By using anti‐ras p21 mouse monoclonal antibody rp35, the authors studied the reactivity of 170 squamous cell carcinomas of the uterine cervix of different histologic types. The overexpression of p21 ...was noted in 57.1% of keratinizing type (K type) and 54.2% of large cell nonkeratinizing type (LNK type), but only 38.7% of small cell type (S type). Upon statistical analysis of the correlations between p21 overexpression and patient prognosis with the Kaplan‐Meier method and generalized Wilcoxon text, the p21‐positive K and LNK types showed poorer prognosis, whereas the positive S type showed better prognosis in comparison with the negative cases. These findings suggest that the expression of ras p21 is one of the parameters related with prognosis of cervical cancers, but the mode of the correlation is dependent on their histologic types.
Molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) power generation systems will provide a number of merits such as high efficiency, various fuel choices (coal, LNG, methanol), fast load response, and clean exhaust ...gas to the electric utilities. In order to realize such attractive power sources, it is important to develop not only high-performance large cells and stacks but also suitable system control technologies. The Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry has recently constructed a 10-kW-class MCFC power generation system test facility and started a series of stack and system tests. CRIEPI has classified those thermal characteristics and gas recycling performance. One of those test results show a 53% energy conversion efficiency with anode gas recycling only.
In order to establish the operation technologies of the molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) power plant, it is necessary to understand the dynamic performance of the stack itself, which is the most ...important machine in the plant. The authors developed the dynamic performance model of the largescale MCFC, which has the distributions of temperature, current density, and so on. The simulation results agree well with experimental results of a 10-kW-class stack qualitatively. Using this model, the response to the load current was analyzed for three types of MCFC adopting its own gas flow system such as cross-flow, co-flow and counter-flow. The simulation results showed similar voltage response in three types of MCFC. The response of temperature and current density, however, varied extensively
The authors describe a molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) test facility that has been installed at CRIEPI, and discuss the results of preliminary tests. The purpose of the installation is to clarify ...large stack performance, evaluate large stack durability, and develop the operating technology of the MCFC which is installed within the system. The facility is divided into two sections, single loop and recycle loop. Before power generation tests using MCFC stacks, the performance of the facility is checked to ensure that the two loops have the desired performance. The preliminary tests demonstrated the basic function and features of the loops and provided data regarding their operation.< >
To evaluate the usefulness of diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) for the early diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD).
Thirty-six consecutive patients (age 56 to 82 years) were enrolled, and 26 were ...examined by DWI. Nine were definite based on the World Health Organization criteria, and 27 were probable. The percentages of DWI abnormalities, periodic sharp wave complexes (PSWCs) on the EEG, detection of CSF 14-3-3 protein, and increase of CSF neuron-specific enolase (>25 ng/mL) on the first examination were compared. For DWI, 32 patients (age 31 to 84 years) who showed progressive dementia or impaired consciousness served as disease controls.
The percentage of DWI abnormalities was 92.3%, of PSWCs 50.0%, of 14-3-3 protein detection 84.0%, and of NSE increase 73.3%. Two of the 32 control subjects were falsely positive on DWI. The sensitivity of DWI was 92.3% (95% CI 74.8 to 99.5%) and specificity 93.8% (95% CI 79.2 to 99.2%). In 17 patients who did not show PSWCs on the first EEG, abnormal DWI findings were still clearly detected. Four patients who were negative for 14-3-3 protein also showed DWI abnormalities. DWI abnormalities were detected as early as at 3 weeks of symptom duration in four patients in whom PSWCs were not yet evident.
DWI can detect characteristic lesions in the majority of patients with CJD regardless of the presence of PSWCs. DWI was the most sensitive test for the early clinical diagnosis of CJD; consideration should be given to its inclusion in the clinical diagnostic criteria of CJD.
