Super-Kamiokande (SK), a 50 kton water Cherenkov detector in Japan, is observing neutrinos and searching for proton decay and dark matter. The installation of new front-end electronics in 2008 marks ...the beginning of the 4th phase of SK (SK-IV). With the improvement of the water circulation system, calibration methods, reduction cuts, this phase achieved the lowest energy threshold thus far: 3.5 MeV kinetic energy. SK studies the effects of both the solar and terrestrial matter density on neutrino oscillations: a distortion of the solar neutrino energy spectrum would be caused by the edge of the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein resonance in the solar core, and terrestrial matter effects would induce a day/night solar neutrino flux asymmetry. SK observed solar neutrino interactions for more than 20 years. This long operation covers about ∼2 solar activity cycles. An analysis about a possible correlation between solar neutrino flux and 11 year activity cycle will be presented.
Amelogenin plays a crucial role in tooth enamel formation, and mutations on X-chromosomal amelogenin cause X-linked amelogenesis imperfecta (AI). Amelogenin pre–messenger RNA (mRNA) is highly ...alternatively spliced, and during alternative splicing, exon4 is mostly skipped, leading to the formation of a microRNA (miR-exon4) that has been suggested to function in enamel and bone formation. While delivering the functional variation of amelogenin proteins, alternative splicing of exon4 is the decisive first step to producing miR-exon4. However, the factors that regulate the splicing of exon4 are not well understood. This study aimed to investigate the association between known mutations in exon4 and exon5 of X chromosome amelogenin that causes X-linked AI, the splicing of exon4, and miR-exon4 formation. Our results showed mutations in exon4 and exon5 of the amelogenin gene, including c.120T>C, c.152C>T, c.155C>G, and c.155delC, significantly affected the splicing of exon4 and subsequent miR-exon4 production. Using an amelogenin minigene transfected in HEK-293 cells, we observed increased inclusion of exon4 in amelogenin mRNA and reduced miR-exon4 production with these mutations. In silico analysis predicted that Ser/Arg-rich RNA splicing factor (SRSF) 2 and SRSF5 were the regulatory factors for exon4 and exon5 splicing, respectively. Electrophoretic mobility shift assay confirmed that SRSF2 binds to exon4 and SRSF5 binds to exon5, and mutations in each exon can alter SRSF binding. Transfection of the amelogenin minigene to LS8 ameloblastic cells suppressed expression of the known miR-exon4 direct targets, Nfia and Prkch, related to multiple pathways. Given the mutations on the minigene, the expression of Prkch has been significantly upregulated with c.155C>G and c.155delC mutations. Together, we confirmed that exon4 splicing is critical for miR-exon4 production, and mutations causing X-linked AI in exon4 and exon5 significantly affect exon4 splicing and following miR-exon4 production. The change in miR-exon4 would be an additional etiology of enamel defects seen in some X-linked AI.
Since the conventional coherent transceiver is costly to be deployed in short-reach networks due to its complicated receiver structure, it is desired to simplify the structure itself. In this paper, ...we propose a simple polarization-diversity coherent receiver structure by exploiting the concept of the Stokes analyzer. Compared to the conventional architecture, the number of the photodiodes (PDs) is reduced from eight to six without relying on complicated analog circuits. In addition, splitters and combiners for dual-polarization (DP) signals can be replaced with only one polarization beam splitter or combiner (PBS/C). For evaluation of the proof-of-concept (PoC), we developed a prototype of the receiver using free-space optical components. We demonstrate the transmission of 120-Gb/s DP quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) and DP 8-ary quadrature-amplitude modulation (8QAM) signals over a 100-km single-mode fiber (SMF). We believe that the demonstrated architecture could potentially be integrated monolithically on silicon-photonic or InP platforms to realize compact and low-cost coherent transceivers for short-reach applications.

Furthermore, they provide evidence that this enzyme-replacement therapy, applied early in post-natal life – where the majority of tooth root development occurs, including acellular cementum formation – could prevent the accelerated tooth loss seen in individuals with HPP.
Abstract In addition to cognitive impairment, behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are another important aspect of most dementia patients. This study was designed for a new simple ...assessment of BPSD. We first employed a clinical survey for the local community with sending an inquiry letter to all members (n = 129) of dementia caregiver society, and then attempted to create a new BPSD score for dementia with 10 BPSD items. This new simple BPSD score was compared to a standard-detailed BPSD score neuropsychiatric inventory (NPI) for a possible correlation (n = 792) and a time to complete (n = 136). Inter-rater reliability was examined comparing scores between main and second caregivers (n = 70) for AD. Based on the clinical survey for local caregivers, a new BPSD score for dementia (ABS, Abe's BPSD score) was newly created, in which each BPSD item was allotted by an already-weighted score (maximum 1–9) based on the frequency and severity, and was finalized with taking temporal occurrences into account. ABS was filled by the main caregiver with a full score of 44, was well correlated with NPI (r = 0.716, **p < 0.01) in 792 AD patients (age 78.6 ± 7.0 years, MMSE 19.0 ± 5.9), and took a shorter time as only 56.8 ± 38.8 s (**p < 0.01) than NPI score (132.7 ± 94.0 s) with 136 AD patients. A high inter-rater reliability was obtained (r = 0.964, **p < 0.01) with a little smaller score (0.877 time) of ABS in secondary than the main caregivers. ABS provides a new simple and quick test for BPSD assessment, with a good correlation to NPI but a shorter time, and with a high inter-rater reliability. Thus ABS is useful for evaluating BPSD for mild to moderate dementia patients.

Sea surface temperatures were warmer throughout 1998 at Sesoko Island, Japan, than in the 10 preceding years. Temperatures peaked at 2.8 °C above average, resulting in extensive coral bleaching and ...subsequent coral mortality. Using random quadrat surveys, we quantitatively documented the coral community structure one year before and one year after the bleaching event. The 1998 bleaching event reduced coral species richness by 61% and reduced coral cover by 85%. Colony morphology affected bleaching vulnerability and subsequent coral mortality. Finely branched corals were most susceptible, while massive and encrusting colonies survived. Most heavily impacted were the branched Acropora and pocilloporid corals, some of which showed local extinction. We suggest two hypotheses whose synergistic effect may partially explain observed mortality patterns (i.e. preferential survival of thick‐tissued species, and shape‐dependent differences in colony mass‐transfer efficiency). A community‐structural shift occurred on Okinawan reefs, resulting in an increase in the relative abundance of massive and encrusting coral species.
Although branch duct intraductal papillary-mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) of the pancreas without mural nodules are frequently observed in asymptomatic subjects, the natural history of these lesions has ...never been studied. The aim of this study was to elucidate the natural history of branch duct IPMNs without mural nodules.
Eighty-two patients who had no apparent mural nodules on initial examination were selected for follow-up. All subjects underwent examinations by imaging modalities including endoscopic retrograde pancreatography, and were followed-up by regular examinations once or twice a year. Serial changes of the maximum cystic diameter and the appearance of mural nodules were studied during the observation periods ranging from 14 to 148 months (median, 61 months).
Nine (11.0%) of 82 patients exhibited obvious progression of cystic dilatation (median, 59 months). Of these nine patients with cystic enlargement, six continued with regular follow-up examinations. Three cases underwent surgical resection, and were pathologically diagnosed as adenoma in two and borderline in one. Four patients (4.9%) showed newly developed mural nodules in dilated branch ducts (median, 105 months). Histological analysis revealed three cases classified as adenoma and one as carcinoma in situ. None of the remaining 69 patients (84.1%) showed any changes in dilated branch ducts (median, 57 months).
Most branch duct IPMNs without mural nodules remained unchanged during long-term follow-up. Although follow-up with careful examination is required to detect newly developed mural nodules in dilated branch ducts, branch duct IPMNs without mural nodules can be followed-up without surgery.
