The Cosmic Ray Cube is a portable tracking device conceived for outreach activities allowing a direct scientific experience for secondary school students. In the context of the PTOLEMY project, the ...detector was used to measure the differential muon flux inside the bunker of Monte Soratte, a suitable location at about 50 km north of Rome (Italy). Its simple operation was crucial to finalise the measurements, carried out during the Covid-19 lockdown in a site devoid of scientific equipment. The fine scanning of the differential muon rate highlights the details of the mountain above the bunker providing a map of the thickness of the rock which surrounds the detector. The result shows a muon flux at the Soratte hypogeum of about two orders of magnitude lower than the one observed on the surface.
The Geant4 Simulation Toolkit provides an ample set of physics models describing electromagnetic interactions of particles with matter. This paper presents the results of a series of comparisons for ...the evaluation of Geant4 electromagnetic processes with respect to United States National Institute of Standards and Technologies (NIST) reference data. A statistical analysis was performed to estimate quantitatively the compatibility of Geant4 electromagnetic models with NIST data; the statistical analysis also highlighted the respective strengths of the different Geant4 models.

Statistical methods play a significant role throughout the life-cycle of physics experiments, being an essential component of physics analysis. The present project in progress aims to develop an ...object-oriented software Toolkit for statistical data analysis. The Toolkit contains a variety of Goodness-of-Fit (GoF) tests, from Chi-squared to Kolmogorov-Smirnov, to less known, but generally much more powerful tests such as Anderson-Darling, Goodman, Fisz-Cramer-von Mises, Kuiper. Thanks to the component-based design and the usage of the standard abstract interfaces for data analysis, this tool can be used by other data analysis systems or integrated in experimental software frameworks. In this paper we describe the statistical details of the algorithms and the computational features of the Toolkit. With the aim of showing the consistency between the code and the mathematical features of the algorithms, we describe the results we obtained reproducing by means of the Toolkit a couple of Goodness-of-Fit testing examples of relevance in statistics literature.

The XENON1T experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) is the first WIMP dark matter detector operating with a liquid xenon target mass above the ton-scale. Out of its 3.2 t liquid ...xenon inventory, 2.0 t constitute the active target of the dual-phase time projection chamber. The scintillation and ionization signals from particle interactions are detected with low-background photomultipliers. This article describes the XENON1T instrument and its subsystems as well as strategies to achieve an unprecedented low background level. First results on the detector response and the performance of the subsystems are also presented.

The Geant4 simulation toolkit includes a specialised package, implementing a precise treatment of electromagnetic interactions of particles with matter below 1 keV. The Geant4 low energy ...electromagnetic package provides a variety of models describing the electromagnetic processes of electrons and positrons, photons, charged hadrons and ions, taking into account detailed features, such as atomic shell effects and charge dependence. Those features are relevant to several experimental domains, such as astrophysics, space science and bio-medical research, and have enabled new simulation studies beyond the conventional applications of Geant4 in high energy physics. The design of the package and the physics models implemented are presented.
A series of 8 dyes was prepared and used to dye nylon 6 and nylon 6,6. The interactions between dyes and methyl-β-cyclodextrin were studied by solubility isotherms, TGA and DTA analysis.
...Methyl-β-cyclodextrin was examined as low environmental impact additive in dyeing processes. Methyl-β-cyclodextrin showed good levelling properties on the dyeing of polyamide fibres. This effect can be due to the formation of complexes between methyl-β-cyclodextrin and dyes.
We discuss the consequences of the quantum uncertainty on the spectrum of the electron emitted by the beta-processes of a tritium atom bound to a graphene sheet. We analyze quantitatively the issue ...recently raised by Cheipesh, Cheianov, and Boyarsky Phys. Rev. D 104, 116004 (2021), and discuss the relevant timescales and the degrees of freedom that can contribute to the intrinsic spread in the electron energy. We perform careful calculations of the potential between tritium and graphene with different coverages and geometries. With this at hand, we propose possible avenues to mitigate the effect of the quantum uncertainty.
