The functional properties of Caryodendron orinocense protein product were investigated and compared with those of soybean (Glycina maxima). The product protein content was 24.47 g/100 g (Nx6.25). ...Solubility increased at both sides of the isoelectric point (pH 4.0) and with increased NaCl concentration up to 0.5M. Compared with soybean flour (50% protein), the protein product exhibited higher water and oil absorption, but lower emulsifying activity, emulsion stability, foaming capacity, and foam stability, the last one increase at higher pH. Emulsifying activity, foaming capacity, and foam stability were ionic strength dependent. C. orinocense protein product increased its emulsifying activity steadily from 0.05M to 0.75M NaCl, while it remained almost constant for soybean flour. Foaming capacity increased drastically at pH 10. The minimum time and concentration to form a gel was 20% in 4 min and 10% in 8 min for the Caryodendron protein product and soybean flour, respectively. The bulk density was 0.5056+/-0.0041 g/mL.
Glutaredoxin catalyzes glutathione-dependent disulfide oxidoreduction reactions in a coupled system with NADPH, GSH and glutathione reductase and has an active site disulfide/dithiol with the ...sequence -Cys-Pro-Tyr-Cys-. Calf thymus glutaredoxin (thioltransferase), which contains two additional structural half-cystine residues, was purified to homogeneity, using a modification of the previously described isolation procedure. This method involved a pI-shift of glutaredoxin, obtained after oxidation of the fully reduced form with hydroxyethyl-disulfide, followed by CM-Sepharose chromatography. On both SDS- and IEF-gels the protein migrated as one band (M(r) 12,000). The pure protein was used to affinity-purify rabbit antiglutaredoxin antibodies obtained by immunization with the oxidized form of glutaredoxin. Using these antibodies the distribution of glutaredoxin was mapped in calf organs and tissues by Western blots and by immunohistochemistry. Glutaredoxin was demonstrated in all organs investigated. Western blots showed the presence of weak additional high molecular weight bands of unknown identity in certain organs. The immunohistochemical analyses revealed that glutaredoxin is highly expressed in a wide variety of cell types, both epithelial and mesenchymal. The distribution and occurrence in the calf organs was similar to that previously described for thioredoxin in the rat. There were some exceptions: e.g., follicular cells in the ovary did not contain immunohistochemically demonstrable glutaredoxin but expressed thioredoxin. Particularly striking were observations of strong glutaredoxin immunoreactivity in oocytes in the ovary and the pattern of glutaredoxin in epithelial tissue of the skin and tongue reflecting differential expression during cell differentiation. The distribution demonstrated that glutaredoxin serves functions apart from the originally described role as hydrogen donor for ribonucleotide reductase which only occurs in replicating cells. Such functions should relate particularly to glutathione-catalyzed protein disulfide oxidoreductions and cellular signalling by redox regulating mechanisms.

Aims. In this paper, we aim to study the main properties and luminosity function (LF) of the O II3727 emitters detected in the OTELO survey in order to characterise the star formation processes in ...low-mass galaxies at z ∼ 1.43 and to constrain the faint-end of the LF. Methods. Here, we describe the selection method and analysis of the emitters obtained from narrow-band scanning techniques. In addition, we present several relevant properties of the emitters and discuss the selection biases and uncertainties in the determination of the LF and the star formation rate density (SFRD). Results. We confirmed a total of 60 sources from a preliminary list of 332 candidates as O II3727 emitters. Approximately 93% of the emitters have masses in the range of 108 < M*/M⊙ < 109. All of our emitters are classified as late-type galaxies, with a lower value of (u − v) when compared with the rest of the emitters of the OTELO survey. We find that the cosmic variance strongly affects the normalisation (ϕ*) of the LF and explains the discrepancy of our results when compared with those obtained from surveys of much larger volumes. However, we are able to determine the faint-end slope of the LF, namely, α = −1.42 ± 0.06, by sampling the LF down to ∼1 dex lower than in previous works. We present our calculation of the SFRD of our sample and compare it to the value obtained in previous studies from the literature.
This work presents the results of using a new tool to simulate the cogeneration of water and electricity with Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) and Forward Feed Multi-Effect-Desalination (FF-MED) ...plants, by adding a new functionality to the System Advisor Model (SAM) developed by the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The controlling strategy of the MED model is presented in detail, and a case study application is shown. This study compares the results obtained with a CSP plant operating in San Diego, CA, with four different cooling systems: an MED/Seawater Cooling Circuit (SWCC), dry cooling, wet cooling, and a SWCC standalone. The results show that the usage of an MED/SWCC system in cogeneration with a CSP plant can be feasible and has the potential to be economically interesting.

Genotypic characteristics of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) in Mexico were investigated in a multicenter study that involved centers in five geographic regions of the country. Study ...samples (n = 65) collected from male patients in 1998-1999 were sequenced within the C2-V5 region of the gp120 env gene. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that subtype B predominates in Mexico. The level of interpatient nucleotide diversity (mean value of 8.9%) was congruent with multiple introductions of the virus and the "aging" epidemic in Mexico. One-third of samples (30.8% of cases) showed polymorphism within the crown of the V3 loop demonstrating non-GPGR motifs. Two new motifs in the V3 loop crown - HPGG and GPEG - were observed. The evolution of the AIDS epidemic in Mexico should be closely monitored since non-B HIV-1 subtypes might be introduced.
