A quantitative and qualitative analysis of the parasite fauna of the sciaenid Stellifer minor (Tschudi) from Chorrillos, Perú, was made. Some characteristics of the infectious processes, in terms of ...intensity and prevalence of infection, as a function of host sex and size, are given. Moreover, comments on the characteristics of the parasite fauna, related with host role in the marine food webs are included. The parasite fauna of Stellifer minor taken off Chorrillos, Perú, include the monogeneans Pedocotyle annakohni, Pedocotyle bravoi, Rhamnocercus sp. and Cynoscionicola sp., the digenean Helicometra fasciata, the adult acantocephalan Rhadinorhynchus sp. and the larval Corynosoma sp., the nematode Procamallanus sp., the copepods Caligus quadratus, Clavellotis dilatata and Bomolochus peruensis and one unidentified isopod of the family Cymothoidae. A distinctive characteristic of the parasite fauna (Metazoa) of S. minor is the almost absence of larval forms.
Several polypropylene–ethylene vinyl acetate (PP/EVA) copolymers with compositions ranging from 90/10 to 10/90 PP/EVA were prepared and characterized in terms of their morphology by transmission and ...scanning electron microscopy, and their mechanical properties were also studied. The results show a wide range of spatial structures which correlate well to the corresponding measurements of elastic modulus of the blends.
Four unusual invasive transitional carcinomas of the urinary bladder arose in patients aged 70 to 85 years. One or more specimens from each case were misinterpreted as benign. The features that led ...to diagnostic confusion included nests and trabeculae composed of cells with relatively bland cytologic features and small tubules, medium-sized glands, or cysts that suggested nephrogenic adenoma, cystitis glandularis, or cystitis cystica. In three cases, elongated slit-like lumens or clefts that frequently branched were also present, and several tumors had nests with pointed projections from which neoplastic cells invaded into the adjacent stroma in an often inconspicuous manner. In addition to their unusual patterns and frequent deceptive cytologic features, the tumors were noteworthy because they often had cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm. A variety of architectural features, specifically a disorderly distribution of the epithelial elements, their frequent packed arrangement, and their variation in size and shape, all spoke for a neoplastic interpretation in the current cases. Additionally, in most of these cases, small clusters of cells or individual cells of more conventional invasive carcinoma facilitated the interpretation. The results of the study of these four cases expand the spectrum of recently described peculiar features of transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder. Several of the findings in these tumors exemplify the parallels that exist between nonneoplastic epithelial abnormalities and transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder.
We report on the identification of a massive (\(\sim10^5\) M\(_\odot\)) sub-structured stellar system in the Galactic Perseus complex likely undergoing hierarchical cluster assembly. Such a system ...comprises nine star clusters (including the well-known clusters NGC 654 and NGC 663) and an extended and low-density stellar halo. Gaia-DR3 and available spectroscopic data show that all its components are physically consistent in the 6D phase-space (position, parallax, and 3D motion), homogeneous in age (14 \(-\) 44 Myr), and chemical content (half-solar metallicity). In addition, the system's global stellar density distribution is that of typical star clusters and shows clear evidence of mass segregation. We find that the hierarchical structure is mostly contracting towards the center with a speed of up to \(\simeq4-5\) km s\(^{-1}\), while the innermost regions expand at a lower rate (about \(\simeq1\) km s\(^{-1}\)) and are dominated by random motions. Interestingly, this pattern is dominated by the kinematics of massive stars, while low-mass stars (\(M<2\) M\(_\odot\)) are characterized by contraction across the entire cluster. Finally, the nine star clusters in the system are all characterized by a relatively flat velocity dispersion profile possibly resulting from ongoing interactions and tidal heating. We show that the observational results are generally consistent with those found in \(N\)-body simulations following the cluster violent relaxation phase strongly suggesting that the system is a massive cluster in the early assembly stages. This is the second structure with these properties identified in our Galaxy and, following the nomenclature of our previous work, we named it LISCA II.
A new nematode species, Philometra genypteri sp. n. (Philometridae), is described from male and female specimens found in the ovary of red cusk-eel, Genypterus chilensis (GuichenotOphidiidae, ...Ophidiiformes), from the eastern South Pacific Ocean off the coast of northern Chile. Based on light and scanning electron microscopy examination, the new species differs from most other gonad-infecting Philometra spp. in the length of spicules (126-135 µm), a gubernaculum with dorsal lamella-like structures on its distal end, and the number and arrangement of genital papillae in the male. From a few congeneric, gonad-infecting species with unknown males, it can be distinguished by some morphological and biometrical features found in gravid female (absence of caudal projections, length of first-stage larvae or oesophagus, moderately developed anterior oesophageal inflation) and by the host type (fish family) and geographical distribution. P. genypteri is the first philometrid species reported from a fish belonging to the order Ophidiiformes and the second nominal species of Philometra recorded from marine fishes of the eastern South Pacific.
ISO spectra of the supernova remnant RCW103 are presented. This object is the prototype of a SNR shock heavily interacting with dense ISM (probably a molecular cloud). The spectra are dominated by ...prominent lines and show very little continuum at λ < 40 µm suggesting that the 12 and 25 µm IRAS emission from these types of remnant could be dominated by lines rather than continuum emission from warm dust heated by the shock as generally believed. The ISO data provide for the first time a simple and reliable estimate of the gas phase abundances of Si and Fe which are found to be close to solar relative to non refractory species such as Ne, S and Ar. This indicates that the shock is very effective in destroying the ISM dust and may therefore explain the absence of warm dust behind the shock. Like the optical Nickel lines, NiII6.63 µm yields Ni/Fe abundances a factor ≥ 10 above solar which we conclude results from a large underestimation of the computed Ni+ collision strengths.PUBLICATION ABSTRACT
This work proposes control structures that efficiently combine force control with vision servo control of robot manipulators. Impedance controllers are
considered which are based both on visual ...servoing and on physical or fictitious force feedback, the force and visual information being combined in the image space. Force and visual servo controllers included in extended hybrid control structures are also considered.
The combination of both force and vision based control allows the tasks range of the robot to be extended to partially structured environments. The proposed controllers, implemented on an industrial SCARA-type robot, are tested in tasks involving physical and virtual contact with the environment.
Treatment of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) with epoietin is costly. However, cardiac morbidity associated with anemia has not been investigated in MDS. We studied this aspect in 39 patients. ...Echocardiography detected cardiac remodeling in 11 of 12 transfusion-dependent versus 13 of 27 transfusion-free patients (
P
=
0.017). Hemoglobin independently indicated cardiac hypertrophy (
P
=
0.004); each unit increase predicted a 49% reduction in the risk of remodeling confirmed by the area under the ROC curve (0.84,
P
<
0.0001). At Hb 10.7
g/dL, sensitivity was 96% and specificity 64%. Below this level quality of life was poorer. Our results suggest early treatment, to be confirmed by future trials.
