Super-Earths belong to a class of planet not found in the Solar system, but which appear common in the Galaxy. Given that some super-Earths are rocky, while others retain substantial atmospheres, ...their study can provide clues as to the formation of both rocky and gaseous planets, and – in particular – they can help to constrain the role of photoevaporation in sculpting the exoplanet population. GJ 9827 is a system already known to host three super-Earths with orbital periods of 1.2, 3.6, and 6.2 d. Here, we use new HARPS-N radial velocity measurements, together with previously published radial velocities, to better constrain the properties of the GJ 9827 planets. Our analysis cannot place a strong constraint on the mass of GJ 9827 c, but does indicate that GJ 9827 b is rocky with a composition that is probably similar to that of the Earth, while GJ 9827 d almost certainly retains a volatile envelope. Therefore, GJ 9827 hosts planets on either side of the radius gap that appears to divide super-Earths into pre-dominantly rocky ones that have radii below ∼1.5Rꚛ, and ones that still retain a substantial atmosphere and/or volatile components, and have radii above ∼2Rꚛ. That the less heavily irradiated of the three planets still retains an atmosphere, may indicate that photoevaporation has played a key role in the evolution of the planets in this system.
In this study, organoclay and clay-biopolymer composites were evaluated for the adsorption process of an anionic red dye, Allura Red (AR), in aqueous solution. For this purpose, the cationic exchange ...capacity (CEC) of a natural bentonite was calculated, and it was modified with the cationic surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (OB). Furthermore, a commercial montmorillonite modified with dimethyldialkyl ammonium (OM) was also employed. These organo-modified clays were used for the synthesis of two series of composites, with alginate as the polymer matrix, and were identified as OBC and OMC, respectively; composites were obtained in the wet (W) and dry (D) states. The adsorbent materials were characterized by means of infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and dispersive energy spectroscopy (EDS). Afterwards, kinetics and isotherms studies were performed in batch systems, with dye solutions of different concentrations, without pH adjustment. Some parameters were evaluated, such as the variation of the pH value of the solution and the concentration of the dye with the organoclays and composites. Chemisorption was considered as the main mechanism that follows the adsorption processes of AR. Results demonstrated that the pseudo-second order was the kinetics model that best described the adsorption process of the AR dye, with both, hydrated and dry composites. Finally, the Freundlich and the Langmuir–Freundlich isotherms were the best models that described the hydrated and dry composites behavior, respectively.
In this paper, a risk parity strategy based on portfolio kurtosis as reference measure is introduced. This strategy allocates the asset weights in a portfolio in a manner that allows an homogeneous ...distribution of responsibility for portfolio returns' huge dispersion, since portfolio kurtosis puts more weight on extreme outcomes than standard deviation does. Therefore, the goal of the strategy is not the minimization of kurtosis, but rather its 'fair diversification' among assets. An original closed-form expression for portfolio kurtosis is devised to set up the optimization problem for this type of risk parity strategy. The latter is then compared with the one based on standard deviation by using data from a global equity investment universe and implementing an out-of-sample analysis. The kurtosis-based risk parity strategy has interesting portfolio effects, with lights and shadows. It outperforms the traditional risk parity according to main risk-adjusted performance measures. In terms of asset allocation solutions, it provides more unbalanced and more erratic portfolio weights (albeit without excluding any component) in comparison to those pertaining the traditional risk parity strategy.
Although whole‐exome sequencing (WES) is the gold standard for the diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), it remains expensive for some genetic centers. Commercialized panels comprising ...all OMIM‐referenced genes called “medical exome” (ME) constitute an alternative strategy to WES, but its efficiency is poorly known. In this study, we report the experience of 2 clinical genetic centers using ME for diagnosis of NDDs. We recruited 216 consecutive index patients with NDDs in 2 French genetic centers, corresponded to the daily practice of the units and included non‐syndromic intellectual disability (NSID, n = 33), syndromic ID (NSID = 122), pediatric neurodegenerative disorders (n = 7) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD, n = 54). We sequenced samples from probands and their parents (when available) with the Illumina TruSight One sequencing kit. We found pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants in 56 index patients, for a global diagnostic yield of 25.9%. The diagnosis yield was higher in patients with ID as the main diagnosis (32%) than in patients with ASD (3.7%). Our results suggest that the use of ME is a valuable strategy for patients with ID when WES cannot be used as a routine diagnosis tool.

The COVID-19 pandemic is currently a severe challenge for healthcare workers, with a considerable impact on their mental health. In order to focus preventive and rehabilitation measures it's ...fundamental to identify risk factors of such psychological impairment. We designed an observational longitudinal study to systematically examine the psychological wellbeing of all employees in a large University Hospital in Italy, using validated psychometric scales in the context of the occupational physician's health surveillance, in collaboration with Psychiatric Unit.
The study started after ethical approval in August 2020. For each worker, the psychological wellbeing is screened in two steps. The first level questionnaire collects sociodemographic characteristics, personal and occupational COVID-19 exposure, worries and concerns about COVID-19, general psychological discomfort (GHQ-12), post-traumatic stress symptoms (IES-R) and anxiety (GAD-7). Workers who score above the cut-off in at least one scale are further investigated by the second level questionnaire composed by PHQ-9, DES-II and SCL-90. If second level shows psychological impairments, we offer individual specialist treatment (third level). We plan to follow-up all subjects to monitor symptoms and possible chronicization; we aim to investigate potential risk factors through univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regressions.
Preliminary results refer to a sample of 550 workers who completed the multi-step evaluation from August to December 2020, before vaccination campaign started. The participation rate was 90%. At first level screening, 39% of the subjects expressed general psychological discomfort (GHQ-12), 22% post-traumatic stress symptoms (IES-R), and 21% symptoms of anxiety (GAD-7). Women, nurses, younger workers, subjects with COVID-19 working exposure and with an infected family member showed significantly higher psychological impairment compared to colleagues. After the second level screening, 12% and 7% of all workers showed, respectively, depressive and dissociative symptoms; scorings were significantly associated with gender and occupational role. We are currently extending sample size and evaluating subjects over a period of further 12 months.
The possibility to perform a systematic follow-up of psychological wellbeing of all hospital workers, directly or indirectly exposed to pandemic consequences, constitutes a unique condition to detect individual, occupational, and non-occupational risk factors for psychological impairment in situations of prolonged stress, as well as variables associated with symptoms chronicization.
Chronic hyperglycemia is associated with low response to aerobic exercise training in rodent models and humans, including reduced aerobic exercise capacity and impaired oxidative remodeling in ...skeletal muscle. Here, we investigated whether glucose lowering with the sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor (SGLT2i), canagliflozin (Cana; 30 mg/kg/day), could restore exercise training response in a model of hyperglycemia (low-dose streptozotocin STZ). Cana effectively prevented increased blood glucose in STZ-treated mice. After 6 weeks of voluntary wheel running, Cana-treated mice displayed improvements in aerobic exercise capacity, higher capillary density in striated muscle, and a more oxidative fiber-type in skeletal muscle. In contrast, these responses were blunted or absent in STZ-treated mice. Recent work implicates glucose-induced accumulation of skeletal muscle extracellular matrix (ECM) and hyperactivation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK)/SMAD2 mechanical signaling as potential mechanisms underlying poor exercise response. In line with this, muscle ECM accretion was prevented by Cana in STZ-treated mice. JNK/SMAD2 signaling with acute exercise was twofold higher in STZ compared with control but was normalized by Cana. In human participants, ECM accumulation was associated with increased JNK signaling, low VO2peak, and impaired metabolic health (oral glucose tolerance test-derived insulin sensitivity). These data demonstrate that hyperglycemia-associated impairments in exercise adaptation can be ameliorated by cotherapy with SGLT2i.
The sorption behaviors of brilliant blue FCF dye by natural clay and modified with iron chloride were determined. The materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron ...microscopy, and the zero point charges were also determined. The effects of pH, contact time, dye concentration, and temperature were considered. The results showed that clay does not suffer any important change in its structure after the chemical treatments. The pH influences the sorption of the dye in the unmodified clay, but this effect was not observed in the iron-modified clay. The equilibrium time and the sorption capacity for the unmodified clay were 48 h and 6.16 mg/g, while for the iron-modified clay, 24 h and 14.22 mg/g, respectively. The sorption kinetics results were best adjusted to the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models. Sorption isotherms were best adjusted to the Langmuir model, indicating that both clays have a homogeneous surface. Thermodynamic parameters (

marker, to determine the distribution of these species, and to test their pathogenicity and virulence on mango fruits. Surveys were carried out from 2010 to 2012 in 59 commercial orchards in the major mango growing states of Mexico, and a total of 118 isolates were obtained from leaves, twigs, and fruits with typical anthracnose symptoms. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) activation by lipopolysaccharides (LPS) increases proinflammatory cytokine production and upregulation of muscle atrophy signaling pathways. Muscle contractions can ...suppress LPS/TLR4 axis activation by reducing the protein expression of TLR4 on immune cells. However, the mechanism by which muscle contractions decrease TLR4 remains undefined. Moreover, it is not clear whether muscle contractions affect TLR4 expressed on skeletal muscle cells. The purpose of this study was to uncover the nature and mechanisms by which stimulated myotube contractions using electrical pulse stimulation (EPS) as an in vitro model of skeletal muscle contractions affect TLR4 expression and intracellular signaling to combat LPS-induced muscle atrophy. C2C12 myotubes were stimulated to contract via EPS with and without subsequent LPS exposure. We then examined the isolated effects of conditioned media (CM) collected following EPS and soluble TLR4 (sTLR4) alone on LPS-induced myotube atrophy. Exposure to LPS decreased membrane-bound and sTLR4, increased TLR4 signaling (decreased inhibitor of κBα), and induced myotube atrophy. However, EPS decreased membrane-bound TLR4, increased sTLR4, and prevented LPS-induced signaling and myotube atrophy. CM, which contained elevated levels of sTLR4, prevented LPS-induced upregulation of atrophy-related gene transcripts muscle ring finger 1 (MuRF1) and atrogin-1 and reduced myotube atrophy. Recombinant sTLR4 added to media prevented LPS-induced myotube atrophy. In summary, our study provides the first evidence that sTLR4 has anticatabolic effects by reducing TLR4-mediated signaling and atrophy. In addition, the study reveals a novel finding, by demonstrating that stimulated myotube contractions decrease membrane-bound TLR4 and increase the secretion of sTLR4 by myotubes.
Excessive Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) activation causes muscle atrophy. Muscle contractions can limit TLR4 activation on immune cells, but its impact on TLR4 expressed on skeletal muscle cells remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate in C2C12 myotubes for the first time that stimulated myotube contractions reduce membrane-bound TLR4 and increase soluble TLR4, preventing TLR4-mediated signaling and myotube atrophy. Further analyses revealed soluble TLR4 independently prevents myotube atrophy, supporting a potential therapeutic role in combating TLR4-mediated atrophy.
Nous avons analysé l’évolution en post-ménopause de 72 patientes avec prolactinome (dont 14 avec macroadénome), diagnostiqué et traité par agoniste dopaminergique (AD) pendant leur période fertile.
...La prolactinémie (PRL) médiane et la surface tumorale diminuaient significativement sous traitement par AD après ménopause (de 14,4μg/L et 13,9mm2 à 7,8μg/L et 7,1mm2 24 mois après ménopause ; p<0,05). Des critères stricts d’arrêt des AD (absence de symptômes, PRL normale sous dose de cabergoline ≤0,5mg/semaine pendant au moins 24 mois, surface coronale stable ou diminuée depuis le diagnostic) étaient rencontrés chez 56 patientes (80 %) mais un arrêt des AD n’a été réalisé que chez 45. Parmi celles-ci, 32 (71 %) sont restées en rémission après un suivi médian de 26 mois et 13 (29 %) ont récidivé après une durée de 5,5 mois (valeurs extrêmes : 2–47). Plus de la moitié des récidives survenaient endéans la première année. Une analyse multivariée a montré que le seul facteur prédictif indépendant de rémission prolongée était la PRL observée 3–6 mois après l’arrêt d’AD (OR : 1,271 ; IC 95 % 1,011–1,598, p=0,040),. Le traitement hormonal substitutif de la ménopause n’influençait pas le risque de récidive.
En conclusion, notre étude confirme que la ménopause exerce un effet bénéfique sur l’évolution naturelle des prolactinomes. En utilisant des critères stricts d’arrêt du traitement par AD en post-ménopause, retrouvés chez 80 % de nos patientes, une rémission clinique et biologique a pu être observée chez plus de 2/3 d’entre elles.
