We have developed a state-of-the-art apparatus for laser-based spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with micrometer spatial resolution (µ-SARPES). This equipment is realized by the ...combination of a high-resolution photoelectron spectrometer, a 6 eV laser with high photon flux that is focused down to a few micrometers, a high-precision sample stage control system, and a double very-low-energy-electron-diffraction spin detector. The setup achieves an energy resolution of 1.5 (5.5) meV without (with) the spin detection mode, compatible with a spatial resolution better than 10 µm. This enables us to probe both spatially-resolved electronic structures and vector information of spin polarization in three dimensions. The performance of µ-SARPES apparatus is demonstrated by presenting ARPES and SARPES results from topological insulators and Au photolithography patterns on a Si (001) substrate.
We study the manipulation of the spin polarization of photoemitted electrons in Bi2Se3 by spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. General rules are established that enable controlling ...the photoelectron spin-polarization. We demonstrate the ± 100% reversal of a single component of the measured spin-polarization vector upon the rotation of light polarization, as well as full three-dimensional manipulation by varying experimental configuration and photon energy. While a material-specific density-functional theory analysis is needed for the quantitative description, a minimal yet fully generalized two-atomic-layer model qualitatively accounts for the spin response based on the interplay of optical selection rules, photoelectron interference, and topological surface-state complex structure. It follows that photoelectron spin-polarization control is generically achievable in systems with a layer-dependent, entangled spin-orbital texture.
Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is a prototype autoimmune disease mediated by type 1 helper T (TH1) cells and under the control of regulatory cells. Here we report that a synthetic ...glycolipid ligand for CD1d-restricted natural killer T (NKT) cells expressing the semi-invariant T-cell receptor (Valpha14+) is preventive against EAE. The ligand is an analogue of alpha-galactosylceramide (alpha-GC), a prototype NKT cell ligand, with a truncated sphingosine chain. alpha-GC causes NKT cells to produce both interferon (IFN)-gamma and interleukin (IL)-4 (refs 4, 5). However, this new ligand can induce a predominant production of IL-4 by the NKT cells. A single injection of this glycolipid, but not of alpha-GC, consistently induced TH2 bias of autoimmune T cells by causing NKT cells to produce IL-4, leading to suppression of EAE. The lack of polymorphism of CD1d and cross-reactive response of mouse and human NKT cells to the same ligand indicates that targeting NKT cells with this ligand may be an attractive means for intervening in human autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis.
Abstract
When considering public–private partnerships (PPP) for new infrastructure development, it is necessary to structure a project scheme based on the financial analyses from the perspective of ...private businesses, bankability analyses of private finances from the perspective of lenders, and public expenditure analyses from the viewpoint of the public sector after satisfying the criteria of the economic analysis from the viewpoint of the national economy. Although these four analyses are closely related, it is difficult to structure a scheme from a comprehensive viewpoint because they are typically implemented individually. Therefore, this paper proposes an analytical approach that integrates economic, financial, bankability, and public expenditure to conduct a comparative evaluation of various business schemes, including PPP. First, the basic idea of an integrated analysis was explained in detail. After developing each analysis table on a spreadsheet, an integrated analysis table was derived by interconnecting the tables. In addition, using an integrated analysis table prepared for a virtual new toll road project, the usefulness of the integrated analysis approach for structuring the project scheme was confirmed through case studies.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of EGFR mutation status in serum DNA as a means of predicting a benefit from gefitinib (IRESSA) therapy in Japanese patients with non-small cell ...lung cancer (NSCLC). We obtained pairs of tumour and serum samples from 42 patients treated with gefitinib. EGFR mutation status was determined by a direct sequencing method and by Scorpion Amplification Refractory Mutation System (ARMS) technology. EGFR mutations were detected in the tumour samples of eight patients and in the serum samples of seven patients. EGFR mutation status in the tumours and serum samples was consistent in 39 (92.9%) of the 42 pairs. EGFR mutations were strong correlations between both EGFR mutation status in the tumour samples and serum samples and objective response to gefitinib (P<0.001). Median progression-free survival time was significantly longer in the patients with EGFR mutations than in the patients without EGFR mutations (194 vs 55 days, P=0.016, in tumour samples; 174 vs 58 days, P=0.044, in serum samples). The results suggest that it is feasible to use serum DNA to detect EGFR mutation, and that it's potential as a predictor of response to, and survival on gefitinib is worthy of further evaluation.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a fraction of plasma that contains high levels of multiple growth factors. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of PRP on cell proliferation and matrix ...synthesis by porcine chondrocytes cultured in alginate beads, conditions that promote the retention of the chondrocytic phenotype, in order to determine the plausibility of using this plasma-derived material for engineering cartilage.
PRP and platelet-poor plasma (PPP) were prepared from adult porcine blood. Adult porcine chondrocytes were cultured in the presence of 10% PRP, 10% PPP or 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) for 3 days. Cell proliferation, proteoglycan (PG) and collagen synthesis were quantified, and the structure of newly synthesized PG and collagen was characterized.
Treatment with 10% PRP resulted in a small but significant increase in DNA content (+11%, vs FBS;

0.0001). Biochemical analyses revealed that treatment with PRP growth factors did not markedly affect the types of PGs and collagens produced by porcine chondrocytes, suggesting that the cells remained phenotypically stable in the presence of PRP.
PRP isolated from autologous blood may be useful as a source of anabolic growth factors for stimulating chondrocytes to engineer cartilage tissue.
Modification of the gap at the Dirac point (DP) in axion antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 and its electronic and spin structure have been studied by angle- and spin-resolved ...photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) under laser excitation at various temperatures (9–35 K), light polarizations and photon energies. We have distinguished both large (60–70 meV) and reduced (<20meV) gaps at the DP in the ARPES dispersions, which remain open above the Neél temperature (TN=24.5K). We propose that the gap above TN remains open due to a short-range magnetic field generated by chiral spin fluctuations. Spin-resolved ARPES, XMCD and circular dichroism ARPES measurements show a surface ferromagnetic ordering for the “large gap” sample and apparently significantly reduced effective magnetic moment for the “reduced gap” sample. These observations can be explained by a shift of the Dirac cone (DC) state localization towards the second Mn layer due to structural disturbance and surface relaxation effects, where DC state is influenced by compensated opposite magnetic moments. As we have shown by means of ab-initio calculations surface structural modification can result in a significant modulation of the DP gap.
A hexagonal deformation of the Fermi surface of Bi2Se3 has been for the first time observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. This is in contrast to the general belief that Bi2Se3 ...possesses an ideal Dirac cone. The hexagonal shape is found to disappear near the Dirac node, which would protect the surface state electrons from backscattering. It is also demonstrated that the Fermi energy of naturally electron-doped Bi2Se3 can be tuned by 1% Mg doping in order to realize the quantum topological transport.
Abstract
It is reported from the measurement of a negative ion beamlet emittance that the characteristic three-Gaussian components are observed in the emittance diagram. The negative ion trajectories ...are calculated using 3D PIC-MCC simulation in order to clarify the origin of this complicated phase space structure and underlying physical mechanism. The characteristic three-Gaussian components can be reproduced in the emittance diagram from the simulation result. It is verified that the Gaussian components are caused by the negative ions extracted from the different plasma meniscus region, that is, the central region or the region near the edges of the meniscus.
