The effect of thymopentin treatment was investigated in immunocompromised elderly subjects. Thymopentin was able to increase IL-2 production and IL-2 receptor expression, as assessed on PHA-activated ...blasts by percentage of Tac-positive cells and response to exogenous IL-2. After treatment, an increased precursor frequency, estimated by limiting dilution analysis, of PHA-responding lymphocytes was observed in two out of six subjects tested. In vitro experiments with thymopentin show that the drug was able to enhance blastogenesis by PHA of elderly lymphocytes but not of adult cells. These results indicate that (a) the increased IL-2 synthesis/IL-2 receptor expression may be the crucial mechanism of the immunopotentiating activity of the drug in elderly subjects and (b) an increased intrinsic T-cell responsiveness seems to be responsible for this immunopotentiating activity, although an increase in the size of the responsive T-cell pool could not be excluded.
An asynchronous version of a binary pixel readabout circuit has been implemented in an array with 16 columns at 500 mu m pitch and 63 rows at 75 mu m pitch. This readabout chip has been bonded with ...solder bumps to a silicon detector with matching pixel elements. Event information in a pixel can be strobed into a local memory by a trigger signal and subsequently read out. Without a strobe the information is continuously cleared. The complete hybrid detector has been successfully tested with ionizing particles from a radioactive source. Three such devices have been put in the CERN heavy-ion experiment WA94 in the Omega spectrometer, where they recorded particle tracks from high-multiplicity /sup 32/S interactions. Preliminary data indicate a noise of approximately 60 e/sup -/ and a threshold spread of approximately 500 e/sup -/. The timing characteristics are adequate for a fixed-target experiment.< >

Haemofiltration at its best is able to give excellent clearances of solutes in a wide molecular weight range, but the need of large amounts of reliable substitution fluid makes this technique too ...expensive for more widespread application. In order to give an 'adequate' treatment by a safe, well tolerated, effective and comparatively cheaper method, haemofiltration without substitution fluid (HWSF) has been carried out. This method, consisting of the regeneration of appropriate amounts of pure convected plasma water by highly permeable, high surface area dialysis membranes, has been utilised for several months in four patients, with encouraging clinical results.
