u
,
v
)-coverage of the EHT can contain regions of time over the course of a single observation that facilitate dynamical imaging. These optimal time regions typically have projected baseline distributions that are approximately angularly isotropic and radially homogeneous. We derive a metric of coverage quality based on baseline isotropy and density that is capable of ranking array configurations by their ability to produce accurate dynamical reconstructions. We compare this metric to existing metrics in the literature and investigate their utility by performing dynamical reconstructions on synthetic data from simulated EHT observations of sources with simple orbital variability. We then use these results to make recommendations for imaging the 2017 EHT Sgr A* data set.
Abstract
Interpretation of resolved polarized images of black holes by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) requires predictions of the polarized emission observable by an Earth-based instrument for a ...particular model of the black hole accretion system. Such predictions are generated by general relativistic radiative transfer (GRRT) codes, which integrate the equations of polarized radiative transfer in curved spacetime. A selection of ray-tracing GRRT codes used within the EHT Collaboration is evaluated for accuracy and consistency in producing a selection of test images, demonstrating that the various methods and implementations of radiative transfer calculations are highly consistent. When imaging an analytic accretion model, we find that all codes produce images similar within a pixel-wise normalized mean squared error (NMSE) of 0.012 in the worst case. When imaging a snapshot from a cell-based magnetohydrodynamic simulation, we find all test images to be similar within NMSEs of 0.02, 0.04, 0.04, and 0.12 in Stokes

, respectively. We additionally find the values of several image metrics relevant to published EHT results to be in agreement to much better precision than measurement uncertainties.
Abstract
In 2017 the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observed the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), at a frequency of 228.1 GHz (
λ
= 1.3 mm). The ...fundamental physics tests that even a single pulsar orbiting Sgr A* would enable motivate searching for pulsars in EHT data sets. The high observing frequency means that pulsars—which typically exhibit steep emission spectra—are expected to be very faint. However, it also negates pulse scattering, an effect that could hinder pulsar detections in the Galactic center. Additionally, magnetars or a secondary inverse Compton emission could be stronger at millimeter wavelengths than at lower frequencies. We present a search for pulsars close to Sgr A* using the data from the three most sensitive stations in the EHT 2017 campaign: the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, the Large Millimeter Telescope, and the IRAM 30 m Telescope. We apply three detection methods based on Fourier-domain analysis, the fast folding algorithm, and single-pulse searches targeting both pulsars and burst-like transient emission. We use the simultaneity of the observations to confirm potential candidates. No new pulsars or significant bursts were found. Being the first pulsar search ever carried out at such high radio frequencies, we detail our analysis methods and give a detailed estimation of the sensitivity of the search. We conclude that the EHT 2017 observations are only sensitive to a small fraction (≲2.2%) of the pulsars that may exist close to Sgr A*, motivating further searches for fainter pulsars in the region.
Abstract
The black hole images obtained with the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) are expected to be variable at the dynamical timescale near their horizons. For the black hole at the center of the M87 ...galaxy, this timescale (5–61 days) is comparable to the 6 day extent of the 2017 EHT observations. Closure phases along baseline triangles are robust interferometric observables that are sensitive to the expected structural changes of the images but are free of station-based atmospheric and instrumental errors. We explored the day-to-day variability in closure-phase measurements on all six linearly independent nontrivial baseline triangles that can be formed from the 2017 observations. We showed that three triangles exhibit very low day-to-day variability, with a dispersion of ∼3°–5°. The only triangles that exhibit substantially higher variability (∼90°–180°) are the ones with baselines that cross the visibility amplitude minima on the
u
–
v
plane, as expected from theoretical modeling. We used two sets of general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations to explore the dependence of the predicted variability on various black hole and accretion-flow parameters. We found that changing the magnetic field configuration, electron temperature model, or black hole spin has a marginal effect on the model consistency with the observed level of variability. On the other hand, the most discriminating image characteristic of models is the fractional width of the bright ring of emission. Models that best reproduce the observed small level of variability are characterized by thin ring-like images with structures dominated by gravitational lensing effects and thus least affected by turbulence in the accreting plasmas.
Observations with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer in the most extended configuration toward two intermediate-mass star-forming regions, IRAS 22198+6336 and AFGL 5142, reveal the presence of ...several complex organic molecules at {approx}500 AU scales, confirming the presence of hot cores in both regions. The hot cores are not rich in CN-bearing molecules, as often seen in massive hot cores, and are mainly traced by CH{sub 3}CH{sub 2}OH, (CH{sub 2}OH){sub 2}, CH{sub 3}COCH{sub 3}, and CH{sub 3}OH, with, additionally, CH{sub 3}CHO, CH{sub 3}OD, and HCOOD for IRAS 22198+6336, and C{sub 6}H and O{sup 13}CS for AFGL 5142. The emission of complex molecules is resolved down to sizes of {approx}300 and {approx}600 AU, for IRAS 22198+6336 and AFGL 5142, respectively, and most likely is tracing protostellar disks rather than flattened envelopes or toroids as is usually found. This is especially clear for the case of IRAS 22198+6336, where we detect a velocity gradient for all the mapped molecules perpendicular to the most chemically rich outflow of the region, yielding a dynamic mass {approx}> 4 M{sub Sun }. As for AFGL 5142, the hot core emission is resolved into two elongated cores separated {approx}1800 AU. A detailed comparison of the complex molecule peaks to the new CO (2-1) data and H{sub 2}O maser data from the literature suggests also that for AFGL 5142 the complex molecules are mainly associated with disks, except for a faint and extended molecular emission found to the west, which is possibly produced in the interface between one of the outflows and the dense surrounding gas.
ABSTRACT We aim to unveil the observational imprint of physical mechanisms that govern planetary formation in the young, multiple system GG Tau A. We present ALMA observations of 12CO and 13CO 3-2 ...and 0.9 mm continuum emission with 0 35 resolution. The 12CO 3-2 emission, found within the cavity of the circumternary dust ring (at radius <180 au) where no 13CO emission is detected, confirms the presence of CO gas near the circumstellar disk of GG Tau Aa. The outer disk and the recently detected hot spot lying at the outer edge of the dust ring are mapped both in 12CO and 13CO. The gas emission in the outer disk can be radially decomposed as a series of slightly overlapping Gaussian rings, suggesting the presence of unresolved gaps or dips. The dip closest to the disk center lies at a radius very close to the hot spot location at ∼250-260 au. The CO excitation conditions indicate that the outer disk remains in the shadow of the ring. The hot spot probably results from local heating processes. The two latter points reinforce the hypothesis that the hot spot is created by an embedded proto-planet shepherding the outer disk.
Context.The physical structure of proto-planetary disks is not yet well constrained by current observations. Millimeter interferometry is an essential tool to investigate young disks. Aims.We study ...the vertical and radial temperature distribution in a few well-known disks from an observational perspective. The surface density distribution of CO and HCO+ and the scale-height are also investigated. Methods.We report CO observations at sub-arcsecond resolution with the IRAM array of the disks surrounding MWC 480, LkCa 15, and DM Tau, and simultaneous measurements of HCO+ J = 1$\rightarrow$ 0. To derive the disk properties, we fit a standard disk model in which all parameters are power laws of the distance to the star to the data. Possible biases associated with the method are detailed and explained. We compare the properties of the observed disks with similar objects. Results.We find evidence for a vertical temperature gradient in the disks of MWC 480 and DM Tau, as in AB Aur, but not in LkCa 15. The disk temperatures increase with stellar effective temperature. Except for AB Aur, the bulk of the CO gas is at temperatures smaller than 17 K, below the condensation temperature on grains. We find the scale height of the CO distribution to be larger (by 50%) than the expected hydrostatic scale height. The total amount of CO and the isotopologue ratio depends globally on the star. The more UV luminous objects appear to have more CO, but there is no simple dependency. The 13CO / HCO+ ratio is ~600, with substantial variations between sources, and with radius. The temperature behavior is consistent with expectations, but published chemical models have difficulty reproducing the observed CO quantities. Changes in the slope of the surface density distribution of CO, compared to the continuum emission, suggest a more complex surface density distribution than is usually assumed in models. Vertical mixing seems an important chemical agent, as does photo-dissociation by the ambient UV radiation at the disk's outer edge.
We obtain high spatial and spectral resolution images of the CO J=2-1, CN N=2-1 and CS J=5-4 emission with ALMA in Cycle~2. The radial distribution of the turbulent broadening is derived with three ...approaches: two `direct' and one modelling. The first requires a single transition and derives \Tex{} directly from the line profile, yielding a \vturb{}. The second assumes two different molecules are co-spatial thus their relative linewidths allow for a calculation of \Tkin{} and \vturb{}. Finally we fit a parametric disk model where physical properties of the disk are described by power laws, to compare our `direct' methods with previous values. The two direct methods were limited to the outer $r > 40$~au disk due to beam smear. The direct method found \vturb{} ranging from $\approx$~\vel{130} at 40~au, dropping to $\approx$~\vel{50} in the outer disk, qualitatively recovered with the parametric model fitting. This corresponds to roughly $0.2 - 0.4~c_s$. CN was found to exhibit strong non-LTE effects outside $r \approx 140$~au, so \vturb{} was limited to within this radius. The assumption that CN and CS are co-spatial is consistent with observed linewidths only within $r \lesssim 100$~au, within which \vturb{} was found to drop from \vel{100} ($\approx~0.4~c_s$) to nothing at 100~au. The parametric model yielded a near constant \vel{50} for CS ($0.2 - 0.4~c_s$). We demonstrate that absolute flux calibration is and will be the limiting factor in all studies of turbulence using a single molecule. The magnitude of the dispersion is comparable with or below that predicted by the magneto-rotational instability theory. A more precise comparison would require to reach an absolute calibration precision of order 3\%, or to find a suitable combination of light and heavy molecules which are co-located in the disk.
We present sub-arcsecond images of AB Auriga obtained with the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer in the isotopologues of CO, and in continuum at 3 and 1.3 mm. These observations allow us to trace ...the structure of the circumstellar material of AB Aur in regions where optical and IR imaging is impossible because of the emission from the star. These images reveal that the environment of AB Aur is widely different from the proto-planetary disks that surround T Tauri stars like DM Tau and LkCa15 or HAeBe stars like MWC 480 in several aspects. Instead of being centrally peaked, the continuum emission is dominated by a bright, asymmetric (spiral-like) feature at about 140 AU from the central star. Little emission is associated with the star itself. The molecular emission shows that AB Aur is surrounded by a very extended flattened structure ("disk"), which is rotating around the star. Bright molecular emission is also found towards the continuum "spiral". The large-scale molecular structure suggests the AB Aur disk is inclined between 23 and 43 degrees, but the strong asymmetry of the continuum and molecular emission prevents an accurate determination of the inclination of the inner parts. Analysis of the emission in terms of a Keplerian disk provides a reasonable fit to the data, but fails to give a consistent picture because the inclinations determined from 12CO J = 2 1 1, 13CO J = 2 1 1, 13CO J = 1 1 0 and C18O J = 1 1 0 do not agree. The mass predicted for the central star in such Keplerian models is in the range 0.9 to 1.2 M QQQ ?, much smaller than the expected 2.2 M QQQ ? from the spectral type of AB Aur. Better and more consistent fits to the 13CO J = 2 1 1, 13CO J = 1 1 0 data are obtained by relaxing the Keplerian hypothesis. We find significant non-Keplerian motion, with a best fit exponent for the rotation velocity law of 0.41 c 0.01, but no evidence for radial motion. The disk has an inner hole about 70 AU in radius. The disk is warm and shows no evidence of depletion of CO. The dust properties suggest that the dust is less evolved than in typical T Tauri disks. Both the spiral-like feature and the departure from purely Keplerian motion indicates the AB Aur disk is not in quasi-equilibrium. Disk self-gravity is insufficient to create the perturbation. This behavior may be related either to an early phase of star formation in which the Keplerian regime is not yet fully established and/or to a disturbance of yet unknown origin. An alternate, but unproven, possibility is that of a low mass companion located about 40 AU from AB Aur.
Investigating the dynamical evolution of dust grains in proto-planetary disks is a key issue to understand how planets should form. We identify under which conditions dust settling can be constrained ...by high angular resolution ALMA observations at mm wavelengths, and which observational strategies are suited for such studies. We find out that an angular resolution better than or equal to " 0.1" (using 2.3 km baselines at 0.8mm) allows us to constrain the dust scale height and flaring index with sufficient precision to unambiguously distinguish between settled and non-settled disks, provided the inclination is close enough to edge-on (i > 75degrees). Ignoring dust settling and assuming hydrostatic equilibrium when analyzing such disks biase the derived dust temperature, the radial dependency of the dust emissivity index and the surface density distribution.
