Romantic relationships are often fraught with challenges for individuals post-release. Yet, few relationships-focused services are offered during this important and complex transitional period. Using ...pre- and post-test survey data, this pilot study of 63 men living in a residential substance treatment facility post release evaluated the impact of a 20-h individual-oriented relationship education (RE) program (Within My Reach) on attitudes toward intimate partner violence (IPV), sexist beliefs, attitudes toward infidelity, relational efficacy, and relationship decision making. Results showed a significant decrease in support of IPV at pre- and post-test even after controlling for education, number of children, and relationship status.
Using qualitative content analysis from the written comments of 404 primarily heterosexual college students, we examined (1) their expectations for pornography use while married or in a committed ...long-term relationship and (2) variations by gender. Four prominent groups emerged. A majority of men (70.8 %) and almost half of women (45.5 %) reported circumstances (alone or with their partners) wherein pornography use was acceptable in a relationship and several conditions for, and consequences associated with, such use also emerged. Another group (22.3 % men; 26.2 % women) viewed pornography use as unacceptable because of being in a committed relationship whereas a third group (5.4 % men; 12.9 % women) reported that pornography use was unacceptable in any context or circumstance. A final group emerged of a few women (10.4 %) who stated that a partner’s use of pornography was acceptable, but they did not expect to use it personally. Implications for relationship education among emerging adults and future research on pornography use within the context of romantic relationships are discussed.
An examination of the sexual attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors post-incarceration was conducted in the current study. Further, factors linked to sexual health (i.e., age, race, education, length ...imprisoned), as well as pornography consumption, and infidelity, were examined. Data were collected from 100 heterosexual men released from incarceration in the last 36 months. The prevalence of risky sexual behaviors and correlations among all sexual behavior, attitude, and knowledge items were analyzed. A series of multivariate regression models examined the moderating effect of certain demographic factors between condom use and STI/HIV testing. The most notable results revealed that a vast majority of participants engaged in inconsistent condom use during vaginal (77%), oral (92%), and anal (71%) sex. Most participants (70%) tested for STIs infrequently after engaging in unprotected sex. Consistent with this, most participants lacked knowledge about STIs, as demonstrated by the fact that, on average, they answered 37% of questions assessing knowledge on STIs correctly. Research about individuals' sexual health risks post-incarceration commonly focuses on those diagnosed with HIV/AIDS despite most men being HIV-seronegative post-incarceration. Empirical research that directly assesses men's sexual attitudes, knowledge and behaviors post-incarceration more generally is warranted and, therefore, the current study's primary objective. Further, little but existing literature contends that a lack of sexual health knowledge and education are closely linked to safe sex practices post-incarceration. The current study examined these relationships further.
The current study examined how relational factors (i.e., communication, trust, relationship satisfaction, and commitment) link to sexual health outcomes (i.e., condom use, knowledge about a partner's ...sexual history, and condom use self-efficacy) among female college students in exclusive heterosexual dating relationships (
n
= 89). The hierarchical linear regression analyses revealed that female college students in exclusive dating relationships who reported greater dyadic trust were more likely to report consistently using condoms and asking partners about their sexual history. Findings suggest the need for sexual education curricula that utilize dimensions of dyadic trust to address safe sex practices among female college students. More detailed recommendations are also discussed.
Family therapy has helped repair relational ruptures and restore stability within families for decades. However, service can be inaccessible and underutilized among many minoritized and stigmatized ...groups, including families post‐release. Harmful sociocultural and relational experiences pose considerable risks to families before, during, and after incarceration. While not exhaustive, this article highlights potential attitudinal, relational, and logistical obstacles to family therapy engendered by therapists, clients, or both. Feasible and accessible clinically oriented conceptual and practical pathways of support to combat such obstacles are outlined to help therapists attract and retain families post‐release.

Given that marriage and family therapists are exposed to a wide range of circumstances that leave them uniquely vulnerable to experiencing compassion fatigue, it is important to examine the stresses ...and hazards they face and what those consequences mean for both themselves and clients. It is essential that they identify how compassion fatigue negatively affects the therapeutic relationship and overall treatment outcome as well as that of the personal life of the family therapist. The marriage and family therapist is responsible and ethically obligated to identify and implement ways in which he or she can prevent and remedy compassion fatigue.
Infidelity has a permeating impact on social systems, but no system is more impacted by infidelity than the nuclear family. This paper examines the impact of parental infidelity on the family using a ...structural family therapy (SFT) framework. Conceptualizing and treating infidelity from an SFT approach provides a systemic understanding of how interactions between the parental units about infidelity impact parent–child dynamics. Clinical recommendations are outlined for couple and family therapists to help families find healthy and adaptable ways to create and maintain structures that minimize the harmful impact of infidelity on the family system.
This article explores structural-strategic family therapy as a treatment modality for couples with problems of intimacy and sexual desire. Parents whose presenting problem involves a child with ...problematic behavior may also struggle with problems in their intimate relationship. Instead of speaking to these problems directly, however, the couple may communicate about their intimate problems via the metaphor of their "problem" child. Structural-strategic family therapy can then be utilized to strengthen the parental subsystem by establishing a parenting team, which in turn nourishes the partner subsystem. Success is then measured not only by improvements in the child's behavior, but also by the enhancement of intimacy and sexual desire between partners.
Internet pornography is a multi-billion-dollar industry that has grown increasingly accessible. Delay discounting involves devaluing larger, later rewards in favor of smaller, more immediate rewards. ...The constant novelty and primacy of sexual stimuli as particularly strong natural rewards make Internet pornography a unique activator of the brain's reward system, thereby having implications for decision-making processes. Based on theoretical studies of evolutionary psychology and neuroeconomics, two studies tested the hypothesis that consuming Internet pornography would relate to higher rates of delay discounting. Study 1 used a longitudinal design. Participants completed a pornography use questionnaire and a delay discounting task at Time 1 and then again four weeks later. Participants reporting higher initial pornography use demonstrated a higher delay discounting rate at Time 2, controlling for initial delay discounting. Study 2 tested for causality with an experimental design. Participants were randomly assigned to abstain from either their favorite food or pornography for three weeks. Participants who abstained from pornography use demonstrated lower delay discounting than participants who abstained from their favorite food. The finding suggests that Internet pornography is a sexual reward that contributes to delay discounting differently than other natural rewards. Theoretical and clinical implications of these studies are highlighted.
