The Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) of the BaBar experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric B factory consists of five layers of double-sided, AC-coupled silicon strip detectors. The detectors are readout with ...a custom IC, capable of simultaneous acquisition, digitization and transmission of data. The SVT geometry is shown and the construction phases of its modules are described in detail, with emphasis on the bending procedures needed for the arch-modules of the outer layers.
Infrared and collinear safe event shape distributions and their mean values are determined in \({\mathrm{e^+e^-}}\) collisions at centre-of-mass energies between 45 and 202GeV. A phenomenological ...analysis based on power correction models including hadron mass effects for both differential distributions and mean values is presented. Using power corrections, \(\alpha_s\) is extracted from the mean values and shapes. In an alternative approach, renormalisation group invariance (RGI) is used as an explicit constraint, leading to a consistent description of mean values without the need for sizeable power corrections. The QCD \(\beta\)-function is precisely measured using this approach. From the DELPHI data on Thrust, including data from low energy experiments, one finds \\beta_0 = 7.86 \pm 0.32\ for the one loop coefficient of the \(\beta\)-function or, assuming QCD, \n_{\mathrm{f}} = 4.75 \pm 0.44 \ for the number of active flavours. These values agree well with the QCD expectation of \(\beta_0=7.67\) and \(n_{\mathrm{f}}=5\). A direct measurement of the full logarithmic energy slope excludes light gluinos with a mass below 5GeV.

The Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) of the BaBar experiment at the PEP-II B-factory at SLAC plays a fundamental role for the CP-violation measurement. The SVT is made of five layers of double-sided ...silicon microstrip detectors covering the polar angles between 17.2° and 150° (in the ϒ(4S) center-of-mass reference frame this corresponds to −0.95<cosθ<0.87).
Due to mechanical constraints, the strip signals must be brought to the readout electronics with flexible Upilex circuits (fanouts) where copper traces are deposited with a pitch of ≈50μm.
We present here a detailed description of the mechanical and electric characteristics of these fanouts, with particular attention on the test system that has been designed in order to control the quality of the production.

The Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) of the BaBar experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric B factory is a five-layer double-sided, AC-coupled silicon microstrip detector. It represents the crucial element to ...precisely measure the decay position of B mesons and extract time-dependent CP asymmetries. The SVT architecture is shown and its performance is described, with emphasis on hit resolutions and efficiencies.
A system for in vivo breast imaging with monochromatic x-rays has been designed and built at the synchrotron radiation facility Elettra in Trieste (Italy) and will be operational in 2004. The system ...design involves the possibility of performing both planar mammography and breast tomography. In the present work, the first results obtained with a test set-up for breast tomography are shown and discussed. Tomographic images of in vitro breasts were acquired using monochromatic x-ray beams in the energy range 20-28 keV and a linear array silicon pixel detector. Tomograms were reconstructed using standard filtered backprojection algorithms; the effect of different filters was evaluated. The attenuation coefficients of fibroglandular and adipose tissue were measured, and a quantitative comparison of images acquired at different energies was performed by calculating the differential signal-to-noise ratio of fibroglandular details in adipose tissue. All images required a dose comparable to the dose delivered in clinical, conventional mammography and showed a high resolution of the breast structures without the overlapping effects that limit the visibility of the structures in 2D mammography. A quantitative evaluation of the images proves that the image quality at a given dose increases in the considered energy range and for the considered breast sizes.

The BaBar Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) is designed to provide the high-precision vertexing necessary for making measurements of CP violation at the SLAC B-Factory PEP-II. The instrument consists of ...five layers of double-sided silicon strip detectors and has been installed in the BaBar experiment and taking colliding beam data since May 1999. An overview of the design as well as performance and experience from the initial running will be presented.
We report measurements of branching fractions and charge asymmetries of exclusive decays of neutral and charged B mesons into two-body final states containing a charmonium state and a light strange ...meson. The charmonium mesons considered are J/psi, psi(2S) and chi(c1), and the light meson is either K or K(*). We use a sample of about 124x10(6) BB pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.
