The industrial prototype of a superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES), sized to deliver 1 MW for 1 s, was designed and constructed as the result of a research project, partly funded by the ...Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research. After successfully undergoing factory tests, the SMES was installed at the Elettra Synchrotron Light facility in Trieste-I and is there under commissioning and testing as protecting device from temporary voltage dips and interruptions, the most frequent grid malfunctions causing faults of the beam magnetic confinement system. The innovative part of the prototype, which also includes several sophisticated power electronics items, is a 2.6 MJ stored energy magnet, wound with a new low-losses Nb Ti cable, cooled by liquid helium at 4.2 K and adopting an electric insulation design solution to withstand 8 kV and obtain very close contact between coolant and coil. New design hybrid current leads, made of a resistive copper stage and a high temperature superconducting one, cooperate together with a set of three cryocoolers and a multi-shield cryostat to keep the helium loss amount negligible. Electrical insulation of the most critical components and the quench detection system is extremely accurate, because the voltage at coil-ends rises up to 2.500 V. The experimental results obtained at Elettra during the beginning of the SMES commissioning phase are presented
Within the Italian project for the development of 1 MJ/1 MW SMES, Ansaldo-CRIS and CESI have been involved in the design and manufacturing of 1100 A resistive/HTS current leads conduction cooled by a ...closed cycle refrigerator. Main design and technological problems concern the achievement of electrical insulation between cryocooler and current leads at the voltage level of 6 kV together with a thermal contact good enough to keep the upper part of the HTS material at a temperature below 70 K, when the cryocooler temperature is 60 K and about 100 W is the thermal load. Thermal transport properties of electrical insulating materials as thin sheet placed between copper massive plates have been measured as a function of temperature and hence, according to the measured thermal performances, the area for thermal contact with the cryocooler has been suitably dimensioned. Mechanical structure for the whole current leads has been designed and manufactured. Final assembly of resistive section has been completed. Results about the achieved lead performances are presented and discussed.
Multiterminal HVDC power transmission systems present challenges in the specification and design of suitable DC side filtering. This document examines the existing experience and addresses the ...particular technical problems posed by multiterminal systems. The filtering requirements of small taps are discussed, as is the potential use of active filters. Aspects of calculation and design are considered and recommendations made to guide the planners and designers of future multiterminal schemes.
After the recent introduction of the competitive electricity market in many countries, the number of small-size generators connected to the distribution systems is rapidly increasing. This paper ...analyses the impact of distributed generation (DG) on medium voltage (MV) distribution networks. In particular the modifications of voltage profiles, line currents and short circuit currents caused by the introduction of a synchronous generator in the net are considered. For this purpose a real network in radial configuration is used, assuming various generator positions along the feeder and different values of supplied power in maximum and minimum load conditions. In this work, results obtained by computer simulation are reported, highlighting the allowable generation limits regarding different constraints.
In this paper we discuss the latest developments of the STRIP instrument of the "Large Scale Polarization Explorer" (LSPE) experiment. LSPE is a novel project that combines ground-based (STRIP) and ...balloon-borne (SWIPE) polarization measurements of the microwave sky on large angular scales to attempt a detection of the "B-modes" of the Cosmic Microwave Background polarization. STRIP will observe approximately 25% of the Northern sky from the "Observatorio del Teide" in Tenerife, using an array of forty-nine coherent polarimeters at 43 GHz, coupled to a 1.5 m fully rotating crossed-Dragone telescope. A second frequency channel with six-elements at 95 GHz will be exploited as an atmospheric monitor. At present, most of the hardware of the STRIP instrument has been developed and tested at sub-system level. System-level characterization, starting in July 2018, will lead STRIP to be shipped and installed at the observation site within the end of the year. The on-site verification and calibration of the whole instrument will prepare STRIP for a 2-years campaign for the observation of the CMB polarization.
HVDC interconnections in the Mediterranean Basin Cova, B.; Pincella, C.; Simioli, G. ...

Up to now, the African countries in the southern shore of the Mediterranean Sea exported large quantities of natural gas and crude oil to the European northern shores. Nowadays, issues of security of ...supply, integration of the electricity markets, economic co-operation among countries are also driving attention to the "electricity" option to export energy from the South to the North of the Mediterranean. In the last years, especially Algeria, Spain and Italy analyzed the feasibility of interconnection by means of underwater cables. In this paper we describe the main characteristics of some HVDC interconnection projects, whose feasibility studies were performed by CESI: the interconnection Algeria - Spain, the cable connecting Sardinia and Peninsular Italy (SAPEI) and the interconnection Algeria - Italy

The objective of this report is to provide practical guidance for assessing power system harmonic impedance, taking into account the considered network voltage (LV, MV or HV), the disturbing load ...importance (small or great contribution to the power network pollution) and the analytical and computational tools available. Kelfiprim (KP) is a new bactericidal agent containing trimethoprim (T) and sulfametopyrazine (S), a long-acting sulfonamide (ratio 5:4). The posology is one capsule (T 250 mg + S 200 mg) daily, after ...a loading dose of two capsules on the first day. To evaluate the clinical value of Kelfiprim (KP) vs co-trimoxazole (CO) in urinary tract infection (UTI) a controlled multicenter double-blind trial (MDBT) was carried out in 76 patients suffering from persistent and recurrent UTIs. About 90 per cent response rate (sterile urine at the end of treatment) was obtained for KP and about 85 per cent for CO in recurrent UTI. In persistent UTI the rate of recovery was 66.8 per cent and 53 per cent for KP and CO, respectively. Safety of treatments was excellent in 97 per cent of patients treated with Kelfiprim and 87 per cent treated with co-trimoxazole. Two patients, one in each group, were dropped from the study because of adverse reactions.
