The paper presents and compares various unicast nonblocking architectures to be used into space-domain photonic switching networks. All the analyzed architectures have been evaluated and compared ...considering a possible physical implementation based on guided-wave structures realized with integrated optics technology. Some properties including number of switching elements required, blocking performance, number of waveguide crossovers, system attenuation, and signal-to-noise ratio are evaluated and analyzed. The main purpose of this work is to review the state-of-the-art of optical guided-wave space-switching architectures and to provide a relevant set of technical elements useful in the selection of architectures to be used in all-optical cross-connect implementation.
This paper presents a novel implementation scheme of the Benes network based on the 2-D MEMS technology. A recursive design procedure is proposed defining the switch geometry for any optical ...port-count. An analytical approach is adopted to provide a scalability evaluation of the architecture based upon basic parameters such as number of mirrors, substrate area, longest optical path and highest number of reflections
National Research and Education Networks (NERNs) are investigating the option to migrate their infrastructure from IP over static transport network to IP over control- plane based transport network, ...possibly deploying GMPLS or ASON technology. In the NREN-participated MUPBED project, quality of provisioning of bandwidth on-demand services has been studied. In this paper the main results are presented showing that without an automatic control-plane, connection provisioning is impaired by setup and release delays. In managed- networks, performance under dynamic traffic may be severely limited if an insufficient number of operators are active in the network operations center. The relation between number of operators and network performance is proved by theoretical models and simulations. The reduction of network-configuration workload achievable by an ASON/GMPLS control plane may be an important motivation for NRENs because of their specific operational expenditure model.

The exploitation of photonic technology through application of switching principles and system concepts in switch implementation, i.e. photonics in switching, is a very challenging topic in the field ...of optical networking research. Many European research teams have been involved in high quality studies and trials in this field since several years and obtained funding opportunities for joining their expertise within the e-photon/One+ Network of Excellence. This talk aims at presenting how collaborations on photonics in switching research has been organized within e-Photon/One+ and which actions have been finalized for exploitation and dissemination of this knowledge in science and education. The paper will report a description of research contributions from different partners involved in photonics in switching research.

The deep changes undergone by network traffic have strongly impacted its statistical characterization. The traditional assumptions on traffic characteristics have been proven to be obsolete and a new ...formalism has been brought about to properly take into account traffic new properties. Accordingly, newly designed analysis tools have been proposed. Our work is focused on the presentation and the test of these tools of analysis, believing that we have first of all to be confident on the methods used to properly characterize network traffic.
We consider the problem of cooperative distributed routing optimization in multi-domain/multi-provider networks. The main object of our investigation are ASON/G-MPLS transport networks, still the ...results of our investigations could be extended to any multi-domain network where particular domains have limited mutual visibility of intra-domain resources. This paper refines a distributed decomposition mechanism for reliable cooperative optimization of flow reservation levels introduced, by considering the fundamental issue of fair income distribution. The proposed idea of fair income distribution mechanism has been adopted from the theory of cooperative games (Shapley value). We show the benefits of adopting the proposed income distribution scheme by numerical simulations.
The paper provides an overview of the resilient schemes currently adopted in network architectures based on IP over Automatically Switched Optical Networks (ASONs)/Generalized Multiprotocol Label ...Switching (GMPLS) based optical networks, namely the Optical Internet. In addition it outlooks the raising challenges and possible solutions in implementing advanced resilient schemes capable of satisfying the requirements of the different applications carried by a single multi-layer network infrastructure.
