The critic and publisher’s reader Edward Garnett is a neglected figure, both generally and in studies of the poet and nature writer Edward Thomas. This paper outlines the literary friendship of ...Thomas and Garnett from their meeting in 1905 up to Garnett’s promotion of Thomas’s reputation after his death in the First World War. It argues that Garnett’s encouragement of Thomas to write from his heart, especially in short pieces of creative prose, prepared the way for the poems for which Thomas is best known. Garnett’s promotion of Thomas’s work is situated within Garnett’s larger mission of facilitating the publication of high-quality literature that was original, authentic, and ethically responsive to the world—in contrast to the popularization of the British periodical press wrought by Alfred Harmsworth, which not only undermined Thomas’s livelihood as a literary journalist but also clamoured for the war that killed him.
This practice-based study reports on a project to reconstruct from Gloucestershire's surviving folklore 30 stories able both to entertain a live audience and serve an 'ecobardic' intention of ...stimulating ecological consciousness. The article focuses on the legend of 'The Deerhurst Dragon', which belongs to a 'composted' tradition of dragon-slaying stories. Inspired by local history and field observation of the landscape of the legend, the author reconfigures the tale to expose the conflict likely to arise between large predators and an expanding human population. By attracting empathy to both dragon-slayer and dragon, he hopes to spark questions with implications for real-world conflicts at the same time as enchanting the locality with renewed knowledge of the legend.

One of a series addressing different countries, this article presents a ‘Top Ten’ choice of books about Greece plus forty or so supplementary titles. ‘Greece’ is conceptualized as including not only ...the modern nation state but also the broader Greek oikoumene spanning 5000 years of history. Continuities through history are emphasized to avoid a polarized perspective of ‘ancient’ and ‘modern’ Greece. The books selected cover: history, myth and folklore, biography, fiction, poetry, art, travel, society and environment, philosophy, and current affairs. Together they convey not only the distinctiveness and complexity of Greek civilization but also its perennial international significance.
