A patient was 10-year-old girl. Round cell sarcoma, occurring on left maxilla, was treated by X-ray irradiation. After five years, there is not local recurrence and metastatic involvement of any ...other region.
Inorganic constituents of many Cinnamomi Cortices (64 samples; almost all obtained commercially on the Osaka market) were investigated using energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The ...results can be summarized as follows : (1) The Cinnamomi Cortex contains K, Ca, and Fe (except for Japanese cinnamon) at lower levels than those of orchard leaves, while Mn and Sr are present at high levels. (2) A feature of the metals profile of Cinnamomi Cortex is high Mn-content. Especially, Chinese cinnamon (originated from Cinnamomum cassia) contains at extremely high levels, 300-900 ppm, whereas Mn concentrations of Java and Japanese cinnamons range from 100 to 300 ppm, and those of Ceylon cinnamon ranged from 50 to 150 ppm. (3) The contents of Mn and Rb depend on the kind of Cinnamomi Cortex, making identification possible.
A cross-sectional study was conducted to quantitatively evaluate the relationship between the instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) and various physical fitness tests in elderly women living ...at home. The study focused on the total population of those women aged 65 years and over living in Y Town, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, who visited a nursing home for day services. A total of 128 subjects were divided into two groups: dependent in IADL group (n = 49) and independent in IADL group (n = 79). The magnitude of the relation was evaluated by the odds ratio (OR). The following tests showed a significant decrease in IADL: knee-raising test age-adjusted OR = 4.23, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.81-9.87, height (age-adjusted OR = 4.09, 95% CI 1.75-9.56), grip strength (age-adjusted OR = 3.68, 95% CI 1.57-8.60), sit-and-reach test (age-adjusted OR = 2.76, 95% CI 1.20-6.34), and standing on one leg with closed eyes (age-adjusted OR = 2.56, 95% CI 1.09-5.97). Multivariate analysis using Hayashi's quantification method I indicated that knee-raising was the test most highly correlated with decreased IADL. These results suggest that measurement of knee-raising ability, muscle strength of the lower extremities and flexibility of hip joint could be the most useful factors to assess the level of instrumental self-support ability.
Microcrystals of the diluted magnetic semiconductor Cd1-xMnxTe(x=0.13,0.16) were fabricaed by the laser ablation method to investigate the formation process of the microcrystals and their ...magneto-optic effect. Microcrystals 20-40Å in diameter were observed by scanning tunneling microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. In the initial stage of the microcrystals' frowth, they had forms like circular plates. As the Cd1-xMnxTe evaporation increased, they became larger and rounder. X-ray diffraction showed the mixing of zinc-blende and wurtzite structures. The magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of the microcrystals were different from those of Cd1-xMnxTe thick films. The MCD peak, which reflects the band gap, shifted to a higher energy as the diameter of the microcrystal decreased. This energy shift was analyzed by using a quantum confinement model.
The purpose was to investigate the distributions of EE status and subscales in Japanese families of schizophrenic patients and to compare them with results reported from other cultures.
Using a monoclonal antibody (Mab-G3) recognizing glomerular basement membrane (GBM), we assayed GBM antigen (G3-Ag) in the urine and serum of renal disease patients by sandwich ELISA. The subjects ...included normal control (NOR), minimal change nephrotic syndrome (MCNS), IgA nephropathy (IgA), membranous nephropathy (MN), membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) and chronic renal failure (CRF). The urine and serum was used as the material. With urinary G3-Ag, there were no statistically significant differences among the NOR, MCNS, IgA, MN, MPGN and CRF groups. Although no correlation was observed with proteinuria, hematuria, serum creatinine, serum β2 microglobulin and urinary NAG, urinary G3-Ag showed a significant (p<0.05) increase in excretion in the group of progressive CRF patients with s-Cr more than 1.0 mg/dl/month as compared to the stationary CRF group with s-Cr<1.0 mg/dl/month. Serum G3-Ag showed lower values in almost all cases, and there were no significant differences among the renal disease groups. The above findings led us to believe that the assay of urinary G3-Ag was useful in determining the degree of GBM disorder. It was also presumed that assay of renal antigens in urine and serum with the respective anti-human renal monoclonal antibodies could be a new tool in diagnosing renal diseases.
