Renewable energy resources are becoming the dominating element in power systems. Along with de-carbonization, they transform power systems into a more distributed, autonomous, bottom-up style one. We ...speak of Smart Grid and Microgrid when distributed energy resources take over. While being a means to improve technical and financial efficiency, planning, operations, and carbon footprint, it is these new technologies that also introduce new challenges. Reliability is one of them, deserving a new way of describing and assessing system and component reliability. This paper introduces a new reliability framework that covers these new elements in modern power systems. It can be seen that reliability assessment of modern power systems also requires introducing local reliability concepts as well as incorporating different electro-magnetic/mechanical stability issues.
Recent developments in the electricity sector encourage a high penetration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES). In addition, European policies are pushing for mass deployment of Electric Vehicles ...(EVs). Due to their non-controllable characteristics, these loads have brought new challenges in distribution networks, resulting in increased difficulty for Distribution System Operators (DSOs) to guarantee a safe and reliable operation of the grid. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) are promising solutions for mitigating the impact of the new loads and RES. In this paper, different aspects of the BESS's integration in distribution grids are reviewed. At first, the physical layer will be considered, focusing on the main battery technologies commercially available and on the power electronics converter. Secondly, the different functionalities that a grid-connected BESS can provide will be investigated, and then its sizing, location and control in distribution network will be discussed. In addition, an overview of actual BESSs installations is given. All in all, this paper aims at providing a comprehensive view of BESSs integration in distribution grids, highlighting the main focus, challenges, and research gaps for each one of these aspects.
Power systems are moving towards hybrid AC/DC grids with the integration of HVDC links, renewable resources and energy storage modules. The load frequency control (LFC) of tomorrow has to consider ...the complex interactions between these components. Meanwhile, more attention should be paid to cyber security concerns as the LFC loop highly depends on data communications which may be exposed to cyber attacks. In this regard, this article aims to analyze the false data injection (FDI) attacks on the AC/DC interconnected LFC system with inertia emulation and develop advanced diagnosis tools to reveal their occurrence. We build an optimization-based framework for the purpose of vulnerability analysis. Considering the attack impact on frequency stability, it is shown that the multi-area LFC system with parallel AC/DC links and emulated inertia by storage devices is more vulnerable to FDI attacks, compared to the one without inertia emulation and the normal AC system. We then propose a detection approach to detect and isolate each FDI intrusion with a sufficient fast response, and even recover the attack value. In addition to theoretical results, the effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through simulations on the two-area AC/DC interconnected LFC system with inertia emulation capabilities.
The high penetration of renewable energy resources and power electronic-based components has led to a low-inertia power grid which would bring challenges to system operations. The new model of load ...frequency control (LFC) must be able to handle the modern scenario where controlled areas are interconnected by parallel AC/HVDC links and storage devices are added to provide virtual inertia. Notably, vulnerabilities within the communication channels for wide-area data exchange in LFC loops may make them exposed to various cyber attacks, while it still remains largely unexplored how the new LFC in the AC/HVDC interconnected system with emulated inertia would be affected under malicious intrusions. Thus, in this article, we are motivated to explore possible effects of the major types of data availability and integrity attacks—Denial of Service (DoS) and false data injection (FDI) attacks—on such a new LFC system. By using a system-theoretic approach, we explore the optimal strategies that attackers can exploit to launch DoS or FDI attacks to corrupt the system stability. Besides, a comparison study is performed to learn the impact of these two types of attacks on LFC models of power systems with or without HVDC link and emulated inertia. The simulation results on the the exemplary two-area system illustrate that both DoS and FDI attacks can cause large frequency deviations or even make the system unstable; moreover, the LFC system with AC/HVDC interconnections and emulated inertia could be more vulnerable to these two types of attacks in many adversarial scenarios.
The power system is in change, and the most fundamental changes are happening in the distribution grid. Formerly passive consumers get active and smart, storage and distributed generation appears, ...and the "grid edge" is upgraded with Intenet of Things (IoT). Gone are the days where distribution infrastructure consisted of passive assets, dimensioned for the worst case of load. We are now entering a new phase where active distribution grids are operated with the help of local markets, machine learning techniques, and distribution automation. Integrating renewable energy or electric vehicles and electrifying the last remaining fossil applications require a flexible and powerful active distribution grid.
The extensive integration of distributed renewable energy resources (DRES) can lead to several issues in power grids, particularly in distribution grids, due to their inherent intermittency. This ...paper presents a stochastic simulation-based approach to estimate the maximum permissible penetration level of DRES and to determine the optimal capacity of centralized battery energy storage systems (BESS) in distribution networks while adhering to technical constraints. The stochastic method creates a wide range of scenarios under various conditions. For each scenario, our proposed approach calculates the maximum allowable penetration level of DRES and the required BESS capacity with different DRES control logics. The maximum allowable penetration level of DRES and the requirements of the BESS capacity are determined by an analysis of various simulation results. This paper’s unique contribution lies in equipping distribution system operators (DSOs) with the ability to compare results and select the most appropriate voltage control and power smoothing methods. This aids in mitigating challenges associated with overvoltage and intermittency issues arising from DRES-generated power, thereby enhancing the overall resilience and reliability of the power grid. Case studies that include four voltage control algorithms and three power smoothing methods demonstrate the universality and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

In this manuscript we explore European feature importance in Day Ahead Market (DAM) price forecasting models, and show that model performance can deteriorate when too many features are included due ...to over-fitting. We propose a greedy algorithm to search over candidate countries for European features to be used in a DAM price forecasting model, that can be applied to several regression and machine learning modelling methodologies. We apply the algorithm to build price forecasting models for the Dutch market, using candidate countries selected through an integrated analysis based on open-source European electricity market data. Feature importance is visualised using an Auto Regressive and Random Forest model. We explain these results using cross-border flow and DAM price data. Two types of models (LEAR and the Deep Neural Network) are considered for the DAM price forecasting with and without European features. We show that in the Dutch case, taking European market integration into account improves the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of the best performing DAM price forecasting model by 3.1%, the relative MAE (rMAE) by 3.85%, and the Symmetrical Mean Absolute Percentage Error (sMAPE) by 0.31 p.p., compared to the best forecasting model without European features. Through statistical testing we show that European features improve the accuracy of the forecasts with statistical significance.
Power electronic converters will serve as the fundamental components of modern power systems. However, they may suffer from poorer reliability if not properly designed, consequently affecting the ...overall performance of power systems. Accordingly, the converter reliability should be taken into account in design and planning of Power Electronic-based Power Systems (PEPSs). Optimal decision-making in planning of PEPSs requires precise reliability modeling in converters from component up to system-level. This paper proposes model-based system-level design and maintenance strategies in PEPSs based on the reliability model of converters. This will yield a reliable and economic planning of PEPSs by proper sizing of converters, cost-effective design of converter components, identifying and strengthening the converter weakest links, as well as optimal maintenance scheduling of converters. Numerical case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design and planning strategies for modern power systems.
Due to their weak nature, such as low inertia, offshore energy hubs are prone to unprecedented fast dynamic phenomena. This can lead to undesired instability problems. Recent literature, with main ...focus on onshore systems, suggests that electrolysers could be an attractive option to support wind generators in the mitigation of balancing problems. This paper presents an Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) model for real-time simulation based study of the dynamics of active power and voltage responses of offshore hubs due to wind speed fluctuations. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the ability of an electrolyser to support an offshore energy hub under different scenarios and with different locations of the electrolyser. Two locations of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysers were considered: centralised (at the AC common bus of the hub) or distributed (at the DC link of the wind turbines). Numerical simulations conducted in RSCAD® on a 2 GW offshore hub with 4 × 500 MW wind power plants and 330 or 600 MW PEM electrolysers show that electrolysers can effectively support the mitigation of sudden wind speed variations, irrespective of the location. The distributed location of electrolysers can be beneficial to prevent large spillage of wind power generation during the isolation of faults within the hub.
