The Obama and Trump administrations have shared the same basic objectives towards Iran but have chosen radically different approaches to that end. While Obama was hailed – not least in Europe – for ...his emphasis on dialogue and negotiations, his policies still failed to contain Iran’s missile program and its use of “proxies” in other countries. The Trump administration’s emphasis on “maximum (economic) pressure”, in turn, is not per se doomed to failure. The major flaw of Trump’s approach, however, is that it is void of diplomacy. As long as the policy does not include a clearer understanding of the demands of as well as political/financial incentives towards Iran, “maximum pressure” runs the risk of dragging the United States still deeper into the Middle East’s violent conflicts.

The road map for the transition of security responsibilities from foreign to Afghan security forces was once more confirmed during the NATO summit in Chicago in May 2012. While this road map is very ...likely to be implemented on schedule, not least for domestic political reasons in ISAF-nations, the prospects for transition to become "irreversible" remain uncertain. The main external actors of the transition, most notably the US and other ISAF-countries, will not only have to engage in longer-term support for building the Afghan security sector. Even more importantly, they will have to solve those contradictions which have plagued their policies since the fall of the Taliban.

This article explores the erosion of the conditions which supported Germany's emergence as a 'Civilian Power', in particular fundamental changes in the US perspective on the transatlantic ...relationship and international security, but also the increased sensitivity of German foreign policy to domestic circumstances. It explores Germany's so far ambivalent and inconsistent role in the pursuit of a post-hegemonic order for Euro-Atlantic security, focusing in particular on the emerging European Security and Defence Policy.
In recent years, German foreign policy decision makers have employed a more "selfconfident" rhetoric, and some observers have concluded that Germany displays signs of a less-inhibited or even more ..."assertive" policy in European and international affairs. Has Germany finally left the shadow of its past behind in order to pursue its own way? Focusing on the country's recent policies towards Euro-Atlantic security institutions, military deployments and the quest for a permanent seat in the U.N. Security Council, the author concludes that evidence does not point in this direction.
