Muon-neutrino elastic scattering on electrons is an observable neutrino process whose cross section is precisely known. Consequently a measurement of this process in an accelerator-based nu sub(mu) ...beam can improve the knowledge of the absolute neutrino flux impinging upon the detector; typically this knowledge is limited to ~10% due to uncertainties in hadron production and focusing. We have isolated a sample of 135+ or -17 neutrino-electron elastic scattering candidates in the segmented scintillator detector of MINERvA, after subtracting backgrounds and correcting for efficiency. We show how this sample can be used to reduce the total uncertainty on the NuMI flux nu sub(mu) from 9% to 6%. Our measurement provides a flux constraint that is useful to other experiments using the NuMI beam, and this technique is applicable to future neutrino beams operating at multi-GeV energies.
ObjectiveRacism is a public health crisis that impacts on children’s mental health, yet mental health service systems are insufficiently focused on addressing racism. Moreover, a focus on ...interpersonal racism and on individual coping with the impacts of racism has been prioritized over addressing structural racism at the level of the service system and associated institutions. In this paper, we examine strategies to address structural racism via policies affecting children’s mental health services.MethodFirst, we identify and analyze federal and state policies focused on racism and mental health equity. Second, we evaluate areas of focus in these policies and discuss the evidence base informing their implementation. Finally, we provide recommendations for what states, counties, cities, and mental health systems can do to promote antiracist evidence-based practices in children’s mental health.ResultsOur analysis highlights gaps and opportunities in the evidence base for policy implementation strategies, including the following: mental health services for youth of color, interventions addressing interpersonal racism and bias in the mental health service system, interventions addressing structural racism, changes to provider licensure and license renewal, and development of the community health workforce.ConclusionRecommendations are provided both within and across systems to catalyze broader systems transformation.
The discovery of a new chemical element with atomic number Z=117 is reported. The isotopes (293)117 and (294)117 were produced in fusion reactions between (48)Ca and (249)Bk. Decay chains involving ...11 new nuclei were identified by means of the Dubna gas-filled recoil separator. The measured decay properties show a strong rise of stability for heavier isotopes with Z > or = 111, validating the concept of the long sought island of enhanced stability for superheavy nuclei.

Cross-sectional study.
In total, 84 obese children, 25 girls and 59 boys with median age and body mass index (BMI) of 12.0 years (interquartile range (IR): 9.5-14.0) and 30.3 kg/m(2) (IR: 27.1-33.4), respectively, referred for medical assessment were studied. All subjects underwent physical examination, anthropometric and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan measurements and real-time ultrasonographic (US) examination of the liver. Fasting blood samples were collected for the measurement of liver function, hepatitis status, levels of serum glucose and insulin and lipid profile. Degree of fatty infiltration of the liver was graded according to ultrasonic appearance of liver echotexture, liver-diaphragm differentiation in echo amplitude, hepatic echo penetration and clarity of hepatic blood vessels.
All recruited subjects had no history of alcohol abuse and tests for Hepatitis B or C virus were negative. Thorough examination showed all of them to be in general good health without signs of chronic liver disease. Hepatic steatosis identified by defined ultrasonic appearances was diagnosed in 65 subjects (77%); 17 girls and 48 boys. The severity of fatty liver was positively related to anthropometric measurements including BMI, waist and hip circumference, subscapular skinfold thickness; insulin resistance markers QUICKI and homeostasis model assessment (HOMA), and hypertriglyceridaemia. Multvariate ordinal regression analysis showed that BMI and raised alanine aminotransferase (ALT) were positively associated with fatty liver. Combination of hepatic steatosis with raised ALT (presumptive NASH) was found in 19 subjects (24%). This group of patients had significantly higher waist hip ratio and conicity index compared to those with isolated hepatic steatosis. Boys with presumed NASH were also found to have significantly higher insulin resistance.
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) was common among our cohort of obese children referred for medical assessment. The prevalence of simple steatosis and presumed NASH was 77 and 24%, respectively. The severity of US steatosis was positively correlated with BMI, raised ALT, insulin resistance and hypertryglyceridaemia. Ultrasonography being noninvasive and readily available could be used for the monitoring of the progression of hepatic steatosis. Further longitudinal studies are required to determine the natural disease progression and the role of insulin resistance and other factors in the pathophysiology of NAFLD.

Seven good- and fair-quality trials indicated that tamoxifen and raloxifene reduced incidence of invasive breast cancer by 7 to 9 cases in 1000 women over 5 years compared with placebo. New results from STAR (Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene) showed that tamoxifen reduced breast cancer incidence more than raloxifene by 5 cases in 1000 women. Neither reduced breast cancer-specific or all-cause mortality rates. Both reduced the incidence of fractures, but tamoxifen increased the incidence of thromboembolic events more than raloxifene by 4 cases in 1000 women. Tamoxifen increased the incidence of endometrial cancer and cataracts compared with placebo and raloxifene. Trials provided limited and heterogeneous data on medication adherence and persistence. Many women do not take tamoxifen because of associated harms. Thirteen risk-stratification models were modest predictors of breast cancer.
Data on mortality and adherence measures and for women who are nonwhite, are premenopausal, or have comorbid conditions were lacking.
Medications reduced the incidence of invasive breast cancer and fractures and increased the incidence of thromboembolic events. Tamoxifen was more effective than raloxifene but also increased the incidence of endometrial cancer and cataracts. Use is limited by adverse effects and inaccurate methods to identify candidates.

Carbonaceous asteroids, such as (101955) Bennu, preserve material from the early Solar System, including volatile compounds and organic molecules. We report spacecraft imaging and spectral data ...collected during and after retrieval of a sample from Bennu’s surface. The sampling event mobilized rocks and dust into a debris plume, excavating a 9-meter-long elliptical crater. This exposed material is darker, spectrally redder, and more abundant in fine particulates than the original surface. The bulk density of the displaced subsurface material was 500 to 700 kilograms per cubic meter, which is about half that of the whole asteroid. Particulates that landed on instrument optics spectrally resemble aqueously altered carbonaceous meteorites. The spacecraft stored 250 ± 101 grams of material, which will be delivered to Earth in 2023.

The near-Earth carbonaceous asteroid Bennu was the target of the OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer) sample return mission. After rendezvousing with the asteroid, the spacecraft spent 2 years studying its surface and selecting a suitable site. Lauretta

. describe the sample collection process and its effects on Bennu. The asteroid provided almost no resistance to contact, and the gas released by the spacecraft blew a crater several meters wide, exposing redder rocks and dust. So much material was gathered that the collection chamber overflowed. Approximately 250 grams was successfully stowed, well above the mission goal of 60 grams. Observations of Saturn's satellite Enceladus using Cassini's Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer instrument were obtained during three flybys of Enceladus in 2005. Enceladus' surface is composed ...mostly of nearly pure water ice except near its south pole, where there are light organics, CO₂, and amorphous and crystalline water ice, particularly in the region dubbed the "tiger stripes." An upper limit of 5 precipitable nanometers is derived for CO in the atmospheric column above Enceladus, and 2% for NH₃ in global surface deposits. Upper limits of 140 kelvin (for a filled pixel) are derived for the temperatures in the tiger stripes.
Human immunoglobulin prepared for intravenous administration (IGIV) has a number of important uses in the treatment of disease. Some of these are in diseases for which acceptable treatment ...alternatives do not exist. In this review we have evaluated the evidence underlying a wide variety of IGIV uses and make specific recommendations on the basis of these data. Given the potential risks and inherent scarcity of IGIV, careful consideration of the indications for and administration of IGIV is warranted.
The present study examined changes in sleep quality following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and investigated associations with biobehavioral factors. Individuals undergoing HSCT for ...hematologic malignancies (N=228) completed measures of sleep quality and psychological symptoms pre-transplant and 1, 3, 6 and 12 months post transplant. Circulating inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-α) were also assessed. Sleep quality was poorest at 1 month post transplant, improving and remaining relatively stable after 3 months post transplant. However, approximately half of participants continued to experience significant sleep disturbance at 6 and 12 months post transplant. Mixed-effects linear regression models indicated that depression and anxiety were associated with poorer sleep quality, while psychological well-being was associated with better sleep. Higher circulating levels of IL-6 were also linked with poorer sleep. Subject-level fixed effects models demonstrated that among individual participants, changes in depression, anxiety and psychological well-being were associated with corresponding changes in sleep after covarying for the effects of time since transplant. Sleep disturbance was most severe when depression and anxiety were greatest and psychological well-being was lowest. Findings indicate that sleep disturbance is a persistent problem during the year following HSCT. Patients experiencing depression or anxiety and those with elevated inflammation may be at particular risk for poor sleep.
