treatment, the mice were treated to death and the sciatic nerve CX3CR1 and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB) mRNA was tested by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: Compared with control group, the mechanical and thermal pain threshold of experiment group was significant decreased (P < 0.05). However, compared with the model group, the mechanical, and thermal pain threshold of experiment group was significant elevated in time point of day 3, 6, 9, 12, 14 for mechanical pain threshold and day 9, 12 14 for thermal pain threshold (P < 0.05); the pain threshold for the experiment and model group was decreased in the first 9 days and then elevated gradually. Compared with control group, the CX3CR1 and NF-kB mRNA relative expression in mice sciatic nerve of experiment group was significant elevated (P < 0.05); but compared with model group, the CX3CR1 and NF-kB mRNA relative expression of experiment group was significant decreased (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Tashinone II A-sulfoacid-natrum can elevates the mechanical and thermal pain threshold through inhibiting the NF-kB in neuropathic cancer pain rat.
Abstract Objective Sufficient and favorable biological functions of islets are major problems hindering xenotransplantation. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects on harvesting, ...purity, viability, and function of using improved Visipaque (iodixanol) and Ficoll-400 for adult porcine islet purification. Methods Twelve adult porcine pancreata were randomly divided into an Iodixanol-University of Wisconsin (UW) group and a Ficoll-400-UW group according to the purification method. Porcine pancreata were isolated by collagenase digestion. After isolation and purification, the islet yield and purity were evaluated by dithizone staining, and islet function assessed by in vitro insulin release assays and in vivo islet xenotransplantation. Results There were no marked differences in the islet yield before purification (5254.67 ± 189.44 IEQ/g vs 5092.67 ± 178.94 IEQ/g, P > .05). After purification, there were significantly more islets harvested in Iodixanol-UW group than in the Ficoll-400-UW group: 4222.00 ± 228.84 IEQ/g vs 3036.83 ± 79.60 IEQ/g ( P < .05). Islets from the two groups showed satisfactory insulin secretory ability. There were no significant differences in islet survival times between the two groups in diabetic rats: 8.2 ± 1.619 days vs 6.9 ± 1.197 days ( P > .05). Conclusion The improved iodixanol-UW density gradient method was superior to Ficoll-400 method to improve the number, viability, and insulin secret of purified adult porcine islets although the benefits did not improve in vivo survival.
In this study, treatment of alizarin violet 3B (AV) dye in water by a artificial solar irradiation assisted Fenton-like process was investigated. Optimized reaction conditions based on response ...surface methodology (RSM) were established under a H2O20/COD ratio of 1.75, a H2O20/Fe3+0 molar ratio of 15 and a reaction time of 15 min in which the COD and TOC degradation efficiency of AV would be more than 90%. As compared to conventional Fenton-like process, the solar Fenton-like process with an irradiation of 500 W/m2 increased the mineralization reaction rate by a factor of 6.9, and the mineralization efficiency was increased from 65% to 92% as the temperature of water was raised from 15 to 35 °C due to solar heat irradiation. Accordingly, solar energy consisting of light energy and heat irradiation showed a hybrid promoting effect on the Fenton-like reaction.
Age-adjusted cancer incidence and age-related penetrance studies have helped guide cancer risk assessment and management. PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome (PHTS) is a term encompassing subsets of ...several clinical syndromes with germline mutations in the PTEN tumor suppressor gene. We conducted the first prospective study to clarify corresponding cancer risks to shed biologic insights on human germline PTEN mutations, and to better inform current surveillance recommendations on the basis of expert opinion.
A series of 3,399 individuals meeting relaxed International Cowden Consortium PHTS criteria were prospectively recruited; 368 individuals were found to have deleterious germline PTEN mutations. Age-adjusted standardized incidence ratio (SIR) calculations and genotype-phenotype analyses were carried out.
Elevated SIRs were found for carcinomas of the breast 25.4, 95% confidence interval (CI), 19.8-32.0, thyroid (51.1, 38.1-67.1), endometrium (42.9, 28.1-62.8), colorectum (10.3, 5.6-17.4), kidney (30.6, 17.8-49.4), and melanoma (8.5, 4.1-15.6). Estimated lifetime risks were, respectively, 85.2% (95% CI, 71.4%-99.1%), 35.2% (19.7%-50.7%), 28.2% (17.1%-39.3%), 9.0% (3.8%-14.1%), 33.6% (10.4%-56.9%), and 6% (1.6%-9.4%). Promoter mutations were associated with breast cancer, whereas colorectal cancer was associated with nonsense mutations.
Lifetime risks for a variety of cancers, now extending to colorectal cancer, kidney cancer, and melanoma, are increased in patients with PTEN mutations. The genotype-phenotype associations here may provide new insights on PTEN structure and function. We propose a comprehensive approach to surveillance of patients with PTEN mutations.
