As society continues to progress, it is becoming increasingly more important to mathematically deal with issues, take risks and uncertainty into account, clarify the grounds for participating in ...judgements or decision making, and make critical deliberations. This competence is defined as "decision making”. We present the design of a task about saving more lives with automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) in order to foster this competency in mathematics lessons. In methodological terms, we use Lesson Study tocarefully anticipate the process of students’ finding and solving problems. We review the design from different viewpoints, such as “What times and how should all the students in the class study?” or “When and what kind of materials should be presented?”

The complexation of two palladium(II) cations led to the formation of ...π‐radical species that were persistent in atmospheric air in the presence of moisture. Effective delocalization of an unpaired electron over the hexaphyrin backbone could contribute to the distinct chemical stability.

A novel helically twisted π‐extended corrorin derivative having two boron dipyrrin (BODIPY) moieties at the periphery, a BODIPY DYEmer (6‐BF2) cross‐bridged with π‐conjugated dipyrrinylidene unit, ...was synthesized and characterized. The neutral 6‐BF2 is nonfluorescent due to the internal photoinduced charge transfer (CT) character in the excited state as inferred from the femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. However, upon protonation, the CT process is suppressed and the species H6‐BF2+ becomes near infrared (IR) emissive. With the aid of rigid helical conformations in 6‐BF2, the helical isomers (P‐ and M‐forms) were resolved and their chiroptical property was investigated. The distinct circular dichroism (CD) spectral changes of the enantiomers were observed in the presence of acids, which demonstrates that 6‐BF2 can be utilized for potential acid‐responsive chiroptical materials.
A switchable chiral dye: A novel helically twisted BODIPY DYEmer (6‐BF2) cross‐bridged with π‐conjugated pyrrolyl methylidene dipyrrin unit, a π‐extended corrorin derivative bearing two BODIPY moieties at the periphery, was synthesized and characterized. The neutral 6‐BF2 is nonfluorescent, however switched to NIR emissive species upon protonation. The acid‐responsive chiroptical property was also investigated.
A contracted doubly N‐confused dioxohexaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.0) complex consisting of two paramagnetic copper metals and open‐shell π‐radical ligand was synthesized as a new multi‐heterospin motif. X‐ray ...spectroscopy supported the divalent character of the inner copper centers, and electron paramagnetic resonance and magnetometric studies suggested the presence of unpaired d electrons strongly antiferromagnetically coupled with π‐radicals delocalized on the macrocycle. The 25 π non‐innocent dioxohexaphyrin ligand allowed the facile interconversion between antiaromatic 24 π and aromatic 26 π species, respectively, upon redox reactions.
Doubly confused: A novel bis‐copper/π‐radical hybrid‐spin complex was synthesized with a non‐innocent doubly N‐confused dioxo‐norhexaphyrin. Unpaired copper d‐electrons are antiferromagnetically coupled with π‐radical delocalized on the macrocycle. The formal 25π radical norhexaphyrin enables to convert to 24π antiaromatic and 26π aromatic species, respectively, upon mild redox reactions (see scheme).
This study aims to illustrate the effectiveness of model-making and simulations for solving social problems in high school information study classes. The instructional material seeks to foster ...scientific decision-making capability through modeling by simulation of random events. The methods of the instructional design are as follows: First, we divided the scientific decision-making capability into five capability components: “modeling”, “representation”, “method”, “interpretation, evaluation, and improvement”, and “communication”. Second, we developed an instructional procedure which consists of three steps, “Modeling aimed to solve unstructured problems”, “Implementing the simulations by random events”, and “Decision-making by using a result of the simulation”. Third, we designed a lesson plan including formative assessment and team cooperative problem solving through interaction, and put it into practice. As a result of analyzing the performance of students from different aspects using their practical records, within “modeling”, “representation”, and “method”, we found that some students begun to think from diverse points of view and continued onto the phase of sociality. The result of this study illustrates that interaction and formative assessment are effective means that shift decision-making capability to the phase of sociality, revealing that model-designing and simulation activities with interactions aimed to solve unstructured problems help foster the students’ scientific decision-making capability, thus proposing the implementation of these activities in schools.
