The mechanism of nonmagnetic Mott transitions in the Hubbard model on the square lattice is studied, using a variational Monte Carlo method. A simple doublon (D)–holon (H) binding mechanism a previous study proposed J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 75 (2006) 114706 has to be modified, because even a wave function with completely bound D–H pairs brings about a Mott transition at a finite correlation strength. By introducing two characteristic lengths, D–H pair binding length, ξDH, and minimum inter-doublon distance, ξDD, we can properly describe the physics of Mott transitions, and determine the critical point by ξDD∼ξDH. This concept seems universal, because it is valid not only for newly introduced wave functions with long-range D–H and D–D (H–H) correlation factors discussed here, but for a wide range of wave functions with D–H binding factors.
Panic disorder (PD) is a moderately heritable anxiety disorder whose pathogenesis is not well understood. Due to the lack of power in previous association studies, genes that are truly associated ...with PD might not be detected. In this study, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) in two independent data sets using the Affymetrix Mapping 500K Array or Genome-Wide Human SNP Array 6.0. We obtained imputed genotypes for each GWAS and performed a meta-analysis of two GWAS data sets (718 cases and 1717 controls). For follow-up, 12 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were tested in 329 cases and 861 controls. Gene ontology enrichment and candidate gene analyses were conducted using the GWAS or meta-analysis results. We also applied the polygenic score analysis to our two GWAS samples to test the hypothesis of polygenic components contributing to PD. Although genome-wide significant SNPs were not detected in either of the GWAS nor the meta-analysis, suggestive associations were observed in several loci such as BDKRB2 (P=1.3 × 10(-5), odds ratio=1.31). Among previous candidate genes, supportive evidence for association of NPY5R with PD was obtained (gene-wise corrected P=6.4 × 10(-4)). Polygenic scores calculated from weakly associated SNPs (P<0.3 and 0.4) in the discovery sample were significantly associated with PD status in the target sample in both directions (sample I to sample II and vice versa) (P<0.05). Our findings suggest that large sets of common variants of small effects collectively account for risk of PD.

To understand the mechanism of Mott transitions in case of no magnetic influence, superfluid-insulator (Mott) transitions are studied for the S=0 Bose Hubbard model on the square lattice, using a variational Monte Carlo approach. In trial many-body wave functions, we introduce various types of attractive correlation factors between a doubly-occupied site (doublon, D) and an empty site (holon, H), which play a central role for the transition. We propose an improved picture of D–H binding; a Mott transition occurs when the D–H pair length becomes equivalent to the minimum D–D distance, which lengths are appropriately estimated. We confirm this picture is valid for all the wave functions with attractive D–H factors we consider, and point out it can be universal for nonmagnetic Mott transitions.

A micro inspection robot for 1-in pipes has been developed. The robot is 23 mm in diameter and 110 mm in length and is equipped with a high-quality micro charge-coupled device (CCD) camera and a dual ...hand for manipulating small objects in pipes. It can travel through both vertical pipes and curved sections, making possible inspections that would be difficult with conventional endoscopes. Its rate of travel is 6 mm/s and it has a load-pulling power of 1 N. To realize this microrobot, the authors have specially designed and developed several micro devices and micromechanisms: a novel micromechanism called a planetary wheel mechanism for robot drive; a micro electromagnetic motor with a micro planetary reduction gear to drive the planetary wheel mechanism; a micro pneumatic rubber actuator that acts as a hand; a micro CCD camera with high resolution; and a pneumatic wobble motor for rotating the camera and hands. In the paper, the design and performance of these micro devices are reported, the performance of the robot as a whole is described, and an application example is given.
To investigate the dose intensity of induction chemotherapy and oncological outcomes of metastatic testicular cancer under centralized management through a regional medical network.
We ...retrospectively analyzed the outcomes of 86 metastatic testicular cancer patients who were given induction chemotherapy at Tsukuba University Hospital and four branch hospitals between January 2000 and November 2010. Principally, management of patients with poor-prognosis disease and patients having risk factors for bleomycin, etoposide and cisplatin were referred to Tsukuba University Hospital before chemotherapy. For high-risk groups, etoposide and cisplatin or etoposide, ifosfamide and cisplatin was used as an alternative to bleomycin, etoposide and cisplatin.
Overall, 56 and 30 patients were treated at Tsukuba University Hospital and branch hospitals, respectively. Forty-seven, 18 and 21 patients were classified with good-, intermediate- and poor-prognosis disease, respectively, according to the International Germ Cell Cancer Collaborative Group criteria. Eighteen of the 21 patients (86%) with poor-prognosis disease were treated at Tsukuba University Hospital from the beginning of induction chemotherapy. Induction chemotherapy with a high relative dose intensity was possible in most patients. The average relative dose intensity of each drug was >0.96. Treatment procedures other than induction chemotherapy were efficiently centralized; 74% of post-chemotherapy surgery and all second-line or subsequent chemotherapies were performed at Tsukuba University Hospital. The 5-year overall survival rates of the good-, intermediate- and poor-prognosis groups were 97, 93 and 84%, respectively.
Induction chemotherapy with high relative dose intensity, post-chemotherapy surgery and salvage chemotherapy was accomplished efficiently through centralization of management. Oncological outcomes were excellent, especially in patients with poor-prognosis disease, whose 5-year OS reached 84%.
The properties of streamers traveling over the surface of oil-immersed solid dielectrics were experimentally studied under lightning impulse conditions. Streamer polarity and the position of a ...grounded side electrode significantly affected the relationship between the streamer extension length and the applied voltage. Solid surface charging also had a large effect on the streamer propagation. However, the streamer propagation properties showed a consistent dependence on the potential at the solid-liquid interfaces. In addition, the potential drop inside the streamer channel was measured as a function of normalized streamer length. The curve revealed that the potential drop increased drastically within the region of /spl sim/20% from the streamer tip. The streamer appeared to progress with a constant mean velocity.
