This paper proposes a gesture recognition method using convolutional neural networks. The procedure involves the application of morphological filters, contour generation, polygonal approximation, and ...segmentation during preprocessing, in which they contribute to a better feature extraction. Training and testing are performed with different convolutional neural networks, compared with architectures known in the literature and with other known methodologies. All calculated metrics and convergence graphs obtained during training are analyzed and discussed to validate the robustness of the proposed method.
Purpose
(Poly)phenols have been reported to confer protective effects against type 2 diabetes but the precise association remains elusive. This meta-analysis aimed to assess the effects of ...(poly)phenol intake on well-established biomarkers in people with type 2 diabetes or at risk of developing diabetes.
Methods
A systematic search was conducted using the following selection criteria: (1) human randomized controlled trials involving individuals with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes; (2) one or more of the following biomarkers: glucose, glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), insulin, pro-insulin, homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP)/amylin, pro-IAPP/pro-amylin, glucagon, C-peptide; (3) chronic intervention with pure or enriched mixtures of (poly)phenols. From 488 references, 88 were assessed for eligibility; data were extracted from 27 studies and 20 were used for meta-analysis. The groups included in the meta-analysis were: (poly)phenol mixtures, isoflavones, flavanols, anthocyanins and resveratrol.
Results
Estimated intervention/control mean differences evidenced that, overall, the consumption of (poly)phenols contributed to reduced fasting glucose levels (− 3.32 mg/dL; 95% CI − 5.86, − 0.77;
P
= 0.011). Hb1Ac was only slightly reduced (− 0.24%; 95% CI − 0.43, − 0.044;
P
= 0.016) whereas the levels of insulin and HOMA-IR were not altered. Subgroup comparative analyses indicated a stronger effect on blood glucose in individuals with diabetes (− 5.86 mg/dL, 95% CI − 11.34, − 0.39;
P
= 0.036) and this effect was even stronger in individuals taking anti-diabetic medication (− 10.17 mg/dL, 95% CI − 16.59, − 3.75;
P
= 0.002).
Conclusions
Our results support that the consumption of (poly)phenols may contribute to lower glucose levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes or at risk of diabetes and that these compounds may also act in combination with anti-diabetic drugs.
Portugal is one of the most important chestnut world producers with more than 30.000 tons, Trás-os-Montes being the main Portuguese region where almost 85% of the chestnuts are produced. In ...Portugal, the project Regcast has started experimental studies, which aim to give guidelines to the producers for chestnut's water management based on real plant water needs. Three treatments like non-irrigated; deficit irrigated and fully irrigated were carried from June to October 2013 on a 15 years old chestnut orchard. Preliminary results suggest that there are no significant differences between treatments for predawn leaf water potential (ranged from -0,2 to -0,5 MPa), for canopy air temperature and for photosynthetic rate and transpiration rate at 9am. Although, at midday, there are significant differences for leaf water potential, photosynthetic rate and transpiration rate. These three parameters are higher for irrigated treatments, with significant difference for full-irrigated treatment comparing with non-irrigated treatment. Soil moisture results show significant differences between treatments in the more superficial layers (0-40 cm). Predawn leaf water potential results indicate the importance of deep roots in extracting water during the night, but the midday leaf water potentials suggest the true importance of the upper root in water absorption during daylight. The yield, fruit size and fruit quality must be analysed in order to draw more conclusions.
In this work, it is proposed the development a new monopole directional antenna, bioinspired in elliptical leaf, with cut by golden ratio, for 4G band application, by the use of the technique of the ...cut of the radiating element for the increasing of the antenna perimeter, being the first work to use this technique in a bioinspired antenna, promotes resonance frequency turned, and reconfiguring of the antenna parameters as bandwidth, radiation pattern and gain, with the use of the reflector near to the group plane, without the insertion of active devices as the pin diode or change in radiating element. The shape antenna is generated by Gielis formula, built in FR4 substrate, with cuts calculated by golden ratio. To compare the results of the bioinspired monopole on the elliptical sheet, a square-shaped monopole antenna was designed, simulated and measured, the structures were designed in the MATLAB software version 2015(b) and the simulations were performed in the Ansys software version 2016. In the results compared between the square monopole and the bioinspired antenna in the elliptical sheet, it can be seen that the measured bioinspired antenna, compared to the square monopole, presented a bandwidth reduction of 77.27%, a more compact structure, with a reduction of 98%, covering the wireless local area network, and long-time evolution 4G at 2.5 GHz. The proposed technique uses a reflector on the ground plane, to change the parameters of the monopole planar antenna, of omnidirectional radiation pattern to a directional, maintaining the characteristics of the broadband, half-power beamwidth great than 100°, with high current density, and similar gain of a directional antenna. From the results, it has been observed that the elliptical leaf monopole antenna shows broadband characteristics, with a half-power beamwidth of 128°, wideband, the bandwidth of 500 MHz, a gain of 6.28 dBi, a current density of 13.01 A/m
, and circular polarization.
Cross-section studies on prevalence and morbidity of schistosomiasis mansoni are presented for the county of São Lourenço da Mata, state of Pernambuco, as part of a long term project which is being carried out in Northeastern Brazil. The survey was made in the City of São Lourenço da Mata and in 8 rural localities. Prevalence of Schistosomiasis and other helminth infections were very high. Hepato-splenic for ms varied from 1 to 2 per cent.
Results are presented of a nutrition survey including clinical mid anthropometric measurements done from 1965 to 1967 which included 11.283 people from both urban and rural areas of three states in northeastern Brazil (Alagoas, Rio Grande do Norte and Pernambuco), since it was intended to study the nutritional status of people living in endemic areas of schistosomiasis (Schistosomiasis mansoni). A relatively low frequency of clinical signs of the deficiency diseases were noticed even though the low social and economic standards of these population is quite well known. It is therefore sugested that most of these people possibly have nutritional deficiencies at the metabolic level. The most frequent clinical signs noted, were: angular stomatitis (angular lesions), angular scars, filiform papillary atrophy of the tongue. marginal swelling of the gums, nasolabial seborrhea and pellagrous dermatitis. In general, the clinical signs seemed to be most common among people with S. mansoni, although no statistical significance was found. The hemoglobin levels, as determined on just the rural population (State of Pernambuco), showed very low values, particularly among the people showing clinical signs and infected with both S. mansoni and hookworm, as compared to those with only S. mansoni. Weight and height measurements for the age group 1 to 12 year old showed no estatistically significant results among children with and without deficiency diseases, and children with ami withcut schistosomiasis, which is in disagreement with other reported papers. However, the small percentage of severe (hepato-splenic) clinical forms of Schistosomiasis found in the field, in this age group, may account for the difrefence in findings. From the results presented in this preliminary study, no definitive conclusons can be drawn. However, the probable influence of undernutrition on the evolution of Schistosomiasis mansoni indicates the continuation of this line of research in order to obtain a better understanding of the nutritional aspects of the host-parasite relationships in this helminthosis.

This paper proposed a new flexible and wearable antennas design based on teragon pre-fractal geometry until the third level, for monitoring high-temperature in humans for wireless body area network ...operating band. The antennas were built in polyamide laminate dielectric material, which has suitable thermal and mechanical resistance characteristics for application in wearable antennas. The antenna’s structure was generated by teragon pre-fractal geometry using a MATLAB code and simulated with commercial software ANSYS. The application of teragon geometry allows controlling the resonance frequencies and radiation characteristics in comparison to simple square geometry. Teragon level 3 has provided maximum resonance frequency reduction, about 142.4%. In comparison of simulated and measured results on-body we noted that variation of resonance frequency is directly proportional to the fractal level, with the increase of fractal level there is greater variation in the difference between the simulated and measured resonance frequency, close results of gain, and higher simulated SAR value of 0.0653 mW/kg (K = 2), being within standard indicated by international institutions such as FCC and IEEE.

FOXM1 is implicated in genotoxic drug resistance but its role and mechanism of action remain unclear. Here, we establish that γH2AX foci, indicative of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs), accumulate in ...a time-dependent manner in the drug-sensitive MCF-7 cells but not in the resistant counterparts in response to epirubicin. We find that FOXM1 expression is associated with epirubicin sensitivity and DSB repair. Ectopic expression of FOXM1 can increase cell viability and abrogate DSBs sustained by MCF-7 cells following epirubicin, owing to an enhancement in repair efficiency. Conversely, alkaline comet and γH2AX foci formation assays show that Foxm1-null cells are hypersensitive to DNA damage, epirubicin and γ-irradiation. Furthermore, we find that FOXM1 is required for DNA repair by homologous recombination (HR) but not non-homologous end joining (NHEJ), using HeLa cell lines harbouring an integrated direct repeat green fluorescent protein reporter for DSB repair. We also identify BRIP1 as a direct transcription target of FOXM1 by promoter analysis and chromatin-immunoprecipitation assay. In agreement, depletion of FOXM1 expression by small interfering RNA downregulates BRIP1 expression at the protein and mRNA levels in MCF-7 and the epirubicin-resistant MCF-7 Epi(R) cells. Remarkably, the requirement for FOXM1 for DSB repair can be circumvented by reintroduction of BRIP1, suggesting that BRIP1 is an important target of FOXM1 in DSB repair. Indeed, like FOXM1, BRIP1 is needed for HR. These data suggest that FOXM1 regulates BRIP1 expression to modulate epirubicin-induced DNA damage repair and drug resistance.
