Current mobility strategies tend to pursue sustainable solutions with low environmental and economic impact, such as the disincentive to the use of private vehicles. Mobility on foot is among the ...most advantageous forms for short distances, especially if different technological and infrastructural solutions are inserted in the urban context such as underpasses that limit the likely conflicts with motor vehicles. These solutions, however, are not easily perceived as positive because people often do not like to change their usual routes or because they feel psychological discomfort when they pass through closed places. This research work focuses on the evaluation of the benefits of including a small underpass in the city of Rijeka, Croatia and through an Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), a multi-criteria analysis, it was possible to prioritize a number of decision-making alternatives, related to qualitative and quantitative evaluations, otherwise not directly comparable, and combining multidimensional measurement scales into a single priority scale. This analysis allows to provide cues for local and non-local urban planning, encouraging through the participatory form an active comparison between the population and local authorities and at the same time allows to assess which multidisciplinary processes (psychological/engineering) are possible to put in place to encourage the research on pedestrian behavior.
Participation in social and cultural life is the right of every human being, but for some persons (with disability, chronic illness, mobility and sensory issues…) it is greatly hindered by the ...inaccessibility of spaces and content. This topic has recently gained importance, owing to our growing awareness of the percentage of persons with mobility problems, and particularly regarding the aging population in many countries. Moreover, for several countries, the issue of accessibility is also related to the growing importance of tourism to their economy or the presence of many persons with disabilities related to wars. This paper presents the research on the evaluation of the accessibility of cultural locations (urban sites, museums, parks, theatres, etc.) through in-depth interviews and surveys with representatives of persons with disabilities, chronic illness, mobility and sensory issue and mental health issues, and by creating an evaluation multicriteria model with guidelines based on these inputs. The results reveal that while it is possible to evaluate the flow and content of cultural activities, there are problems of inaccessibility and lack of awareness among the general and professional public.
Since complex urban systems are a combination of different spatial typologies and may have various complex characteristics (human, environmental, social, economic, political, and cultural), ...decision-making cannot be done without a holistic approach and complex analysis and evaluation of the possible development scenarios. This is especially true in today’s world, where spatial and urban planning must consider various objectives such as sustainable development, accessibility, landscape characteristics, and public interests on a strategic level. This results in the need to use appropriate decision support and decision-making tools in the strategic urban planning process of complex urban environments with Historic Urban Landscapes (HUL) characteristics to improve urban development and resilience. The proposed evaluation model, “Strategic Planning for Urban Resilience—SPUR model,” is based on a holistic approach to spatial planning with an emphasis on the strategic sustainable development of urban voids as HULs and was tested on the case study of the Delta area in the City of Rijeka, Croatia. The proposed holistic approach can help in scenario building, evaluation, and selection of planning alternatives, as well as decision-making processes in urban management, by enabling the evaluation and control of complex scenarios from a sustainable development perspective.
The aim of this paper is to provide an analysis of the reconstruction of Hotel President in Dubrovnik in 2013. The paper is based on student Dean Sošić's Master's thesis titled "Reconstruction of ...Hotel President in Dubrovnik in 2013," successfully defended at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Rijeka, in 2020. The student analyzes Edward Stone Durell's original design from the 1970s and subsequent works on the hotel until 2013 when it was thoroughly reconstructed for the new investor. In addition to a construction analysis, this paper also brings an evaluation of the reconstructed hotel.
Mediterranean towns and their surroundings show specific characteristics, such as urban structure, presence of complex stratification of heritage, and often seasonality, which makes the choice of ...spatial organization and construction technology for building construction of high importance in relation to sustainable development. For such purpose, the SOnCT model, based on multi-criteria decision analysis, has been developed which takes into account optimal building interventions in Mediterranean towns from a sustainable development perspective, highlighting their spatial-technical aspects. The presented research answers the questions of how sustainable development goals can be implemented in the case of construction interventions in Mediterranean areas, especially in smaller settlements that present very fragile status and specific characteristics not comparable to northern towns. This paper presents the construction and verification of the evaluation and prioritization model for selecting the optimal spatial organization and construction technology based on the criteria of sustainability, spatial characteristics, and the United Nations’ Sustainable development goals.
Trsat castle is one of the most famous heritage elements in Primorsko-goranska County. In 2015, as part of the renewal design, the City of Rijeka has commissioned the survey of the complex (almost 8000m²). The survey was done using the laboratory equipment of University of Rijeka. The aim of the paper is to illustrate the survey process, to analyze the possibility of combining laser scanning with other contemporary methods (drone survey, photo-modelling...), as well as to compare the results of the survey with the previous surveys of the complex, and to determine new data about the complex and discuss the results, especially the importance of such a complex survey for cultural heritage preservation.
U radu je dan povijesni pregled razvoja turizma u
Rovinju te je razvoj zone Monte Mulini analiziran kao posebno zanimljiv s
aspekta novije hotelske izgradnje u Hrvatskoj. Na relativno malom području ...uz
rub parka šume Zlatni Rt u posljednjih desetak godina sagrađena su čak tri
visoko kategorizirana hotela na mjestu postojećih te je renoviran hotel Eden
arhitekata Bartolića i Begovića. U radu se analiziraju osnovne karakteristike
nove gradnje i rekonstrukcije hotela Eden te urbanističke i arhitektonske
karakteristike ove zone.
The paper presents an overview of the historic development of tourism in Rovinj, Croatia. The development of Monte Mulini area is analysed as particularly interesting from the aspect of recent hotel construction in Croatia. On the relatively small area near the edge of forest park Zlatni Rt, in last ten years three highly categorised hotels were built on the area of existing hotel buildings, and the hotel Eden, designed by architects Bartolić and Begović, has been reconstructed. Urban and architectural characteristics of the area are analysed, as well as new construction and reconstruction characteristics of existing hotels.

Since the 19th century is the century of the development of structures, the 20th century is the century of the development of new construction and finishing works materials. Thus, the development and use of the structures introduced in the 19th and 20th centuries is also followed by the development of the façade systems. The paper analyzes the development of the case studies in Rijeka and its surrounding area.
