Photographs in digital form is much more difficult to preserve than in films and prints. While long-term digital preservation has long been studied, the methods are for organizations, and are far ...from realistic for personal use. This paper proposes a new scheme for life-time personal photo preservation. In the scheme called a chain of equipments, a long-term photo preservation policy is determined first, and then manufacturers supply tailored storage devices, called ring equipments, under the policy. Complicated tasks for migration is encapsulated in the ring equipments, and a chain of ring equipments preserves photo data for a long time. The specifications of ring equipments are constrained only by the policy, and then the manufacturers can avoid technology obsolescence.
In this paper, we propose Color2Hatch, a decolorization method for business/presentation graphics. In Color2Hatch, each region represented as a closed path and uniformly colored in scalable vector ...graphics (SVG) is converted to a region hatched in black and white. From the characteristics of business graphics, the hatching patterns are designed to represent mainly the hue in the region; additionally, lightness and saturation can also be reflected. To discriminate subtle differences between colors, attached short line segments, zigzag lines, and wave lines are used in hatching by analogy to a clock. Compared with the existing decolorization methods, for example, grayscale conversion and texturing, our method is superior in the discrimination of regions, suitable for low-cost black and white printing that meets real-world needs.

In the proposed system, with an RFID tag in the plug and newly-designed sockets/power strips, the smart meter identifies appliances connected to individual (wall) sockets simply by connecting the appliances to the socket.

This paper presents a modeling method for NPR hair composed of parametric 3D clumps. The clump parameters are not only for modifying a single clump but also for modifying all or large part of clumps ...similarly and simultaneously, and then a user can create a hairstyle only by adjusting the parameters. Our experiments show that even naive users can model a variety of hairstyles with little effort.
This paper proposes a novel Non-Photorealistic Rendering (NPR) approach to acquiring reflectance distributions of specified objects in paintings, and to rendering three-dimensional objects with the ...obtained distributions. Compared with existing work, the approach enables us to get the shapes of objects in paintings in a much simpler fashion, and it is useful as a NPR inverse rendering approach.

Our physical experiences are best represented by body movements. Many limitations of existing systems/devices, however, prevent their use in archival of daily experiences. This paper proposes an ...integrated systemcomposed of PWS (Posture Web Server) and PHA (Posture History Archiver); The PWS has a palm-size controller and 15 light-weight tilt sensor devices, newly developed by us. The feature of our tilt device lies in measurement of 360 degrees inclinations in two directions. The PWS is worn by a user, and always monitors his/her body posture. It acts as a posture web server, that is, it sends his/her current postural data upon request via a wireless network.The PHA running on a PC sends requests to PWS periodically via a network, and then archives a time series of his/her postures called posture history. The whole/part of the history can be visualized depending on his/her preferences. In this paper, system design issues, development of tilt sensor devices, implementation, and our experimental results are described.
