The Central Outer Tracker is a large cylindrical drift chamber constructed to replace Collider Detector at Fermilab's original central drift chamber for the higher luminosity expected for Run 2 at ...the Fermilab Tevatron. The chamber's drift properties are described in the context of meeting the operating requirements for Run 2. The design and construction of the chamber, the front-end readout electronics, and the high-voltage system are described in detail. Wire aging considerations are also discussed.
We derive a model-independent upper bound on the scale of Majorana-neutrino mass generation. The upper bound is 4pi (nu2)/square root3 m(nu), where nu approximately 246 GeV is the weak scale and ...m(nu) is the Majorana-neutrino mass. For neutrino masses implied by neutrino oscillation experiments, all but one of these bounds are less than the Planck scale, and they are all within a few orders of magnitude of the grand-unification scale.
Ovarian cancer is one of the most common gynecologic malignancies. It is characterized by a high mortality rate, which is mainly due to the asymptomatic course of the disease. In light of the high ...mortality rate and increasing morbidity, new diagnostic methods are being explored to enable earlier detection, better monitoring, and improved prognosis. Such diagnostic methods include the assessment of tumor markers in various biological samples. Among the markers currently being investigated, extracellular matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are of particular interest. The objective of this article was to compile the existing knowledge of MMPs in ovarian cancer patients and to describe their potential diagnostic utility. Additionally, this article provides an overview of the symptoms, complications, and risk factors associated with ovarian cancer and the role of MMPs in physiology and pathology. Preliminary results indicate that tissue expression and blood and body fluid levels of MMPs may be different in ovarian cancer patients than in healthy women. The expression and concentration of individual MMPs have been shown to be correlated with cancer stage and disease severity. In addition, the preliminary value of some of these enzymes in predicting prognosis is discussed. However, as the amount of data is limited, more studies are needed to fully evaluate the potential function of individual MMPs in ovarian cancer patients. Based on the knowledge gathered for this article, it seems that MMP-2, MMP-3, MMP-7, MMP-8, MMP-9, MMP-13, are tentatively the most useful. A thorough evaluation of their utility as modern biomarkers in ovarian cancer requires further investigation.
Introduction: Hallux valgus is a frequent painful deformity of the feet, and occurs most often in women of different ages. People with hallux valgus have, among others, a genetic predisposition, a ...weaker ligament-and joint structure of the foot, pes planus (flatfoot), rheumatoid arthritis, muscular balance disorders, are obese, and wear improper footwear.
Purpose: To assess the knowledge of beauty salon clients on the subject of professional care of hallux valgus.
Materials and methods: Research was conducted in a beauty salon in Lomza, Poland using an original questionnaire. The study was approved (No. 4/2013)
by the senate of the Ethics Committee of the Lomza
State University of Applied Sciences.
Results: The conducted research showed that 48% of the surveyed women dealt with hallux valgus using orthopedic insoles, and 26% underwent procedures recommended by a specialist. Respondents knew kinesiotherapy and taping as treatment methods for this ailment. The vast majority of the surveyed women would undergo non-surgical hallux valgus treatment, and only a few would opt for surgery.
Conclusions: The knowledge of the studied women about hallux valgus was quite extensive.
Introduction: Osteoarthritis an inflammatory process in the synovial membrane. These changes cause pain and joint deformities. Pharmacists can assess patients’ quality of life, which can be a good ...criterion for assessing analgesics treatment effectiveness and prevent the growing phenomenon of polypharmacy and self-treatment.
Purpose: To answer these questions: 1) Is there a relationship between the quality of life of patients with osteoarthritis taking analgesics and those with osteoarthritis taking analgesics and implemented rehabilitation? 2) Do patients using analgesics practice polypharmacy? 3) Are patients with osteoarthritis the main consumers of painkillers? and 4) Does the use of analgesics affect the health-related quality of life of patients with osteoarthritis?
Materials and methods: The study was conducted on 240 people who were divided into three groups: osteoarthritis, reference (generally healthy, occasionally taking analgesics), and control (generally healthy, no intake of analgesics). To assess the rise in analgesics consumption by patients with osteoarthritis and the phenomenon of polypharmacy, an original questionnaire was used.
Results: There is a relationship between the quality of life of patients with osteoarthritis taking analgesics. Statistical analysis showed that in the years 2013-2015 the purchase of prescription analgesics and without a prescription systematically, significantly increased.
Conclusions: Patients using analgesics unknowingly practice polypharmacy. In Ars Medica Pharmacies, analgesics purchases by patients with osteoarthritis grew significantly in the analyzed period, but they are not the main analgesics consumers. Use of analgesics by patients with osteoarthritis improves their health-related quality of life.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by progressive ...degradation and loss of articular cartilage as well as abnormal bone growth and remodeling, located directly under the cartilage. The aim of this study is to answer the question on which level OA patients perceive their quality of life dependent on health.
Material and methods: The Polish version of the HAQ questionnaire, assessing the quality of life over the past week, was used for overall assessment of quality of life. The Polish version of the AIMS-2 questionnaire was used as a specific questionnaire for assessing the health status of patients with osteoarthritis. Surveys were conducted in a group of 240 people.
Results: The quality of life dependent on health is significantly reduced in the group of healthy people who take painkillers sporadically because of other reasons and in the OA pateints group compared to the control group, the same as in the OA pateints group compared to the group of healthy people who take painkillers sporadically for other reasons.
Conclusions: According to the answers from the questionnaire, patients with OA seek different forms of improving their quality of life. It is important to change their lifestyle (weight reduction, using a bench-mounted bike, walking stick or walking frame), reducing the surface area of the joints, reducing the defective position of the limb axis. Exercises that increase muscle mass and exercises to improve joint mobility should be introduced. It is advisable to refer the OA patient for physical therapy and/or balneotherapy.

The mitral anulus is a dynamic structure that undergoes alterations in size and shape throughout the cardiac cycle, contracting during systole. Numerous reports have shown this systolic orifice ...reduction to be due chiefly to posterior annular contraction, whereas the anterior perimeter was unchanged. Segmental motion of the mitral anulus from true in vivo three-dimensional data, however, has not been described. We used radiopaque markers and simultaneous biplane videofluoroscopy to measure the lengths of mitral anular segments in seven closed-chest, sedated dogs. Eight markers were placed equidistant from each other around the mitral anulus. As viewed from the left atrium, segment 1 began at the posteromedial commissure, and the remaining segments were numbered sequentially clockwise around the anulus (that is, the posterior mitral anulus encompassed segments 1 to 4 and the anterior anulus encompassed segments 5 to 8). Marker image coordinates obtained from two orthogonal views 7 to 12 days after implantation were merged to construct three-dimensional marker coordinates at end-diastole and end-systole. Mitral annular segmental percent systolic shortening (negative values indicate lengthening) were as follows (mean ± standard deviation): segment 1, 7% ± 9%; segment 2, 8% ± 10%; segment 3, 16% ± 6%; segment 4, 10% ± 7%; segment 5, -4% ± 5%; segment 6, -7% ± 7%; segment 7, 3% ± 2%; and segment 8, 6% ± 5%. Liposuction is a type of aesthetic surgery that has been performed on humans for decades. There is not much literature addressing the subject matter of pre- and post-surgery blood parameters, ...although this information is rather interesting. Documentation on patients who received laser-assisted liposuction treatment is particularly scarce. Until now, there has been no literature showing values of platelets, lymphocytes, and neutrophils after liposuction.
The aim of the work is to analyze and interpret values of platelets, lymphocytes and neutrophils in patient blood before and after liposuction, a surgery in which an extraordinarily large amount of potent drugs are used. Moreover, the aim is to compare values changes in patients of conventional and laser-assisted liposuction.
We evaluated standard blood samples in patients prior to and after liposuction. This paper covers the number of platelets, lymphocytes, and neutrophils. A total of 54 patients were examined. Moreover, we compared the change in postoperative values in laser-assisted liposuction patients with the change of values in conventional liposuction patients. A paired two-sided Student's t-test was used for statistical evaluation. P < 0.005 was acknowledged to be statistically significant.
Values of platelets were raised both in conventional and in laser-assisted liposuction patients, but this difference was statistically non-significant and levels of platelets were still normal and within the range of blood levels in healthy patients. Values of neutrophils rose by up to 79.49% ± 7.74% standard deviation (SD) and values of lymphocytes dropped by up to 12.68% ± 5.61% SD. The before/after variances of conventional tumescent local anesthesia liposuction and variations in laser-assisted liposuction were similar for all measured parameters; they also showed no statistically significant differences between before and after surgery. The mean value of total operation time without laser-assistance was 3 hours 42 minutes (± 57 minutes SD, range 2 hours 50 minutes to 5 hours 10 minutes). Surgeries with laser-assistance were on average 16 minutes shorter with a mean duration of 3 hours 26 minutes (± 45 minutes SD, range 2 hours 40 minutes to 4 hours 10 minutes). The difference was not statistically significant (P < 0.06). The mean value of aspirate volume for liposuctions performed without laser support was 2,618 mL (± 633.7 SD, range 700 mL to 3,500 mL). Mean aspirate volume for liposuctions with laser assistance was increased by up to 61 mL (2,677 mL ± 499.5 SD, range 1,800 mL to 3,500 mL). The difference was not statistically significant (P < 0.71).
We conclude that conventional liposuction and laser-assisted liposuction have a similar influence on platelets, lymphocytes, and neutrophils in patients. Moreover, laser-assisted liposuction seems to be less time consuming than conventional liposuction.
