We report three cases of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with a near-tetraploid karyotype in most metaphases while lacking chromosomal abnormalities typical for AML. All patients, 63, 72 and 81 years ...old, were female. In two cases, AML was diagnosed 5–7 months after a cytopenic period while the third patient had a secondary AML after therapy for a pleural tumor. Leukemic blasts were classified as AML M0, AML M1 and AML without further specification. Two patients died on the 18th and 52nd day after the start of cytotoxic chemotherapy, the third patient refused chemotherapy and died 22 days after the diagnosis. The three patients may represent a distinct AML category with the following features: (1) the near-tetraploid karyotype in most bone marrow metaphases examined at diagnosis of AML; (2) the presence of very large myeloid blasts in the bone marrow and dysplastic changes in erythroid and/or megakaryocytic lineages pointing to the origin of AML in pluripotent myeloid progenitor cells; (3) the expression of the CD34 antigen; (4) the low growth of granulocyte-macrophage colony forming cells in culture; and (5) the presence of a preleukemic phase, a higher age and a poor prognosis.

In the experiment, 367 hybrid meat pigs were tested. Transport of all observed pigs took 1 hour to get to a slaughterhouse. The housing period of the observed groups in the slaughterhouse took 1, 2, ...4, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, and 41 hours. The pH value was measured in the Musculus longissimus dorsi (MLD) as well as in Musculus semimembranosus in the thigh meat (MSM) 45 minutes after slaughter. The highest average pH MLD value (6.36) was recorded in the group of pigs that were housed in the slaughterhouse for the shortest period of time. The average pH MLD value in pigs with the shortest period of housing was statistically arguably higher (P is less than 0.01) in comparison with the groups that were housed in the slaughterhouse from 4 – 17 hours. The group of pigs with the shortest housing period of time had also achieved the highest average value (6.45 +/- 0.27) of the pH MSM indicator. Compared to that group, a provably lower average of pH MSM values were recorded in groups with the length of housing 13, 14, and 17 hours (P is less than 0.01). It has resulted from the experiment that after a short - lasting transport it is desirable, in terms of pork quality, to slaughter the animals as soon as possible after their arrival to the slaughterhouse. An animal that is slaughtered after a 12- hour housing might mean a threat for the increased occurence of the PSE meat due to the consequence of stress caused during the stay in the slaughterhouse.
A new method for the determination of pyrroloquinoline quinone by capillary zone electrophoresis has been developed. Separation conditions have been optimised with the respect to different parameters ...including pH and ionic strength of the background electrolyte, separation voltage and temperature of the capillary. A buffer consisting of 50 m
M β-alanine–HCl pH 3.0 was found to be the most suitable electrolyte for this separation. An applied voltage of 25 kV (negative polarity) and a temperature of 25°C gave the best analysis of pyrroloquinoline quinone. The linear detection range for concentration versus peak area for the assay is from 5 to 500 μ
M (correlation coefficient 0.9998) with a detection limit of 0.1–0.2 μ
M. The inter-day reproducibility of the peak area was 2.5% and the inter-day reproducibility of the migration time was below 0.18%.
Differences between two subspecies of Bolboschoenus maritimus (L.) Palla (= Scirpus maritimus L.) in different habitats (littoral and terrestrial) are partly due to variations in the buoyancy of ...their achenes, caused by different anatomical structure of the fruits. This hypothesis was tested by comparing fruit buoyancy and anatomy of both subspecies at several localities. Plants were sampled from Bolboschoenus maritimus subsp. maritimus (plants with branched inflorescences and triangular fruits, 4 localities) and B. maritimus subsp. compactus (Hoffm.) Hejný (plants with compact inflorescences and prevailing concave fruits, 4 localities) in the Czech and Slovak Republics, and B. maritimus subsp. compactus (plants with compact inflorescences and convex fruits, 1 locality) from the coast of South Sweden. From each locality a plant with several tubers connected by rhizomes was taken and transferred into the experimental garden; from these cultivated plants (clones) mixed samples of fruits collected from each clone were used for buoyancy tests and a study of their anatomy. Fruit buoyancy was found to depend on the anatomical structure of the pericarp - the presence of aeriferous tissue in the exocarp serves as the main floating organ. This differentiated all plants studied into two groups: short-floating subsp. maritimus, with a thin or none aeriferous tissue in the exocarp, and long-floating subsp. campactus with well developed aeriferous tissue. Differences in fruit buoyancy corresponds to differences in the prevailing habitat types of both subspecies studied in the inland sites: the frequent occurrence of subsp. campactus in temporarily flooded terrestrial habitats contrasts with the prevalence of subsp. maritimus in the littoral of water bodies. This is an example of intra-specific ecological differentiation leading to differentiation in wetland communities.
Near infrared (NIR) reflectance spectroscopy was applied to the calibration procedure for the determination of sucrose content in slices, pulps and raw and white sugars. Calibration correlation ...between NIR and referent HPLC results gave correlation coefficient higher than 0.999 for slices, pulps and raw sugar. The relative standard error of calibration varied from 0.02 % (raw sugar) to 0.88 % (slices). In the case of white sugar the validity of calibration was not evaluated.
The paper presents a survey of the incidence of notified malignant intraocular tumors, code 190 of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9). It analyzes the incidence, aspecific incidence ...and mortality rate also according to the 4th subclass of code 190 (ICD-9), covering the territory of the Slovak Republic in the period from 1968-1985. The incidence of intraocular tumors over the period studied was found to be 8.2/100,000 inhabitants. The recorded data correspond to values given for other regions.
