Decreases in the diversity of enteric bacterial populations are observed in patients with Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Less is known about the virome in these diseases. We show ...that the enteric virome is abnormal in CD and UC patients. In-depth analysis of preparations enriched for free virions in the intestine revealed that CD and UC were associated with a significant expansion of Caudovirales bacteriophages. The viromes of CD and UC patients were disease and cohort specific. Importantly, it did not appear that expansion and diversification of the enteric virome was secondary to changes in bacterial populations. These data support a model in which changes in the virome may contribute to intestinal inflammation and bacterial dysbiosis. We conclude that the virome is a candidate for contributing to, or being a biomarker for, human inflammatory bowel disease and speculate that the enteric virome may play a role in other diseases.

Context. Low-mass dwarf spheroidal galaxies are key objects for our understanding of the chemical evolution of the pristine Universe and the Local Group of galaxies. Abundance ratios in stars of ...these objects can be used to better understand their star formation and chemical evolution. Aims. We report on the analysis of a sample of 11 stars belonging to five different ultra-faint dwarf spheroidal galaxies (UfDSph) that is based on X-Shooter spectra obtained at the VLT. Methods. Medium-resolution spectra have been used to determine the detailed chemical composition of their atmosphere. We performed a standard 1D LTE analysis to compute the abundances. Results. Considering all the stars as representative of the same population of low-mass galaxies, we found that the α/Fe ratios vs.s Fe/H decreases as the metallicity of the star increases in a way similar to that which is found for the population of stars that belong to dwarf spheroidal galaxies. The main difference is that the solar α/Fe is reached at a much lower metallicity for the UfDSph than for the dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We report for the first time the abundance of strontium in CVn II. The star we analyzed in this galaxy has a very high Sr/Fe and a very low upper limit of barium which makes it a star with an exceptionally high Sr/Ba ratio.
After the construction of genomic libraries with yeast artificial chromosomes in the late 1980's for gene isolation and expression studies in cells, human artificial chromosomes were then a natural ...development in the 1990's, based on the same principles of formation requiring centromeric sequences for generating functional artificial chromosomes. Over the past twenty years, they became a useful research tool for understanding human chromosome structure and organization, and important vectors for expression of large genes and gene loci and the regulatory regions for full expression. Now they are being modified and developed for gene therapy both ex vivo and in vivo. The advantages of using HAC vectors are that they remain autonomous and behave as a normal chromosome. They are attractive for therapy studies without the harmful consequences of integration of exogenous DNA into host chromosomes. HAC vectors are also the only autonomous stable vectors that accommodate large sequences (>100 kb) compared to other vectors. The challenges of manipulating these vectors for efficient delivery of genes into human cells is still ongoing, but we have made advances in transfer of gene expressing HAC vectors using the helper free (HF) amplicon vector technology for generating de novo HAC in human cells. Efficient multigene delivery was successfully achieved following simultaneous infection with two HF amplicons in a single treatment and the input DNA recombined to form a de novo HAC. Potentially several amplicons containing gene expressing HAC vectors could be transduced simultaneously which would increase the gene loading capacity of the vectors for delivery and studying full expression in human cells.

-element abundances provides a powerful tool for placing constraints on the chemical evolution and star formation history of galaxies. The majority of studies on the
α
...-element sulfur (S) are focused on local stars, making S behavior in other environments an astronomical topic that is yet to be explored in detail.
Aims.
The investigation of S in the Galactic bulge was recently considered for the first time. This work aims to improve our knowledge on S behavior in this component of the Milky Way.
Methods.
We present the S abundances of 74 dwarf and sub-giant stars in the Galactic bulge, along with 21 and 30 F and G thick- and thin-disk stars, respectively. We performed a local thermodynamic equilibrium analysis and applied corrections for non-LTE on high resolution and high signal-to-noise UVES spectra. S abundances were derived from multiplets 1, 6, and 8 in the metallicity range of − 2 < Fe/H < 0.6, by spectrosynthesis or line equivalent widths.
Results.
We confirm that the behavior of S resembles that of an
α
-element within the Galactic bulge. In the S/Fe versus Fe/H diagram, S presents a plateau at low metallicity, followed by a decreasing of S/Fe with the increasing of Fe/H, before reaching S/Fe ~ 0 at a super-solar metallicity. We found that the Galactic bulge is S-rich with respect to both the thick- and thin-disks at − 1 < Fe/H < 0.3, supporting a scenario of more rapid formation and chemical evolution in the Galactic bulge than in the disk.
We present iron, magnesium, calcium, and titanium abundances for 235 stars in the central region of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (within 9.0′ ≃ 70 pc from the centre) from ...medium-resolution Keck/Deep Imaging Multi-Object Spectrograph spectra. All the considered stars belong to the massive globular cluster M 54 or to the central nucleus of the galaxy (Sgr, N). In particular we provide abundances for 109 stars with Fe/H ≥−1.0, more than doubling the available sample of spectroscopic metallicity and α-elements abundance estimates for Sgr dSph stars in this metallicity regime. We find for the first time a metallicity gradient in the Sgr, N population, whose peak iron abundance goes from Fe/H =−0.38 for R ≤ 2.5′ to Fe/H =−0.57 for 5.0 <R ≤ 9.0′. On the other hand, the trends of Mg/Fe, Ca/Fe, and Ti/Fe with Fe/H are the same over the entire region explored by our study. We reproduce the observed chemical patterns of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal as a whole with a chemical evolution model which implies that a high mass progenitor (MDM = 6 × 1010M⊙) and a significant event of mass-stripping occurred a few Gyr ago, presumably starting at the first peri-Galactic passage after infall.

Context. The mass-metallicity relation (MZR) is a powerful tool to constrain internal physical processes that drive the chemical evolution of galaxies. However, the construction of this relation is ...carried out with field star-forming galaxies in big data surveys where environmental effects are either negligible or not studied in detail. Aims. We study the role of galaxy clusters in the MZR and its evolution at z = 0.317 with star-forming members of AC114 (ABELL S1077). The purpose of this work is to understand how both the environmental effects and dynamical events modify the chemical evolution in this galaxy cluster. Methods. Spectroscopic VIMOS/VLT data was used to select cluster members and classify the galaxy sample in star-forming and passive galaxies. Gas-phase metallicities were estimated by using the strong-line method O3N2 calibrated on Te-based oxygen abundances. Available optical and near-infrared photometry from DECaLS DR10 and the VIKING DR4 ESO survey was used to derive the stellar mass of the galaxy sample. Results. AC114 is dominated by passive galaxies located in the central region of the cluster, whereas the star-forming members tend to be located outside this region. The constructed MZR from the latter indicates that star-forming galaxies have a lower metal content than foreground galaxies (spanning redshifts up to z = 0.28), and the same or even lower metallicities with respect to background galaxies (spanning redshifts 0.34–0.70). Additionally, it shows a higher scatter of σ = 0.17 dex, consistent with MZRs of galaxy clusters reported in the literature. The MZR at z = 0.317 is downshifted by 0.19 dex on average with respect to local galaxies. Comparing the AC114-MZR with the field MZR at the same redshift, two galaxies are found to be more metal-rich than the field ones by ∼0.10 dex. Likely as a result of ram-pressure stripping, star-forming galaxies deviate more from the MZR than field galaxies at the same redshift. Star-forming galaxies in the cluster are in general metal-poorer than field galaxies at the same redshfit up to ∼0.22 dex, and show a MZR that is slightly shallower in slope compared with that of field galaxies. With a redshift analysis, three substructures were identified: star-forming galaxies in the main component show a higher scatter of 0.20 dex in metallicity than both the front and back ones, with a scatter of 0.07 and 0.11 dex, respectively. Star-forming galaxies located outside the central region of AC114 are driving the shallower slope of the cluster MZR. Conclusions. The slightly shallower slope and high scatter of AC114 with respect to foreground and background galaxies in the mass-metallicity plane indicates that galaxies are suffering from environmental and dynamical effects. Ram-pressure stripping and strangulation are likely the main drivers in increasing the metallicities of at least two star-forming members with respect to the field MZR at the same redshift. However, the lower metallicities of the star-forming members, which drive the flatter slope of the AC114-MZR, can be explained by strong metal-poor inflows triggered by galaxy-galaxy interactions. In fact, the downshift reported for these galaxies is consistent with other observations and simulations, as a result of mergers and/or flybys, which dilute the gas-phase metallicities from metal-poor inflows. The mass of a galaxy cluster appears to be a key variable in determining the importance of environmental effects in the evolution of cluster members, where massive galaxy clusters (Mvir > 1015 M⊙) show changes in the slope of the MZR.
Context. Stellar radial velocities play a fundamental role in the discovery of extrasolar planets and the measurement of their physical parameters as well as in the study of stellar physical ...properties. Aims. We investigate the impact of the solar activity on the radial velocity of the Sun using the HARPS spectrograph to obtain measurements that can be directly compared with those acquired in the extrasolar planet search programmes. Methods. We used the Moon, the Galilean satellites, and several asteroids as reflectors to measure the radial velocity of the Sun as a star and correlated this velocity with disc-integrated chromospheric and magnetic indexes of solar activity that are similar to stellar activity indexes. We discuss in detail the systematic effects that affect our measurements and the methods to account for them. Results. We find that the radial velocity of the Sun as a star is positively correlated with the level of its chromospheric activity at ~95 percent significance level. The amplitude of the long-term variation measured in the 2006−2014 period is 4.98 ± 1.44 m/s, which is in good agreement with model predictions. The standard deviation of the residuals obtained by subtracting a linear best fit is 2.82 m/s and is due to the rotation of the reflecting bodies and the intrinsic variability of the Sun on timescales shorter than the activity cycle. A correlation with a lower significance is detected between the radial velocity and the mean absolute value of the line-of-sight photospheric magnetic field flux density. Conclusions. Our results confirm similar correlations found in other late-type main-sequence stars and provide support to the predictions of radial velocity variations induced by stellar activity based on current models.
Recently, an increasing number of studies were devoted to measure the abundances of neutron-capture elements heavier than iron in stars belonging to Galactic Open Clusters (OCs). OCs span a sizeable ...range in metallicity (-0.6 less than or equal to Fe/H less than or equal to +0.4), and they show abundances of light elements similar to disc stars of the same age. A different pattern is observed for heavy elements. A large scatter is observed for Ba, with most OCs showing Ba/Fe and Ba/La overabundant with respect to the Sun. The origin of this overabundance is not clearly understood. With the goal of providing new observational insights, we determined radial velocities, atmospheric parameters and chemical composition of 27 giant stars members of five OCs: Cr 110, Cr 261, NGC 2477, NGC 2506 and NGC 5822. We used high-resolution spectra obtained with the UVES spectrograph at European Southern Observatory Paranal. We perform a detailed spectroscopic analysis of these stars to measure the abundance of up to 22 elements per star. We study the dependence of element abundance on metallicity and age with unprecedented detail, complementing our analysis with data culled from the literature. We confirm the trend of Ba overabundance in OCs, and show its large dispersion for clusters younger than similar to 4 Gyr. Finally, the implications of our results for stellar nucleosynthesis are discussed. We show in this work that the Ba enrichment compared to other neutron-capture elements in OCs cannot be explained by the contributions from the slow neutron-capture process and the rapid neutron-capture process. Instead, we argue that this anomalous signature can be explained by assuming an additional contribution by the intermediate neutron-capture process.

We describe the atomic and molecular data that were used for the abundance analyses of FGK-type stars carried out within the
Gaia
-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey in the years 2012 to 2019. ...The
Gaia
-ESO Survey is one among several current and future stellar spectroscopic surveys producing abundances for Milky-Way stars on an industrial scale.
Aims.
We present an unprecedented effort to create a homogeneous common line list, which was used by several abundance analysis groups using different radiative transfer codes to calculate synthetic spectra and equivalent widths. The atomic data are accompanied by quality indicators and detailed references to the sources. The atomic and molecular data are made publicly available at the CDS.
Methods.
In general, experimental transition probabilities were preferred but theoretical values were also used. Astrophysical
gf
-values were avoided due to the model-dependence of such a procedure. For elements whose lines are significantly affected by a hyperfine structure or isotopic splitting, a concerted effort has been made to collate the necessary data for the individual line components. Synthetic stellar spectra calculated for the Sun and Arcturus were used to assess the blending properties of the lines. We also performed adetailed investigation of available data for line broadening due to collisions with neutral hydrogen atoms.
Results.
Among a subset of over 1300 lines of 35 elements in the wavelength ranges from 475 to 685 nm and from 850 to 895 nm, we identified about 200 lines of 24 species which have accurate
gf
-values and are free of blends in the spectra of the Sun and Arcturus. For the broadening due to collisions with neutral hydrogen, we recommend data based on Anstee-Barklem-O’Mara theory, where possible. We recommend avoiding lines of neutral species for which these are not available. Theoretical broadening data by R.L. Kurucz should be used for Sc
II
, Ti
II
, and Y
II
lines; additionally, for ionised rare-earth species, the Unsöld approximation with an enhancement factor of 1.5 for the line width can be used.
Conclusions.
The line list has proven to be a useful tool for abundance determinations based on the spectra obtained within the
Gaia
-ESO Survey, as well as other spectroscopic projects. Accuracies below 0.2 dex are regularly achieved, where part of the uncertainties are due to differences in the employed analysis methods. Desirable improvements in atomic data were identified for a number of species, most importantly Al

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is associated with increased intestinal translocation of microbial products and enteropathy as well as alterations in gut bacterial communities. However, ...whether the enteric virome contributes to this infection and resulting immunodeficiency remains unknown. We characterized the enteric virome and bacterial microbiome in a cohort of Ugandan patients, including HIV-uninfected or HIV-infected subjects and those either treated with anti-retroviral therapy (ART) or untreated. Low peripheral CD4 T cell counts were associated with an expansion of enteric adenovirus sequences and this increase was independent of ART treatment. Additionally, the enteric bacterial microbiome of patients with lower CD4 T counts exhibited reduced phylogenetic diversity and richness with specific bacteria showing differential abundance, including increases in Enterobacteriaceae, which have been associated with inflammation. Thus, immunodeficiency in progressive HIV infection is associated with alterations in the enteric virome and bacterial microbiome, which may contribute to AIDS-associated enteropathy and disease progression.
