A condition referred to as slimmer’s paralysis or peroneal nerve neuropathy can occur in patients following a rapid and significant weight reduction. This case study focuses on the presentation of a ...49-year-old female who suffered from unilateral foot drop after an extreme weight loss over 6 months while taking a GLP-1 receptor agonist for obesity management. On the basis of history, physical examination, and diagnostic testing, she was diagnosed and treated conservatively for peroneal nerve compression related to the weight reduction and crossing of legs due to the loss of the fat pad surrounding the fibular nerve.
•Slimmer’s paralysis, or peroneal neuropathy, is a mononeuropathy of the lower extremities resulting in foot drop, which can occur following rapid and significant weight loss.•Delay of diagnosis and treatment can result in permanent damage of the peroneal nerve.•Treatment is either conservative or surgical depending on the location and severity of peroneal nerve involvement.•The increased use of weight loss medications, bariatric surgery, and other extreme diet trends may lead to an increased incidence of peroneal nerve injury.•Providers should recognize peroneal nerve injury as a possible cause when unilateral foot drop is seen in a patient.

This is a case study about a 41-year-old female patient who had suffered for 3 years with recurring rashes and progressive joint pain. She had been diagnosed with a variety of diagnoses by other ...providers including fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, reactive arthritis, fungal infections, and atopic dermatitis. Through the careful and thorough gathering of the patient’s history, a comprehensive physical examination, and diagnostic testing, this patient was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis, a progressive, chronic, autoimmune inflammatory disease that is associated with psoriasis. Early diagnosis is important in preventing negative health outcomes that can result in permanent deformity and damage to the joints.
•Psoriatic arthritis is a progressive, chronic, autoimmune inflammatory disease that is associated with psoriasis.•Psoriatic arthritis has multiple other systemic manifestations including nail disease, spondylitis, dactylitis, enthesitis, uveitis, mood changes, pitting edema, and cardiac and metabolic manifestations.•There is no definitive or distinct cause of psoriatic arthritis, although there is a familial predisposition if a first-degree relative has the disease, and there is evidence to suggest that environmental factors such as trauma, obesity, and smoking could be possible triggers for the development of psoriatic arthritis.•Early diagnosis is important in preventing negative health outcomes, which can result in permanent deformity and damage to the joints.•The consequences of delayed diagnosis or wrong diagnosis can negatively impact a patient’s quality of life and be a significant contributor to comorbidities associated with cardiovascular, psychological, and metabolic conditions.
Recent statistics show an increasing trend of electronic cigarette usage among adolescents. Despite common misconceptions, electronic cigarette use does not reduce cigarette use among adolescents and ...can potentially increase cigarette dependence via nicotine addiction and modeling of smoking behaviors. Pediatric nurses and health care providers should be aware of the popularity and safety concerns of electronic cigarettes so that they can properly provide education regarding the possible negative health effects of adolescent electronic cigarette use, raise awareness of this public health concern, and impact policies in their communities.
•Electronic cigarettes contain nicotine and other potentially harmful ingredients.•Electronic cigarette usage does not result in decreased usage of conventional cigarettes among adolescents.•Electronic cigarettes are not currently regulated by the FDA and are not subject to tobacco laws.

School nurses play a crucial role in injury prevention and initial treatment when injuries occur at school. The role of school nurses includes being knowledgeable about the management of head ...injuries, including assessment and initial treatment. The school nurse must be familiar with the outcomes of a head injury and know when further evaluation is indicated. Developing a head injury protocol in the school setting is one strategy to make sure that all involved are able to consistently and effectively respond to a head injury and prevent a possible negative outcome. The combination of a protocol, nursing judgment, and best practices can ensure that all means are used to take care of children when a head injury is sustained. These strategies will help to increase the safety of children at school. A systematic approach to the management of these types of injuries is essential for preventing possible complications.

Falls from height have long represented a large number of workplace fatalities. Despite the decrease in the overall number of fall events, fatalities due to falls have increased. A comprehensive fall ...protection program consists of more than preventing falls; it must also incorporate rescue plans. This article addresses the special considerations that must be addressed when planning for rescue from extreme height. The authors share insight gleaned from their work in a special scenario that involved work performed at extreme height. PUBLICATION ABSTRACT

Industrial settings have many haz-ards and present a challenge to those charged with protecting workers to provide practical solutions for safety and health. In early 2007, a contract res-cue company ...was asked to help deliver high-angle rope rescue services for a specialty company that provides coating services to many industries, including the electric power sector. The company had been contracted to apply specialized coatings to the inside of new power plant chimney flues for an energy company located in the Midwest. The energy company was building several new flue gas desulfurization (FGD) units in several of its powerhouses. FGD is an absorption process used as a means to control sulfur dioxide in flue gas from fossil-fuel power plants. The Clean Air Act includes provisions for sulfur dioxide emission control that caused the energy company to address its FGD units. The stacks or chimneys on FGDs in this case range in height, with many taller than 500 ft and challenged the coatings contractor to provide competent rescue and fall protection options.
Nursing is a team sport, and medical errors occur when members of the team fail to collaborate. The purpose of this project was to develop team leadership skills in entry-level nursing students ...through the integration of team-focused activities in the classroom. The instructor's or coach's role was to facilitate group activities that encourage communication, delegation, leadership, and adaptability. The result was development of core competencies related to teamwork for students to use as an RN.
Associate degree nursing (ADN) programs are faced with the challenge of developing nursing students' critical thinking abilities and skills proficiency. This article discusses the potential role of ...podcasts as an innovative teaching strategy for nursing professors to implement principles of adult learning while developing the critical thinking skills of ADN students.
