To identify clinical and electrophysiologic features related to IV immunoglobulin (IVIg) responsiveness in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), the authors conducted a ...multicenter study on 312 patients with CIDP (199 responders and 113 nonresponders). Muscle atrophy and decreased compound muscle action potential were pronounced in nonresponders of IVIg. Male gender, longer disease duration, and slow progression of symptoms were also associated with IVIg unresponsiveness. Features suggesting axonal dysfunction in peripheral nerves indicated IVIg unresponsiveness in CIDP.
Objective: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of removing large acoustic neurinomas (⩾3 cm) by the retrosigmoid approach. Methods: Large acoustic neurinomas (mean (SD), 4.1 (0.6) cm) were removed ...from 50 consecutive patients by the retrosigmoid suboccipital approach while monitoring the facial nerve using a facial stimulator-monitor. Excision began with the large extrameatal portion of the tumour, followed by removal of the intrameatal tumour, and then removal of the residual tumour in the extrameatal region just outside the porus acusticus. The last pieces of tumour were removed by sharp dissection from the facial nerve bidirectionally, and resected cautiously in a piecemeal fashion. Results: There were no postoperative deaths. The tumour was removed completely in 43 of 50 patients (86%). The facial nerve was anatomically preserved in 92% of the patients and 84% had excellent facial nerve function (House-Brackmann grade 1/2). One patient recovered useful hearing after tumour removal. Cerebrospinal fluid leak occurred in 4%, but there were no cases of meningitis. All but two patients (96%) had a good functional outcome. Conclusions: The method resulted in a high rate of functional facial nerve preservation, a low incidence of complications, and good functional outcomes, with no mortality and minimal morbidity. Very favourable results can be obtained using the retrosigmoid approach for the removal of large acoustic neurinomas.
Replication of DNA containing 7,8-dihydro-8-oxo-2′-deoxyguanosine (OxodG) gives rise to G → T transversions. The syn-isomer of the lesion directs misincorporation of 2′-deoxyadenosine (dA) opposite ...it. We investigated the role of the 2-amino substituent on duplex thermal stability and in replication using 7,8-dihydro-8-oxo-2′-deoxyinosine (OxodI). Oligonucleotides containing OxodI at defined sites were chemically synthesized via solid phase synthesis. Translesion incorporation opposite OxodI was compared with 7,8-dihydro-8-oxo-2′-deoxyguanosine (OxodG), 2′-deoxyinosine (dI) and 2′-deoxyguanosine (dG) in otherwise identical templates. The Klenow exo− fragment of Escherichia coli DNA polymerase I incorporated 2′-deoxyadenosine (dA) six times more frequently than 2′-deoxycytidine (dC) opposite OxodI. Preferential translesion incorporation of dA was unique to OxodI. UV-melting experiments revealed that DNA containing OxodI opposite dA is more stable than when the modified nucleotide is opposed by dC. These data suggest that while duplex DNA accommodates the 2-amino group in syn-OxodG, this substituent is thermally destabilizing and does not provide a kinetic inducement for replication by Klenow exo−.
Double electron capture is a rare nuclear decay process in which two orbital electrons are captured simultaneously in the same nucleus. Measurement of its two-neutrino mode would provide a new ...reference for the calculation of nuclear matrix elements whereas observation of its neutrinoless mode would demonstrate lepton number violation. A search for two-neutrino double electron capture on 124Xe is performed using 165.9 days of data collected with the XMASS-I liquid xenon detector. No significant excess above background was observed and we set a lower limit on the half-life as 4.7×1021 years at 90% confidence level. The obtained limit has ruled out parts of some theoretical expectations. We obtain a lower limit on the 126Xe two-neutrino double electron capture half-life of 4.3×1021 years at 90% confidence level as well.
Abstract
In theories with large extra dimensions beyond the standard 4-dimensional spacetime, axions could propagate in such extra dimensions, and acquire Kaluza–Klein (KK) excitations. These KK ...axions are produced in the Sun and could solve the unexplained heating of the solar corona. While most of the solar KK axions escape from the solar system, a small fraction are gravitationally trapped in orbits around the Sun. They would decay into 2 photons inside a terrestrial detector. The event rate is expected to modulate annually depending on the distance from the Sun. We have searched for the annual modulation signature using $832\times 359$ kg$\cdot$days of XMASS-I data. No significant event rate modulation is found, and hence we set the first experimental constraint on the KK axion–photon coupling of $4.8 \times 10^{-12}\,\mathrm{GeV}^{-1}$ at the 90$\%$ confidence level for a KK axion number density of $\bar{n}_\mathrm{a} = 4.07 \times 10^{13}\,\mathrm{m}^{-3}$, the total number of extra dimensions $n = 2$, and the number of extra dimensions $\delta = 2$ that axions can propagate in.
Abundance and grazing impacts of krill, salps and herbivorous copepods were investigated in Antarctic waters along the 140°E meridian, south of Australia, during the summers of 2002 and 2003. North ...of the Southern Boundary of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (SB-ACC), macrozooplankton comprised species of Salpa thompsoni and large herbivorous copepods, while the area south of the SB-ACC was numerically dominated by Euphausia superba or E. crystallorophias. North of the SB-ACC, the estimate of grazing impact revealed that krill, salps and copepods, Calanoides acutus, Calanus propinquus, Rhincalanus gigas and Metridia gerlachei, are able to remove a maximum of 37% of the total phytoplankton standing stock in early to midsummer, but grazing is negligible in late summer. The high grazing impact is attributed to the relatively high zooplankton abundance and low phytoplankton abundance. South of the SB-ACC, overall daily grazing impact of the three zooplankton groups was low and did not exceed 6% of the total phytoplankton standing stock throughout the investigation period. Present results indicate that the contribution of krill, salps and copepods varies seasonally as well as regionally across the SB-ACC. It seems that the carbon transport from surface to deep water by macro- and mesozooplankton in summer in this area is relatively large north of the SB-ACC but small south of the SB-ACC.
Microwave kinetic inductance detector (MKID) is one of the candidates of focal plane detector for future satellite missions such as LiteBIRD. Aluminum (Al) MKIDs with 50 nm thickness on silicon substrate and on sapphire substrate were irradiated with a proton beam of 160 MeV at the heavy ion medical accelerator in Chiba. Objective: To clarify age related changes in the clinicopathological features of hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsy (HNPP) in Japanese patients with deletion of 17p11.2, ...particularly concerning axonal abnormalities. Methods: Forty eight proband patients from 48 HNPP families were assessed as to clinical, electrophysiological, and histopathological features, including age associated changes beyond those in controls. Results: Motor conduction studies showed age associated deterioration of compound muscle action potentials in nerves vulnerable to repetitive compression (median, ulnar, and peroneal nerves), but not in others such as the tibial nerve. Sensory conduction studies revealed more profound reduction of action potentials than motor studies with little age related change. Large myelinated fibre loss was seen in the sural nerve irrespective of age at examination. Conclusions: Irreversible axonal damage may occur at entrapment sites in motor nerves in HNPP patients, progressing with aging. Sensory nerves may show more profound axonal abnormality, but without age association. The electrophysiological features of HNPP are presumed to be a mixture of abnormalities occurring from early in life and acquired features caused by repetitive insults at entrapment sites. Unlike Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A, age associated axonal damage may not occur unless the nerves are subjected to compression.
