We performed a single-shot, contactless measurement of ultrasonic waves on a laser-propelled rod with a homodyne quadrature laser interferometer (HQLI) during the entire duration of its motion. This ...is the first such experimental demonstration of the laser-induced motion of an elastic body where the most important mechanisms that reveal the nature of its motion are presented and explained. Furthermore, these measurements quantitatively demonstrate that the HQLI is an appropriate tool for monitoring high-amplitude (1.3 microm) and high-frequency (200 MHz) ultrasonic waves on moving objects. The applicability of the HQLI can also be extended to measure other optodynamic and high-frequency transient phenomena with a constant sensitivity and a resolution below 1 nm.
Methanol is the simplest alcohol and possible energy carrier because it is easier to store than hydrogen and burns cleaner than fossil fuels. It is a colorless liquid, completely miscible with water ...and organic solvents and is very hygroscopic. Here, simple two-dimensional models of methanol, based on Mercedes–Benz (MB) model of water, are examined by Monte Carlo simulations. Methanol particles are modeled as dimers formed by an apolar Lennard-Jones disk, mimicking the methyl group, and a sphere with two hydrogen bonding arms for the hydroxyl group. The used models are the one proposed by Hribar-Lee and Dill (Acta Chimica Slovenica, 53:257, 2006.) with the overlapping disks and a new model with tangentially fused dimers. The comparison was done between the models, in connection to the MB water, as well as with experimental results and with new simulations done for 3D models of methanol. Both 2D models show similar trends in structuring and thermodynamics. The difference is the most pronounced at lower temperatures, where the smaller model exhibits spontaneous crystallization, while the larger model shows metastable states. The 2D structural organization represents well the clustering tendency observed in 3D models, as well as in experiments. The models qualitatively agree with the bulk methanol thermodynamic properties like density and isothermal compressibility, however, heat capacity at the constant pressure shows trend more similar to the water behavior. This work on the smallest amphiphilic organic solute provides a simple testing ground to study the competition between polar and non-polar effects within the molecule and physical properties.

Sugammadex reverses neuromuscular block (NMB) through binding aminosteroid neuromuscular blocking agents. Although sugammadex appears to be highly selective, it can interact with other drugs, like ...corticosteroids. A prospective single-blinded randomized clinical trial was designed to explore the significance of interactions between dexamethasone and sugammadex.
Sixty-five patients who were anesthetized for elective abdominal or urological surgery were included. NMB was assessed using train-of-four stimulation (TOF), with rocuronium used to maintain the desired NMB depth. NMB reversal at the end of anaesthesia was achieved using sugammadex. According to their received antiemetics, the patients were randomized to either the granisetron or dexamethasone group. Blood samples were taken before and after NMB reversal, for plasma dexamethasone and rocuronium determination. Primary endpoint was time from sugammadex administration to NMB reversal. Secondary endpoints included the ratios of the dexamethasone and rocuronium concentrations after NMB reversal versus before sugammadex administration.
There were no differences for time to NMB reversal between the control (mean 121 ± 61 s) and the dexamethasone group (mean 125 ± 57 s; P = 0.760). Time to NMB reversal to a TOF ratio ≥0.9 was significantly longer in patients with lower TOF prior to sugammadex administration (Beta = -0.268; P = 0.038). The ratio between the rocuronium concentrations after NMB reversal versus before sugammadex administration was significantly affected by sugammadex dose (Beta = -0.375; P = 0.004), as was rocuronium dose per hour of operation (Beta = -0.366; p = 0.007), while it was not affected by NMB depth before administration of sugammadex (Beta = -0.089; p = 0.483) and dexamethasone (Beta = -0.186; p = 0.131). There was significant drop in plasma dexamethasone after sugammadex administration and NMB reversal (p < 0.001).
Administration of dexamethasone to anesthetized patients did not delay NMB reversal by sugammadex.
