Understanding animal behavior is essential for the conservation of endangered species. We document the case of a female brown bear (Ursus arctos) burying her 2 cubs-of-the-year, following their death ...in a car accident in May 2020 in the Prefecture of Kastoria, northern Greece. Both cubs were partially buried, half-covered with earth in an open field. We explore the circumstances and causes of this unusual behavior in relation to 2 potential explanations: caching of food and ‘grieving.’ Although the evidence collected is not conclusive enough to accept either of the 2 explanations, we report this observation to draw attention to this type of behavior in brown bears in the wild and hope that it will serve as a source for motivating future research.

Abstract A best evidence topic was written according to a structured protocol. The question addressed was whether endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) for early oesophageal cancer gives equivalent ...oncological outcomes as compared to oesophagectomy. A total of 340 papers were found using the reported searches of which 7 represented the best evidence to answer the clinical question. The authors, date, journal, study type, population, main outcome measures and results are tabulated. Oesophagectomy with lymph node dissection for early oesophageal cancer is the standard to which every other treatment modality is compared to. However, the associated mortality and morbidity rates highlight the need for the development of effective, less invasive procedures. The evidence from the present review supports the use of EMR in this context as a first line treatment in T1a (mucosal) oesophageal cancer. The trade-off is a higher recurrence rate which can be dealt with successfully using a tight follow-up schedule and retreatment. The higher rates of lymph node involvement in T1b (submucosal) cancers preclude the use of endoscopic treatment in this setting except for patients unfit for surgery.

Designmethodologyapproach The ...approach is a case study in a Greek aerospace company, using Hellenic Aerospace Industry, SA HAI. The closed loop business operating system, MRP II is recognized as being an effective management system that has an excellent planning and scheduling capability, which can offer an increase in customer service, significant gains in productivity, higher inventory turns and reduction in material cost. Findings The implementation has included setting clear goals, following a formal implementation plan, using a project steering committee and project teams. However, some aspects such as limitations by Greek legislation, constraints in hardware, incomplete education and training of the personnel and the BOM data accuracy are discussed in the context of HAI Productivity and supply issues resulting from the implementation process are reviewed. Practical implications Although, the use of the MRP II system in industrial developed countries is extensive, in Greece it is still in its infancy. The design of functional polymeric materials with tunable response requires a synergetic use of macromolecular architecture and interactions. Here, we combine experiments with computer simulations to ...demonstrate how physical properties of gels can be tailored at the molecular level, using star block copolymers with alternating block sequences as a paradigm. Telechelic star polymers containing attractive outer blocks self-assemble into soft patchy nanoparticles, whereas their mirror-image inverted architecture with inner attractive blocks yields micelles. In concentrated solutions, bridged and interpenetrated hexagonally packed nanocylinders are formed, respectively, with distinct structural and rheological properties. The phase diagrams exhibit a peculiar re-entrance where the hexagonal phase melts upon both heating and cooling because of solvent–block and block–block interactions. The bridged nanostructure is characterized by similar deformability, extended structural coherence, enhanced elasticity, and yield stress compared to micelles or typical colloidal gels, which make them promising and versatile materials for diverse applications.
The importance of dust and biomass burning episodes on the atmospheric concentration of water-soluble reactive phosphate (SRP) was determined in the eastern Mediterranean. SRP was measured with a new ...rapid real-time automated analytical system with a time resolution of a few minutes per sample and with an extremely low detection limit. The average atmospheric concentration of SRP during the sampling campaign was estimated at 0.35 ± 0.25 (median 0.30) nmol P m−3. The maximum concentration of SRP (3.08 nmol P m−3) was recorded during an intense dust episode, and was almost ten times higher than the campaign average, confirming that Saharan dust was an important primary source of bioavailable P to the eastern Mediterranean, especially during the spring period when 60% of the events occurred. Predicted increases in the frequency and intensity of dust storms in the area will enhance the role of the atmosphere as a source of bioavailable P for the Mediterranean marine ecosystem. During the warm period, when Northerly winds prevailed, biomass burning processes contributed significantly to soluble phosphorus delivered from atmospheric sources to the eastern Mediterranean. These inputs during warm periods are especially important for the Eastern Mediterranean, where biological productivity is strongly limited by nutrient availability.

We combine state-of-the art synthesis, simulations, and physical experiments to explore the tunable, responsive character of telechelic star polymers as models for soft patchy particles. We focus on ...the simplest possible system: a star comprising three asymmetric block copolymer arms with solvophilic inner and solvophobic outer blocks. Our dilute solution studies reveal the onset of a second slow mode in the intermediate scattering functions as the temperature decreases below the θ-point of the outer block, as well as the size reduction of single stars upon further decreasing temperature. Clusters comprising multiple stars are formed and their average dimensions, akin to the single star size, counterintuitively decrease upon cooling. A similar phenomenology is observed in simulations upon increasing attraction between the outer blocks and is rationalized as a result of the interplay between interstar associations and steric repulsion between the star cores. Since our simulations are able to describe the experimental findings reliably, we can use them with confidence to make predictions at conditions and flow regimes that are inaccessible experimentally. Specifically, we employ simulations to investigate flow properties of the system at high shear rates, revealing shear thinning behavior caused by the breakup of interstar associations under flow. On the other hand, the zero-shear viscosity obtained experimentally exhibits a rather weak activation energy, which increases upon rising star concentration. These findings demonstrate the unusual properties of telechelic star polymers even in the dilute regime. They also offer a powerful toolbox for designing soft patchy particles and exploring their unprecedented responsive properties further on.
