Three key questions guide this investigation into specific accusations of fakery related to some Christian religious leaders' acts in contemporary Ghana. The first question is: what do moving images ...and other popular visual forms (such as cartoons) contribute to assessments and accusations of fakery? The second question is: what can we learn from a close examination of religious leaders and their actions that citizens consider fake? The last question is: who gets to make public accusations of fakery on Ghanaian religious matters? I argue that the various analyzed cartoons and memes contribute to ongoing public discussions of the religious leaders as fake. I show how some of these religious leaders seem motivated by the need to be recognized as possessing superior supernatural powers which they exchange for material wealth. I draw attention to specific categories of Ghanaians, such as certain politicians with clout, to level accusations that these religious pastors are fakes.
The author discusses how a key Ghana-China geopolitical issue was debated in everyday life through popular visual; satirical media. Yet, current research on Africa-China media communicative practices ...on popular media and literary genres is scarce, and mostly does not pay attention to the specifics of China’s engagement with various African countries.
Sakawa indexes a cyberfraud practice in Ghana allegedly linked with occult rituals. This article examines the phenomenon as an analytically relevant example of a material understanding of religion. ...It then offers a critical reading of a popular sakawa video series and contrasts its thematic perspectives with the reactions of some Ghanaian political leaders to the possible motivations for the practice. This critical approach is conceived as a response to the persistent myopic view of such popular genres as irrelevant to key debates around problematic Ghanaian issues and also to calls in global media studies to de-Westernize the field.

Hart et al reflect on their ways of relating, supporting, and learning from one another as a starting point to consider the journal's new section, "In the Now." They differentiate their coauthorship, ...collaboration, and coproduction. They reflect critically on the limitations of traditional scholarly forms and consider more flexible, open, and accountable approaches to scholarship, drawing on their own experiences and practices.
The theoretical and empirical research on the use of communicative silence in human interaction reveals sustained scholarly interest in the topic. Yet, very little research attention has focused on ...how married couples use this phenomenon in their relationships. Thus, we have a superficial understanding of, for example, the functional uses of silence as conflict management tactic in such relationships. This paper attempts to broaden further our understanding of how participants, in a previous study, used silence to negotiate some of the conflicts that arose in their relationships. From this perspective, the paper elaborates on prior identified themes as well as discusses an additional theme that was found in the interview data. The overall aim of the paper then, is to engender interest into this domain of silence usage. Copyright Elsevier B.V.

Communication scholars' early interest in the function of silence in human interactions produces different theorizations about the phenomenon. Contemporary interest is evidenced in a plethora of ...research exploring different domains of how silence is utilized in human interaction. Despite the sustained interest in the function of silence in human communication, there is a paucity of research examining how intimate partners use silence as a conflict-management strategy. Consequently, there is an impoverished understanding on how such couples manage their marital conflicts using silence. This study thus investigates how married couples use silence as a conflict management strategy in their relationships. Using a qualitative paradigm — specifically the semiotic phenomenological perspective — and analyzing the research data through Lanigan's three-step methodology, I discover participants' experiences with silence in conflict situations with their spouses. The analysis reveals four themes that describe the experiences of married couples using silence as conflict-management tactic. Discussion of the themes reveals important findings as to how participants use silence in three ways to manage the inevitable conflicts that arise within their relationships.

Book Chapter
This chapter focuses on satirical prosumer 'testimony' responses to purported miraculous stickers in Ghana associated with Angel Daniel Obinim, a charismatic religious specialist. In doing so, the ...chapter draws attention, first, to the generation of a new formula for endless competitive parodic inventiveness. Through this discussion, I highlight how the belief in the miraculous nature of the stickers contributes to an understanding of current material approaches in studying religions. I also demonstrate how the satirical responses act as a conduit to robustly allege suspicion against Obinim's claims to supernatural powers and the problem-solving abilities of the stickers. Here, the chapter responds to recent calls within the humanities and social sciences to empirically investigate the notion of suspicion. The second key focus of the chapter takes the prosumer parodies as a serious performance that register natural desires and aspirations in Ghana.
