Hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) has remarkable radiation resistance properties and can be deposited on a lot of different substrates. A-Si:H based particle detectors have been built since mid ...1980s as planar p-i-n or Schottky diode structures; the thickness of these detectors ranged from 1 to 50 micron. However MIP detection using planar structures has always been problematic due to the poor S/N ratio related to the high leakage current at high depletion voltage and the low charge collection efficiency. The usage of 3D detector architecture can be beneficial for the possibility to reduce inter-electrode distance and increase the thickness of the detector for larger charge generation compared to planar structures. Such a detector can be used for future hadron colliders for its radiation resistance and also for X-ray imaging. Furthermore the possibility of a-Si:H deposition on flexible materials (like kapton) can be exploited to build flexible and thin beam flux measurement detectors and x-ray dosimeters.
Acute hospitalisation may be required to support patients with Neuromuscular disorders (NMDs) mainly experiencing respiratory complications, swallowing difficulties, heart failure, urgent surgical ...procedures. As NMDs may need specific treatments, they should be ideally managed in specialized hospitals. Nevertheless, if urgent treatment is required, patients with NMD should be managed at the closest hospital site, which may not be a specialized centre where local emergency physicians have the adequate experience to manage these patients. Although NMDs are a group of conditions that can differ in terms of disease onset, progression, severity and involvement of other systems, many recommendations are transversal and apply to the most frequent NMDs. Emergency Cards (EC), which report the most common recommendations on respiratory and cardiac issues and provide indications for drugs/treatments to be used with caution, are actively used in some countries by patients with NMDs. In Italy, there is no consensus on the use of any EC, and a minority of patients adopt it regularly in case of emergency. In April 2022, 50 participants from different centres in Italy met in Milan, Italy, to agree on a minimum set of recommendations for urgent care management which can be extended to the vast majority of NMDs. The aim of the workshop was to agree on the most relevant information and recommendations regarding the main topics related to emergency care of patients with NMD in order to produce specific ECs for the 13 most frequent NMDs.
We have demonstrated that Rhizobium leguminosarum strain LPR1105 contains a heat stable and a heat labile glutamine synthetase (EC 6.3.1.2) activity similar to those described for other Rhizobiaceae. ...Most of the activity is heat stable when this strain is grown on glutamine as sole nitrogen source, but most is heat labile when grown on nitrate. Using a gene bank of R. leguminosarum DNA we have isolated two clones, which code for heat stable (p7D9) and heat labile (p4F7) glutamine synthetase activity, by complementing the glutamine auxotrophy of Klebsiella pneumoniae glnA mutants. Cross-hybridization of p7D9 with a fragment of the glnA gene of K. pneumoniae was observed, but no cross-hybridization between p7D9 and p4F7 was found. Since these two regions hybridize to genomic DNA of R. leguminosarum they are probably the structural genes for GSI and GSII, and the availability of these genes will make it possible to test this hypothesis. Clone p4F7 complements an ntrC+ but not an ntrC K. pneumoniae glnA mutant, suggesting that the ntrC gene is required for the complementation of the glutamine auxotrophy by this plasmid.
The deposition of epitaxial thin solid films of Si from chlorosilanes was investigated using a multiscale approach. Gas phase and surface kinetic schemes were developed using kinetic constants that, ...when not found in the literature, were calculated using density functional and transition state theory. Temperature fields, velocity profiles and mass transport rates inside the deposition reactor were calculated solving mass, momentum and energy conservation equations in two dimensions. Finally, the morphology evolution of the film was investigated with three-dimensional Kinetic Monte Carlo. Diffusion parameters of adsorbed Cl atoms were calculated with density functional theory representing the surface as clusters. The results of the simulations show that the surface chemistry might be more complicated than expected. The calculated presence of a significant concentration of islands and rough terrace steps is in fact likely to influence the HCl desorption kinetics, which appears now to be not consistent with experimental data.
A cytoskeletal apparatus is involved in the movement of vesicles, organelles, and gametes in the pollen tube. The function of microfilaments has been defined quite precisely, but the role of ...microtubules needs to be further clarified. On the basis of immunological and biochemical investigations, we have identified a polypeptide showing common properties with kinesin, a microtubule-based motor mainly described in nonplant tissues, in the pollen tube of Nicotiana tabacum. Like mammalian kinesin, the kinesin-immunoreactive homolog from Nicotiana tabacum pollen tubes binds to mammalian microtubules in an AMP-PNP dependent manner. The kinesin-like component is likely to be involved in the movement of vesicular material in the growing pollen tube.
