Faculty members experience a gap between how they would prefer to spend their work time and how they actually do so. In this article we report results from a four-week workshop called “The Terrapin ...Time Initiative.” It was guided by theories of behavioral economics and behavioral design, which suggest that small changes to the context, or “choice architecture,” in which individuals make choices can enhance decision-making. Results indicate that the workshop was effective in changing the “choice architecture” in which faculty made decisions about their time-use, thereby helping them to develop new strategies for managing their time.

Summary
In this single centre study of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) patients treated on the Medical Research Council UKALL 97/99 protocols, it was determined that minimal residual ...disease (MRD) detected by real time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RQ‐PCR) and 3‐colour flow cytometry (FC) displayed high levels of qualitative concordance when evaluated at multiple time‐points during treatment (93·38%), and a combined use of both approaches allowed a multi time‐point evaluation of MRD kinetics for 90% (53/59) of the initial cohort. At diagnosis, MRD markers with sensitivity of at least 0·01% were identified by RQ‐PCR detection of fusion gene transcripts, IGH/TRG rearrangements, and FC. Using a combined RQ‐PCR and FC approach, the evaluation of 367 follow‐up BM samples revealed that the detection of MRD >1% at Day 15 (P = 0·04), >0·01% at the end of induction (P = 0·02), >0·01% at the end of consolidation (P = 0·01), >0·01% prior to the first delayed intensification (P = 0·01), and >0·1% prior to the second delayed intensification and continued maintenance (P = 0·001) were all associated with relapse and, based on early time‐points (end of induction and consolidation) a significant log‐rank trend (P = 0·0091) was noted between survival curves for patients stratified into high, intermediate and low‐risk MRD groups.
In a modern context of constrained resources and high demands, faculty exert agency to strategically navigate their careers (Baez 2000a; Neumann et al. 2006). Guided by the O'Meara et al. (2011) ...framework on agency in faculty professional lives, this study used Structural Equation Modeling to investigate which departmental factors (perceptions of tenure and promotion process, work-life climate, transparency, person-department fit, professional development resources, and collegiality) influenced faculty agentic perspective and agentic action. Results showed that faculty perceptions of certain departmental contexts do matter in faculty career agency, such as work-life climate, person-department fit, and professional development resources. These contexts have a particular influence on faculty agentic perspective. Results also showed a large effect of agentic perspective on agentic action. The study has important implications for administrators regarding departmental role in faculty agency and contributes to the growing body of literature on faculty sense of agency in academe.

Hurler syndrome is an autosomal recessive metabolic storage disease. Hematopoietic stem cell transplant increases life expectancy, but the effects on associated musculoskeletal abnormalities remains ...unclear, and long-term data are limited. We detail the follow-up of 23 patients at a mean of 8.5 years after successful hematopoietic stem cell transplant. All patients underwent clinical examination at an annual multidisciplinary clinic. Serial radiological studies were reviewed to assess development and management of hip dysplasia and genu valgum. All patients demonstrated characteristic acetabular dysplasia and failure of ossification of the superolateral femoral head. Eight patients underwent bilateral pelvic and femoral derotation (mean age at surgery, 4.4 years); 4 patients had pelvic osteotomy only. Mean preoperative acetabular angle was 34 degrees. Genu valgum of variable severity due to failure of ossification of the lateral aspect of the proximal tibial metaphysis was observed early, and 6 patients underwent medial epiphyseal stapling, decreasing tibiofemoral angle by a mean of 8 degrees. Clinically, all patients were independently mobile, with restriction of internal hip rotation being the most significant clinical finding. Valgus knees and pronated feet were a typical finding. This cohort represents one of the largest available for study, and ongoing review will clarify the progression of musculoskeletal problems and determine the effectiveness of orthopaedic intervention.
Over the last decade, many research universities have adopted policies and support mechanisms to help academic parents balance work and family. This study sought to understand what facilitates ...faculty agency in making decisions about work and family, including parental leave. We conducted 20 interviews with 5 men and 15 women at a research university that had initiated a parental-leave policy for academic parents. Factors influencing faculty sense of agency included the presence or lack of role models, departmental norms, university standards for working at home, the amount of capital that faculty felt they had acquired in departments, and parental-leave policies themselves. The relationships between faculty and students in graduate school have been found to have a significant effect on most aspects of the doctoral experience. Yet we know little about the emotional ...landscape of these relationships and what makes them work. This study, which conducted qualitative interviews in one academic department, looks inside faculty-doctoral student relationships by examining the emotional competencies that both faculty and students display within them. Emotional competencies displayed by both students and faculty were influenced by the program structure and culture of the department, and facilitated positive student and faculty outcomes. (Contains 10 tables.)
Guided by research on gendered organizations and faculty careers, we examined gender differences in how research university faculty spend their work time. We used time-diary methods to understand ...faculty work activities at a microlevel of detail, as recorded by faculty themselves over 4 weeks. We also explored workplace interactions that shape faculty workload. Similar to past studies, we found women faculty spending more time on campus service, student advising, and teaching-related activities and men spending more time on research. We also found that women received more new work requests than men and that men and women received different kinds of work requests. We consider implications for future research and the career advancement of women faculty in research universities.
