The acyclic ligands with an adjacent bistetrahydrofuran (THF) skeleton have been synthesized as analogs of bullatacin, a representative natural product in a family of
Annonaceous acetogenins, and ...their binding properties toward metal cations have been investigated. The dihydroxyl bis-THF ligands with alkyl chains showed specific binding toward Ca
2+, and those with acetamido groups exhibited potent binding with Ca
2+ and Mg
2+. The ligand with ether chains showed higher affinity toward Mg
2+. These binding properties which depend on the nature of side chains and their stereochemistry have been analyzed by molecular modeling.
The bis-THF ligands as analogs of bullatacin or asimicin have been shown to bind Ca
2+ or Mg
2+ selectively. These complexes were analyzed by molecular modeling.
This report describes a congenital fibrosarcoma (CFS) of the ovary presenting as an abdominal mass on prenatal ultrasonography. Few cases of intrauterine CFS have been reported to date. When CFS ...develops prenatally, it usually grows rapidly, and resection is difficult at birth. We successfully resected a tumor after birth, and there has been no recurrence after 2 years. This patient is the first known survivor of CFS diagnosed prenatally.
To clarify the changes in vascular resistance in Crohn's disease, we studied changes in the thickness of arterial media histometrically. The resected specimens of mesenterium and intestine from 18 ...patients with Crohn's disease were used. Each intestinal lesion was classified into three grades: no inflammation, exudative change, and fibrosing change. In the ileum, significant atrophy in the media of the submucosal peripheral arteries was noted during exudative and fibrosing changes, while in the submucosal larger vessels or in the mesenterium, the thickness of the arterial media did not change. In the colon, atrophy in the media of the submucosal arteries was noted in all stages except in the larger vessel during exudative change, while no significant changes were noted in the mesenterium. In conclusion, it is suggested that circulatory disturbance occurs even in the early stage in Crohn's disease, and there seems to be increased vascular resistance in the area between the deep submucosal and the distal mesenteric arteries.
The purpose of this study was to determine distinguishing features of three diseases that are distributed along the lymphatics.
CT scans of 40 patients with lymphangitic carcinomatosis, 41 with ...sarcoidosis, and 44 with malignant lymphoma were retrospectively reviewed. We evaluated the degree of involvement of the interlobular septa, bronchovascular structures, subpleural interstitium, and other CT findings.
The number of thickened interlobular septa and the extent of involvement of the subpleural interstitium in lymphangitic carcinomatosis were higher than those in sarcoidosis and malignant lymphoma (p<0.0001). Nodules of >1 cm in diameter were more often seen in malignant lymphoma (41.0%) than in the other two diseases (p < 0.001). Bilateral distribution was more common in sarcoidosis (100%) than in the others (p<0.001).
The major difference among lymphangitic carcinomatosis, sarcoidosis, and malignant lymphoma is the greater involvement of the interlobular septa and subpleural interstitium in lymphangitic carcinomatosis than in either sarcoidosis or malignant lymphoma.
We investigated three-dimensional decrease in the volume of the pulp chamber caused by age-related secondary dentin formation using micro-CT and evaluated the applicability of the results to ...evaluation of age taking into account sex, age and tooth type. Decrease was slightly higher in females than in males, and a higher correlation between decrease and aging was observed in females. A comparison between age-groups revealed that decrease progressed between the fifties and sixties in males, and the forties and fifties in females. A stronger correlation between aging and decrease was observed in the mandibular central incisors than in the mandibular second premolars. This correlation was higher than other correlations between sexes and age-groups.
We have experienced a patient in whom venous air embolism reoccurred, when the patient's position was changed from sitting to supine. A 40 year old male with Arnold-Chiari malformation underwent ...suboccipital decompression and cervical laminectomy under the sitting position. During surgery, three episodes of venous air embolism were detected by high pitched sound through precordial ultrasound Doppler stethoscope, an abrupt increase in pulmonary arterial pressure, a decrease in end-tidal carbon dioxide concentration; and a small amount of bubbled air was removed from the central venous catheter. At the end of surgery when the patient was turned to supine position, the signs of venous air embolism reappeared and 3 ml of bubbled air was also removed. This case suggests that there is some remaining air in the large veins of the upper part of the body once the air embolism has occurred during sitting position and thus we need to confirm that no air is left in the large veins before repositioning. We should be cautious of reoccurrence of venous air embolism whenever patient's position is changed.
