Considering kebab and hamburger are the most popular RTE meat products in Iran, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of common foodborne pathogens (Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Staphylococcus aureus, and Listeria monocytogenes) in raw kebab and hamburger samples collected from fast-food centers and restaurants. Therefore, total bacterial count (TBC), as well as the prevalence rates and antibiogram patterns of foodborne pathogens in the samples were investigated. The mean value of TBC in raw kebab and hamburger samples was 6.72 ± 0.68 log CFU/g and 6.64 ± 0.66 log CFU/g, respectively. E. coli had the highest prevalence rate among the investigated pathogenic bacteria in kebab (70%) and hamburger samples (48%). Salmonella spp., L. monocytogenes, and S. aureus were also recovered from 58, 50, and 36% of kebab samples, respectively. The contamination of hamburger samples was detected to S. aureus (22%), L. monocytogenes (22%), and Salmonella spp. (10%). In the antimicrobial susceptibility tests, all isolates exhibited high rates of antibiotic resistance, particularly against amoxicillin, penicillin, and cefalexin (79.66-100%). The bla
was the most common resistant gene in the isolates of E. coli (52.54%) and Salmonella spp. (44.11%). Fourteen isolates (23.72%) of E. coli and 10 isolates (29.41%) of Salmonella spp. were positive for bla
. Also, 16 isolates (55.17%) of S. aureus and 10 isolates (27.27%) of L. monocytogenes were positive for mecA gene.
The findings of this study showed that raw kebab and hamburger are potential carriers of antibiotic-resistance pathogenic bacteria, which can be a serious threat to public health.
The effect of foliar application of polyamines on roses (Rosa hybrida cv. 'Herbert Stevens') was investigated in a factorial experiment based on a completely randomized design with three replications ...in a greenhouse. Two factors were applied including polyamine type (putrescine, spermidine, and spermine) and polyamine concentration (0, 1, 2 and 4 mM). The recorded traits included root fresh and dry weight, root length, number of flowers, flower longevity, chlorophyll content, carotenoids, antioxidant enzymes activity (catalase, ascorbate peroxidase and guaiacol peroxidase) and some macronutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The results showed that among polyamines, putrescine had the greatest effect on root dry weight; spermidine showed the greatest effect on root length, chlorophyll content, plant phosphorus and spermine affected root fresh weight and flower longevity most strongly. Polyamine concentration of 1 mM had the strongest effect on flower longevity, carotenoids, nitrogen and phosphorus content. The highest potassium rate was observed in treatments with the concentration of 4 mM. Polyamine treatments had no significant effect on the number of flowers per plant and antioxidant enzymes.

Comparison of the antibacterial properties of milk from different domestic animals.
This study aimed to compare the antimicrobial properties of milk from donkey, horse, goat, sheep, cow and camel. ...The antibacterial properties of samples were analysed against foodborne pathogenic bacteria held at 5, 10 and 20 °C during 96 h of storage. The highest antimicrobial activity was obtained with donkey and horse milk at 20 °C after 96 h. This study has highlighted the variations in the antibacterial properties of the milk from various animal species. The extent of antibacterial activity of milk was shown to depend upon the animal species, the storage temperature and the bacterial strain studied.
The current study was performed to investigate the protective effects of dietary Haematococcus pluvialis (H. pluvialis) on the oxidative stress induced by arsenic in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus ...mykiss). The fish (20.70 ± 0.09 g) were fed with H. pluvialis at the levels of 0.28, 0.56, and 1.12 g 100 g−1 diet for 60 days. Then, each group was divided into two subgroups. In one of the subgroups, fish were exposed to arsenic challenge at a level of 9.1 mg/L. The other subset was used as the negative control. After the 96 h of toxicity test, protein and lipid oxidative levels, antioxidant-relevant gene expression as well as several chemical factors, including pH and peroxide value and moisture content, were evaluated in the fillet samples. Results showed that feeding with H. pluvialis decreased the levels of pH, peroxide value, as well as protein and lipid oxidation levels in treatment groups. Besides, the expression of antioxidant genes was significantly increased in the groups administrated with H. pluvialis. Based on the results of this study, feeding H. pluvialis attenuated the oxidative stress induced by arsenic in rainbow trout fillet through improving the antioxidant defense system.

Considering the importance of vegetables as a source of micronutrients and fibers in a balanced diet, there is still a concern that vegetables could also be a source of toxic heavy metal ...contaminants. The study aimed to determine the concentrations of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) in the salad vegetables sold in Tabriz city, Iran, and to evaluate the probabilistic health risk assessment. The amount of toxic metals in 240 samples was evaluated by atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS) method. The average levels of toxic metals in the samples were found to be 1.59, 1.26, 1.42, 4.89, 13.38, 1.01, and 32.65 mg/kg for Pb, Cd, As, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Zn, respectively. According to the results, Zn and Cu had the highest concentration, whereas the lowest concentration belonged to Ni. The rank order of the toxic elements in the samples based on target hazard quotient (THQ) values was Cr > Cd > As > Pb > Cu> Zn > Ni, for both females and males. Leafy vegetables had a higher amount of total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) than tuber crops for both males and females. The carcinogenic risks of As and Pb were 0.032 and 0.03 in the females and 0.22 and 0.19 in males. According to the finding, there may be a potential risk of toxic metals, especially Cr, Cd, and As, for both females and males in Tabriz through the consumption of vegetables.
In order to study the effect of biochar application as simple and enriched, on the soil nutrients status in the salinity conditions, a research was conducted as a factorial arrangement based on ...completely randomized design (CRD) with three replicates. The biochar (grape pruning residues) was applied in three levels (0, 2% biochar, and 2% enriched biochar by rock phosphate and cow manure). Also, the salinity treatment was considered in three levels (2, 4.5, and 9 dSm

). After treating the soil, it was incubated in polyethylene containers for a 70-day period at 25 °C and 70% field capacity moisture regime. The results showed that salinity significantly affected the soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), calcium, magnesium, sodium, basal respiration, and nitrifying bacteria frequency (
P
< 0.001) and chloride concentration (
P
< 0.01). Also, the biochar significantly affected the pH, organic carbon, concentration of total nitrogen, phosphorous, solution potassium, sodium, iron, zinc, copper, basal respiration, and nitrifying bacteria frequency (
P
< 0.001) of the soil. The interaction effect of biochar and salinity levels was significant on soil sodium concentration (
P
< 0.01) and pH (
P
< 0.05). In comparison with the control treatment, the enriched biochar, decreased soil pH (about 1.4%) and increased the phosphorous, iron, and zinc up to 36%, 29%, and 36%, respectively and simple biochar increased the Nitrogen and Potassium up to 46% and 48%, respectively. In general, it was concluded that both types of the biochars lowered the sodium concentration of the soil in different salinity levels due to high potential of biochar for sodium absorption which this ability may be considered in saline soils remediation.
Despite advances in management, open fractures are at an elevated risk for deep fracture-related infection (FRI). Time to systemic antibiotic (ABX) administration and intraoperative topical ...administration of ABX powder have been used to decrease FRI risk. The purpose of this study was to determine whether topical application of antibiotic powder to type III open lower extremity fractures immediately on presentation to the emergency department (ED) reduces the rate of FRI.
Prospective cohort compared with retrospective historical control.

Application of 1 g of vancomycin and 1.2 g of tobramycin powder directly to open fracture wounds on presentation to the ED.
Patients with type III open lower extremity fractures treated from July 1, 2019, to September 17, 2022, who received topical ABX powder in the ED were compared with patients from a 4-year historical cohort from July 1, 2015, to June 30, 2019, who were treated without topical ABX powder.
Development of a FRI within 6 months of follow-up. Patient demographics, injury characteristics, and postoperative data were analyzed as risk factors for FRI.
Sixty-six patients received topical ABX powder in the ED and were compared with 129 patients who were treated without topical ABX powder. The rate of FRI in the trial group was 6/66 (9.09%) versus 22/129 (17.05%) in the control cohort ( P = 0.133). Multivariate analysis demonstrated higher body mass index as a risk factor for development of FRI ( P = 0.036).
No statistically significant difference in rates of FRI in open lower extremity fractures treated with immediate topical ABX administration in the ED versus standard-of-care treatment without topical ABX was found. These findings may have been limited by insufficient power. Further large-scale study is warranted to determine the significance of topical antibiotic powder application in the ED.

Controversy remains regarding the optimal management of tarsometatarsal (Lisfranc) fracture dislocations. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and ORIF with primary arthrodesis (PA) have been ...described in the treatment of these injuries, although adverse sequelae remain problematic. Previous work has yielded small cohorts with heterogenous results. We aimed to describe the outcomes of Lisfranc fracture dislocations managed with ORIF and/or PA to identify risk factors for complications, such as nonunion and revision surgery.
A retrospective review of 206 consecutive tarsometatarsal fracture dislocations that underwent surgical repair between 2015 and 2021 was performed. Time to radiographic union was noted. Complications were recorded, including revision surgery, infection, symptomatic implant removal, posttraumatic arthritis, secondary arthrodesis, and nonunion. A comparative subgroup analysis of outcomes by treatment modality (ie, PA versus ORIF) and by injury severity (isolated injury versus concomitant lower extremity fracture) were performed. Logistic regression analysis was performed to assess factors associated with revision surgery.
104 patients met the inclusion criteria with a mean 13-month follow-up. Ninety-three (n = 93) patients underwent ORIF, and 11 patients underwent PA. Radiographic union was achieved in 94.2% of cases (98/104) at an average 106 days. Complications included superficial infection (3.8%), deep infection (7.7%), symptomatic implant removal (19.2%), posttraumatic arthritis (12.5%), secondary arthrodesis (4.8%), and nonunion (2.9%). No difference existed in the complication rates between those who underwent ORIF and those who underwent PA ( P = 0.50). Revision surgery rates were similar between patients who sustained isolated injuries and those with concomitant lower extremity fractures ( P = 0.31). Risk factors for revision surgery included open fractures (OR 4.01, P = 0.042) and previous psychiatric illness (OR 5.77, P = 0.016).
The vast spectrum of injury in Lisfranc fracture dislocations makes uniform treatment challenging. In this large consecutive series, few failed to achieve union or required secondary arthrodesis. Open fractures and previous psychiatric illness portended worse clinical outcomes. ORIF without PA remains a viable treatment in these injuries.
