Concepts of non-volatile memory to replace conventional flash memory have suffered from low material reliability and high off-state current, and the use of a thick, rigid blocking oxide layer in ...flash memory further restricts vertical scale-up. Here, we report a two-terminal floating gate memory, tunnelling random access memory fabricated by a monolayer MoS2/h-BN/monolayer graphene vertical stack. Our device uses a two-terminal electrode for current flow in the MoS2 channel and simultaneously for charging and discharging the graphene floating gate through the h-BN tunnelling barrier. By effective charge tunnelling through crystalline h-BN layer and storing charges in graphene layer, our memory device demonstrates an ultimately low off-state current of 10(-14) A, leading to ultrahigh on/off ratio over 10(9), about ∼10(3) times higher than other two-terminal memories. Furthermore, the absence of thick, rigid blocking oxides enables high stretchability (>19%) which is useful for soft electronics.
Liquid metal is being regarded as a promising material for soft electronics owing to its distinct combination of high electrical conductivity comparable to that of metals and exceptional ...deformability derived from its liquid state. However, the applicability of liquid metal is still limited due to the difficulty in simultaneously achieving its mechanical stability and initial conductivity. Furthermore, reliable and rapid patterning of stable liquid metal directly on various soft substrates at high-resolution remains a formidable challenge. In this work, meniscus-guided printing of ink containing polyelectrolyte-attached liquid metal microgranular-particle in an aqueous solvent to generate semi-solid-state liquid metal is presented. Liquid metal microgranular-particle printed in the evaporative regime is mechanically stable, initially conductive, and patternable down to 50 μm on various substrates. Demonstrations of the ultrastretchable (~500% strain) electrical circuit, customized e-skin, and zero-waste ECG sensor validate the simplicity, versatility, and reliability of this manufacturing strategy, enabling broad utility in the development of advanced soft electronics.

species and described their dynamic IDTs between their nuclear and mitochondrial genomes, or plastid and mitochondrial genomes (plastome and mitogenome).
We identified the putative functional transfers of the mitochondrial genes
and
to the nucleus in both
species and detected two transcripts for the
and
genes. Additional transcriptomes from the Apicaceae species also provided evidence for the transfers and duplications of these mitochondrial genes, showing lineage-specific patterns. Intrageneric variations of the IDT were found between the
organelle genomes. Recurrent plastid-to-mitochondrion DNA transfer events were only identified in the
mitogenome, and a pair of mitochondrial DNAs of plastid origin (MIPTs) may generate minor alternative isoforms. We only found a mitochondrion-to-plastid DNA transfer event in the
. This event may be linked to inverted repeat boundary shifts in its plastome. We inferred that the insertion region involved an MIPT that had already acquired a plastid sequence in its mitogenome via IDT. We propose that the MIPT acts as a homologous region pairing between the donor and recipient sequences. Our results provide insight into the evolution of organelle genomes across the family Apiaceae.
Caprifoliaceae s.l. plastid genomes (plastomes) show that one inversion and two inverted repeat boundary shifts occurred in the common ancestor of this family, after which the plastomes are generally ...conserved. This study reports plastome sequences of five additional species, Fedia cornucopiae, Valeriana fauriei, and Valerianella locusta from the subfamily Valerianoideae, as well as Dipsacus japonicus and Scabiosa comosa from the subfamily Dipsacoideae. Combined with the published plastomes, these plastomes provide new insights into the structural evolution of plastomes within the family. Moreover, the three plastomes from the subfamily Valerianoideae exhibited accelerated nucleotide substitution rates, particularly at synonymous sites, across the family. The patterns of accD sequence divergence in the family are dynamic with structural changes, including interruption of the conserved domain and increases in nonsynonymous substitution rates. In particular, the Valeriana accD gene harbors a large insertion of amino acid repeat (AAR) motifs, and intraspecific polymorphism with a variable number of AARs in the Valeriana accD gene was detected. We found a correlation between intron losses and increased ratios of nonsynonymous to synonymous substitution rates in the clpP gene with intensified positive selection. In addition, two Dipsacoideae plastomes revealed the loss of the plastid-encoded rps15, and a potential functional gene transfer to the nucleus was confirmed.
Guided by gut sensory cues, humans and animals prefer nutritive sugars over non-caloric sweeteners, but how the gut steers such preferences remains unknown. In the intestine, neuropod cells synapse ...with vagal neurons to convey sugar stimuli to the brain within seconds. Here, we found that cholecystokinin (CCK)-labeled duodenal neuropod cells differentiate and transduce luminal stimuli from sweeteners and sugars to the vagus nerve using sweet taste receptors and sodium glucose transporters. The two stimulus types elicited distinct neural pathways: while sweetener stimulated purinergic neurotransmission, sugar stimulated glutamatergic neurotransmission. To probe the contribution of these cells to behavior, we developed optogenetics for the gut lumen by engineering a flexible fiberoptic. We showed that preference for sugar over sweetener in mice depends on neuropod cell glutamatergic signaling. By swiftly discerning the precise identity of nutrient stimuli, gut neuropod cells serve as the entry point to guide nutritive choices.
Alzheimer's disease affects profoundly the quality of human behavior and cognition. The very broad distribution of its severity across various human subjects requires the quantitative diagnose of ...Alzheimer's disease beyond the conventional tripartite classification of cohorts such as cognitively normal (CN), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), Alzheimer's disease (AD). The unfolding of such broad distributions by the quantitative and continuous degree of AD severity is necessary for the precise diagnose in the cross-sectional study of different stages in AD. We conducted the massive reanalysis on MRI images of 761 human brains based on the accumulated bigdata of Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative. The score matrix of cortical thickness profile at cortex points of subjects was constructed by statistically learning the cortical thickness data of 761 human brains. We also developed a new and simple algebraic predictor which provides the quantitative and continuous degree of AD severity of subjects along the scale from 0 for fully CN to 1 for fully AD state. The mathematical measure of a new predictor for the degree of AD severity is presented based on a covariance correlation matrix of cortical thickness profile between human subjects. One can remove the uncertainty in the determination of different stages in AD by the quantitative degree of AD severity and thus go far beyond the tripartite classification of cohorts. We unfold the nature of broad distribution of AD severity of subjects even within a given cohort by the scale from 0 for fully CN to 1 for fully AD state. The quantitative and continuous degree of AD severity developed in this study would be a good practical measure for diagnosing the different stages in AD severity.

With the recent advancements in nanotechnology, much attention is being given at applying nanomaterials to address the limitations of the current available techniques in the field of biomedical science including neuromodulation. This mini-review aims to introduce the current state-of-the-art stimuli-responsive nanomaterials used for assisting thermally induced neuromodulation.
Neural interfaces have enabled significant advancements in neuroscience and paved the way for clinical applications in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of neurological disorders. A variety of ...device modalities, such as electrical, chemical and optical neural interfacing, are required for the comprehensive monitoring and modulation of neural activity. The development of recent devices with multimodal functionalities has been driven by innovations in materials engineering, especially the utilization of organic soft materials such as polymers, carbon allotropes, and hydrogels. A transition from rigid to soft materials has improved device performance through enhanced biocompatibility and flexibility to realize stable long-term performance. This article provides a comprehensive review of a variety of neural probes ranging from surface-type and implantable electrodes to fiber-based devices. We also highlight the influence of materials on the development of these neural interfaces and their effects on device performance and lifetime.
Flexible and stretchable optoelectronic devices can be potentially applied in displays, biosensors, biomedicine, robotics, and energy generation. The use of nanomaterials with superior optical ...properties such as quantum dots (QDs) is important in the realization of wearable displays and biomedical devices, but specific structural design as well as selection of materials should preferentially accompany this technology to realize stretchable forms of these devices. Here, we report stretchable optoelectronic sensors manufactured using colloidal QDs and integrated with elastomeric substrates, whose optoelectronic properties are stable under various deformations. A graphene electrode is adopted to ensure extreme bendability of the devices. Ultrathin QD light-emitting diodes and QD photodetectors are transfer-printed onto a prestrained elastomeric layout to form wavy configurations with regular patterns. The layout is mechanically stretchable until the structure is converted to a flat configuration. The emissive and active area itself can be stretched or compressed by buckled structures, which are applicable to wearable electronic devices. We demonstrate that these stretchable optoelectronic sensors can be used for continuous monitoring of blood waves via photoplethysmography signal recording. These and related systems create important and unconventional opportunities for stretchable and foldable optoelectronic devices with health-monitoring capability and, thus, meet the demand for wearable and body-integrated electronics.
