Land models, which have been developed by the modeling community in the past few decades to predict future states of ecosystems and climate, have to be critically evaluated for their performance ...skills of simulating ecosystem responses and feedback to climate change. Benchmarking is an emerging procedure to measure performance of models against a set of defined standards. This paper proposes a benchmarking framework for evaluation of land model performances and, meanwhile, highlights major challenges at this infant stage of benchmark analysis. The framework includes (1) targeted aspects of model performance to be evaluated, (2) a set of benchmarks as defined references to test model performance, (3) metrics to measure and compare performance skills among models so as to identify model strengths and deficiencies, and (4) model improvement. Land models are required to simulate exchange of water, energy, carbon and sometimes other trace gases between the atmosphere and land surface, and should be evaluated for their simulations of biophysical processes, biogeochemical cycles, and vegetation dynamics in response to climate change across broad temporal and spatial scales. Thus, one major challenge is to select and define a limited number of benchmarks to effectively evaluate land model performance. The second challenge is to develop metrics of measuring mismatches between models and benchmarks. The metrics may include (1) a priori thresholds of acceptable model performance and (2) a scoring system to combine data-model mismatches for various processes at different temporal and spatial scales. The benchmark analyses should identify clues of weak model performance to guide future development, thus enabling improved predictions of future states of ecosystems and climate. The near-future research effort should be on development of a set of widely acceptable benchmarks that can be used to objectively, effectively, and reliably evaluate fundamental properties of land models to improve their prediction performance skills.
Climate is an important control on biomass burning, but the sensitivity of fire to changes in temperature and moisture balance has not been quantified. We analyze sedimentary charcoal records to show ...that the changes in fire regime over the past 21,000 yrs are predictable from changes in regional climates. Analyses of paleo‐ fire data show that fire increases monotonically with changes in temperature and peaks at intermediate moisture levels, and that temperature is quantitatively the most important driver of changes in biomass burning over the past 21,000 yrs. Given that a similar relationship between climate drivers and fire emerges from analyses of the interannual variability in biomass burning shown by remote‐sensing observations of month‐by‐month burnt area between 1996 and 2008, our results signal a serious cause for concern in the face of continuing global warming.

To assess the efficacy of a proprietary high-efficiency-particulate-air-filtering extractor tent on reducing the aerosol dispersal of nebulized bronchodilator drugs.
The study was conducted in an unoccupied outpatient room at St. James's Hospital, Dublin, Ireland. A novel real-time, fluorescent particle counter, the Wideband Integrated Bioaerosol Sensor (WIBS), monitored room air continuously for 3 h. Baseline airborne particle count and count during nebulization of bronchodilator drug solutions were recorded.
Nebulization within the tent prevented any increase over background level. Nebulization directly into room air resulted in mean fluorescent particle counts of 4.75 x 105/m3 and 4.21 x 105/m3 for Ventolin and Ipramol, respectively, representing more than 400-fold increases over mean background level. More than 99.3% of drug particles were <2 μm in diameter and therefore small enough to enter the lower respiratory tract.
The extractor tent was completely effective for the prevention of airborne spread of drug particles of respirable size from nebulized therapy. This suggests that extractor tents of this type would be efficacious for the prevention of airborne infection from aerosol-generating procedures during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fire activity has varied globally and continuously since the last glacial maximum (LGM) in response to long-term changes in global climate and shorter-term regional changes in climate, vegetation, ...and human land use. We have synthesized sedimentary charcoal records of biomass burning since the LGM and present global maps showing changes in fire activity for time slices during the past 21,000 years (as differences in charcoal accumulation values compared to pre-industrial). There is strong broad-scale coherence in fire activity after the LGM, but spatial heterogeneity in the signals increases thereafter. In North America, Europe and southern South America, charcoal records indicate less-than-present fire activity during the deglacial period, from 21,000 to ~11,000 cal yr BP. In contrast, the tropical latitudes of South America and Africa show greater-than-present fire activity from ~19,000 to ~17,000 cal yr BP and most sites from Indochina and Australia show greater-than-present fire activity from 16,000 to ~13,000 cal yr BP. Many sites indicate greater-than-present or near-present activity during the Holocene with the exception of eastern North America and eastern Asia from 8,000 to ~3,000 cal yr BP, Indonesia and Australia from 11,000 to 4,000 cal yr BP, and southern South America from 6,000 to 3,000 cal yr BP where fire activity was less than present. Regional coherence in the patterns of change in fire activity was evident throughout the post-glacial period. These complex patterns can largely be explained in terms of large-scale climate controls modulated by local changes in vegetation and fuel load.
This study analysed the effectiveness of plasma treatment on airborne bacteria and surface counts during a 14-day intervention within a four-bedded bay in an adult respiratory ward at Cork University ...Hospital, Ireland. One-hundred-litre air samples were collected twice daily every weekday for 4 weeks, with settle plates and surface swabs. The plasma treatment did not have an effect on airborne bacteria and fungi that was detectable by culture. However, the possibility that culture-based sampling may be insufficiently sensitive to detect an effect, or that the duration of the study was insufficient for plasma treatment to affect a complex environment, cannot be excluded.
A 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (BTZ)-based vinyl cross-linker was synthesized and copolymerized with large excesses of styrene using free radical polymerization to deliver heterogeneous triplet ...photosensitizers in three distinct physical formats: gels, beads, and monoliths. These photosensitizers were employed for the production of singlet oxygen (1O2) and for the aerobic hydroxylation of arylboronic acids via superoxide radical anion (O2 •–), whereby the materials demonstrated good chemical and light stability. BTZ-containing beads and monoliths were exploited as photosensitizers in a commercial flow reactor, and 1O2 production was also demonstrated using direct sunlight irradiation, with a conversion rate comparable to the rates achieved when a 420 nm LED module is used as the source of photons.

A number of measurements of patellar height are in clinical use all of which reference from the tibia. The patellotrochlear index (PTI) has been proposed recently as a more accurate reflection of the ...functional height of the patella and described in normal knees. We compared patellar height measurements in patients with patellofemoral dysplasia. In a retrospective analysis of the MRI scans of 33 knees in 29 patients with patellofemoral dysplasia we assessed the inter- and intraobserver reliability of four patellar height measurements: the recently described PTI, Insall–Salvati (IS), Blackburne–Peel (BP) and Caton–Deschamps (CD) ratios. We also assessed the correlation between the different measurements in predicting patella alta. Three blinded observers on two separate occasions performed the measurements. There were 21 females and 8 males with a median age of 21 years (range 13–33). Statistical analysis revealed good inter-observer reliability for all measurements (0.78 for PTI, 0.78 for IS, 0.73 for BP and 0.77 for CD). Intra-observer reliability was also good (0.80, 0.83, 0.75 and 0.78, respectively). There was weak correlation between the PTI and the other ratios for patella alta. There was a strong correlation between the CD and BP ratios (0.96) and a moderate correlation between IS and CD and IS and BP ratios (0.594 and 0.539, respectively). We propose the PTI as a more clinically relevant measure than the IS, CD and BP ratios.
Aims . We present a comprehensive dataset of optical and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy of type Ia supernova (SN) 2016hnk, combined with integral field spectroscopy (IFS) of its host ...galaxy, MCG -01-06-070, and nearby environment. Our goal with this complete dataset is to understand the nature of this peculiar object.
Methods . Properties of the SN local environment are characterized by means of single stellar population synthesis applied to IFS observations taken two years after the SN exploded. We performed detailed analyses of SN photometric data by studying its peculiar light and color curves. SN 2016hnk spectra were compared to other 1991bg-like SNe Ia, 2002es-like SNe Ia, and Ca-rich transients. In addition, we used abundance stratification modeling to identify the various spectral features in the early phase spectral sequence and also compared the dataset to a modified non-LTE model previously produced for the sublumnious SN 1999by.
Results . SN 2016hnk is consistent with being a subluminous (M-B = -16.7 mag, S-BV =0.43 +/- 0.03), highly reddened object. The IFS of its host galaxy reveals both a significant amount of dust at the SN location, residual star formation, and a high proportion of old stellar populations in the local environment compared to other locations in the galaxy, which favors an old progenitor for SN 2016hnk. Inspection of a nebular spectrum obtained one year after maximum contains two narrow emission lines attributed to the forbidden Ca II lambda lambda 7291,7324 doublet with a Doppler shift of 700 km s(-1). Based on various observational diagnostics, we argue that the progenitor of SN 2016hnk was likely a near Chandrasekhar-mass (M-Ch) carbon-oxygen white dwarf that produced 0.108 M-circle dot of Ni-56. Our modeling suggests that the narrow Ca II features observed in the nebular spectrum are associated with Ca-48 from electron capture during the explosion, which is expected to occur only in white dwarfs that explode near or at the M-Ch limit.
Severe hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD) is a recognized complication of autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT) that is often fatal. Defibrotide (DF) is a ...polydeoxyribonucleotide that has been found to have anti-thrombotic, anti-ischaemic and thrombolytic properties without causing significant anticoagulation. Preliminary studies have demonstrated activity for DF in the treatment of VOD, with minimal associated toxicity. In the present study, 40 patients who fulfilled established criteria for VOD were treated with DF on compassionate grounds in 19 European centres; 28 patients met risk criteria predicting progression of VOD and fatality or had evidence of multiorgan failure (MOF), and were defined as 'poor-risk'. DF was commenced intravenously at a median of 14 d (range, -2 d to 53 d) post SCT at doses ranging from 10 to 40 mg/kg. The median duration of therapy was 18 d (range, 2--71 d). Twenty-two patients showed a complete response (CR) (bilirubin < 34.2 micromol/l and resolution of signs/symptoms of VOD and end-organ dysfunction) CR = 55%, confidence interval (CI) 40--70% and 17 patients (43%) are alive beyond d +100. Ten poor-risk patients showed a complete response (CR = 36%, CI 21--51%). These results demonstrate that DF is an active treatment for VOD following SCT and a randomized trial is now underway in order to further evaluate its role.

Because of the uncertainty in the ability of the clinical evaluation to reflect the status of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic system once dopaminergic therapy has commenced, investigators in PD have sought to develop alternative measures of disease. th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Neurology, a group of investigators active in the fields of biomakers, neuroimaging, and neuroprotection met to review the three techniques mentioned above. Prior to the meeting, the participants developed consensus on a set of 10 criteria for a neuroimaging technique to be considered adequate as a biomarker for progression of PD and levels at which the available data for each technique indicate that the criterion was met. The criteria and each of the three imaging techniques mentioned above were reviewed, and the results of that meeting are presented.
