This study focuses on literary and sub-literary texts which present Egyptian scholars. I first look at outsider’s views (like the church-father Clement of Alexandria), borderline views (like the ...Egyptian priest Chairemon), and insider’s views. For the latter examination, two compositions are studied in more detail. The first is the
, which is a manual of the ideal Egyptian temple, including sections about the duties of several of its intellectual specialists. The second is the
, which is a difficult text about the initiation to arcane religious knowledge and the mysteries of writing.

Die Reihe Materiale Textkulturen ist das Publikationsorgan des gleichnamigen Heidelberger Sonderforschungsbereichs 933, der von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft gefördert wird. The wooden tablet Leipzig ÄMUL 5512 has been studied a few times but the understanding of crucial parts is still problematic. A detailed analysis is given here, including questions of its ...materiality. It is proposed that it documents the settlement of a dispute about the permission to bury somebody, probably with in a rather narrow family circle.
There has been a dispute about the reading of the sign Gardiner, Sign-List U23. I myself have given arguments that contrary to the traditional reading as mr, a more correct reading is mḥr. This ...proposal has been accepted by a number of scholars, some of them even contributing further proof for this reading. However, others have disagreed, thus Ilona Regulski, Dimitri Meeks and especially Simon Schweitzer. The aim of this contribution is to amass all the evidence in favor of the new proposal and at the same time refute the counter-arguments against it.
Summary
After a global discussion about the sense of the term ‘Égyptien de tradition’, a number of special features of classical Egyptian texts written in Late Hieratic are presented. It is ...demonstrated that often an orthographical innovation overlays the fundamentally unchanged grammatical structure.
