Preparation of monodisperse tungsten oxide particles was investigated. In this study a NaWO4 solution was aged at 40°C for 3 days under a low pH condition with HClO4. The solution generated white ...gel-like precipitates, which changed their color to yellow with aging. The precipitates, probably WO3·H2O, were uniform cubic-like particles, of which the mean edge length and its variation coefficient are 420nm and 15%, respectively.

An algorithm is described that uses fuzzy sets to handle word ambiguity, the main cause of vagueness in the meaning of a word. It is based on conceptual fuzzy sets (CFSs), which represent the meaning ...of words by linking other related words. A trial application of this algorithm to image retrieval showed that it can retrieve images that conceptually fit the meanings of the entered keyword based on the context understood from the characteristics of images. Experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm works well to represent various meanings of a keyword by linking it to other words and to connect words directly to image data. In addition, image retrieval starting with a sample image also worked well. First, a selected sample image was translated into abstract concepts, and images fitting the concepts were chosen.
X-ray optics based on MEMS technologies can provide future astronomical missions with ultra light-weight and high performance optical systems. A silicon optics was fabricated using dry etching and ...annealing technologies. An angular resolution evaluated in the X-ray wavelength range was about 20 arcmin in full width half maximum, corresponding to 3.1 mm. In this paper, to achieve a better angular resolution, the silicon dry etching and annealing processes are conditioned. The surface roughness of sidewalls were measured at a 100 μm scale. After the conditionings, it has been improved by a factor of four.
