Bibliographic and data gathered in scientific bottom trawl surveys carried out off the Southern Coasts of Sicily (Mediterranean Sea), from 1994 to 2009 and between a depth of 10 and 800 m, were ...analysed in order to prepare a checklist of demersal sharks and chimaera, which are species sensitive to fisheries exploitation. Out of the 27 previously reported demersal shark and chimaera taxa in the Mediterranean, only 23 were found in literature and 20 sampled during the surveys in the investigated area. Among the species sampled in the surveys, only 2 ubiquitous (Squalusblainville and Scyliorhinuscanicula) and 3 deep-water (Chimaeramonstrosa , Centrophorusgranulosus and Galeusmelastomus) species showed a wide geographical distribution with a consistent abundance. Excluding the rare (such as Oxynotuscentrina) or uncommon shark (e.g. Squalusacanthias), the estimated frequencies of occurrence and abundance indexes show a possible risk of local extinction for the almost exclusively (e.g. angelshark, Squatina spp.) or preferential (e.g. Scyliorhinusstellaris) neritic species.
Batoid species play a key role in marine ecosystems but unfortunately they have globally declined over the last decades. Given the paucity of information, abundance data and the main life history ...traits for batoids, obtained through about three decades of bottom trawl surveys, are presented and discussed. The surveys were carried out in two areas of the Central Mediterranean (South of Sicily and Malta Island), in a timeframe ranging from 1990 to 2018. Excluding some batoids, the abundance trends were stable or increasing. Only R. clavata, R. miraletus, and D. oxyrinchus showed occurrence and abundance indexes notable enough to carry out more detailed analysis. In particular, spatial distribution analysis of these species highlighted the presence of two main hotspots in Sicilian waters whereas they seem more widespread in Malta. The lengths at first maturity (L50) were 695 and 860, 635 and 574, and 364 and 349 mm total length (TL), respectively, for females and males of D. oxyrinchus, R. clavata, and R. miraletus. The asymptotic lengths (L∞) and the curvature coefficients (K) were 1365 and 1240 (K = 0.11 and 0.26), 1260 and 1100 (K = 0.16 and 0.26), and 840 and 800 mm TL (K = 0.36 and 0.41), respectively, for females and males of D. oxyrinchus, R. clavata, and R. miraletus. The lack of detailed quantitative historical information on batoids of Sicily and Malta does not allow to analytically judge the current status of the stocks, although the higher abundance of some species within Malta raises some concern for the Sicilian counterpart. In conclusion, suitable actions to protect batoids in the investigated area are recommended.
Elasmobranchs are among the marine species more threatened by overfishing. Their conservation is often impaired by the lack of knowledge of species’ life history traits. We filled knowledge gaps on ...age and growth of two threatened smooth-hound sharks (Mustelus mustelus, Mm; Mustelus punctulatus, Mp) in the central Mediterranean Sea, combining standard vertebrae analysis with growth increment data from a tagging survey. Our data revealed that the two species grow at a faster rate than previously estimated using vertebrae reading only. The maximum age/size found was higher for Mm (16 years, 170 cm TL) than Mp (8 years, 120 cm TL), the first species attaining larger size-at-age than the second one. Mp reaches maturity at earlier ages (A50 3 years for both females and males) than Mm (A50 females: 4 years; males: 3 years). The use of the tag-recapture method to validate the growth rate, firstly derived by sectioned vertebrae readings, highlighted the presence of false check marks. The new estimates of growth and longevity have important implications for the assessment of natural mortality, productivity, and stock resilience to fishing pressure which, combined with the high site fidelity highlighted by tagging data, may have crucial implications for the conservation of these two threatened sharks in the Mediterranean Sea.
The aristeids Aristaeomorpha foliacea and Aristeus antennatus are two species of great economic importance in the Mediterranean Sea, where they are exploited almost exclusively by bottom trawlers. We ...analysed their geographical and inter-annual patterns using data collected, following a standardized protocol, during the MEDITS international experimental bottom trawl surveys. The data used consisted of standardized abundance and biomass indices, size structure and individual biological information collected in the northern Mediterranean for more than two decades. Several univariate and multivariate methodologies were used to analyse the data. The current study confirms previous findings, such as the longitudinal gradient in the relative presence of the aristeids, but also offers additional information for a better understanding of the intrinsic variability of the data over the years and between areas. Moreover, geographical variability in the somatic condition index is discussed, taking into account the role of environmental conditions and fishing pressure. The large geographical variability found for both species in this regional approach reflects the importance of additional studies at a small-scale geographical level. Such studies could be particularly important for managing and ensuring the stability of these species, for which large regional approaches may be inadequate.
The recovering of Peristedion cataphractum otoliths collected between 1991 and 1992 from specimens sampled off the southern coasts of Sicily has allowed a direct ageing and growth estimation to be ...compared with the length based method estimates produced in successive years. Overall, 855 left otoliths (sagittae) were recovered, measured, and read as a whole surface. The core and rings distances were also measured to perform back-calculation. The otolith length-body length relationships were allometric. Back-calculated lengths at age were in agreement with the lengths estimated with otolith readings. Present results showed a good congruency between otoliths and length based method.
We examined the protection effect of a long-established fisheries protection zone by studying the demersal communities and the biomass size spectra of specific taxonomic groups. The results and the ...relevant management implications of the community analysis are discussed within the context of the MEDITS trawl survey program, from which the data was derived. The demersal fishery resources on the muddy bottoms of Maltese trawling grounds were found to be stratified in four main depth ranges: 83 to 166 m (outer continental shelf), 140 to 230 m (shelf break), 270 to 440 m (shallow slope), and 466 to 701 m (deep slope). Significant differences were detected between the inside and outside zones of the outer continental shelf. Stations from this stratum inside the protected zone had twice as much biomass as those outside as well as larger individuals of some species (e.g. elasmobranchs). The depth strata identified do not coincide with those sampled in existing trawl survey programmes in the Sicilian Channel, which were set up without reference to demersal assemblage structure and its relation to depth. It is therefore clear that characterisation of the biotic assemblages is important in order to obtain a better sampling representation of each depth- stratum/assemblage type, and this should be considered in the survey design.
Most Mediterranean fish and crustaceans’ stocks are overexploited, but they could increase if fishing intensity would be reduced for only a few years. Today exploited stocks are constituted of young ...and small fish that are mostly caught before they can reproduce. This paper, which is based on long-term data (1994–2010) obtained from experimental bottom trawl surveys, contributes to the Parapenaeus longirostris exploitation control in South Tyrrhenian Sea (SW Mediterranean; GSA 10). Stock dynamics parameters of rose shrimp were investigated and compared in two different locations along the North coasts of Sicily (South of GSA 10) characterized by different fishing patterns. A huge inter-annual biomass and density fluctuations of the investigated rose shrimp were recorded, although no significant trends over time were observed, in both sectors. It is worth highlighting that the mean year fishing indices (mean KW of the trawl fleet, as capacity index, and number of days at sea per month, as activity index), contrary to what is reported in literature, were significantly higher in the western part of the area, where the stock is surprisingly mainly composed of young specimens. The fishing / total mortality ratio F/Z showed an overfishing status of rose shrimp in the two sectors, but at a lower degree than the rose shrimp of the whole GSA 10. The present paper support two stocks conjecture for the rose shrimp. The different biological structures in the two studied sectors are mainly influenced by interactions among the typical high plasticity of the life history species in the Mediterranean Sea and several typologies and activities (including the illegal aspects) of fishing fleets harbored in the E and W sectors.
The quantification of capture-related physiological stress is an important factor when assessing the potential for post-release survival in sharks that are incidentally captured. In the absence of ...these biological data and when the post-release fate is unknown, effective management plans cannot be formulated and may lead to highly susceptible shark populations being overfished. Here, we measured the levels of lactate, glucose, alanine amino transferase (ALT), aspartate amino transferase (AST), Ca2+, Na+ K+,Cl – Mg 2+ and Pi in the plasma of mature and immature lesser spotted dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula, herein dogfish) which were incidentally captured at two depths (shallow: 50-200 m, and deep: 201-500 m) by bottom trawl off the coast of southern Sicily. These values were used as biomarkers and physiological indicators of the secondary stress response associated with capture.
This study found that dogfish captured in deeper waters (below 200 m) had elevated levels of glucose, Na+, Ca2+ and K+ compared to those inhabiting depths less than <200 m. We hypothesize that the elevated levels of physiological stress in dogfish captured at greater depths may be related to the prolonged duration of the interactions with the fishing gear in the area off southern Sicily. Our findings provide new data on the capture-related stress in dogfish and increase the understanding of the potential for post-release survival in sharks captured at two depths by bottom trawl, information that is important for improving the general management plans for the fishery. However, our PC Analysis results revealed that Maturity have a positive contribution from the sample weight, sample length, ALT, AST and a negative contribution from Pi.

The application of statistical models on a time series of data arising from the MEDITS International Trawl Survey, an experimental demersal resources survey carried out during six years (1994-1999) ...in the same season of the year (late spring - early summer) using the same fishing gear in a large part of the Mediterranean, has allowed for a study to compare, for the first time, the space-time distribution, abundance, and size structure of the two Aristeids Aristaeomorpha foliacea and Aristeus antennatus throughout most of the Mediterranean Sea. This research has shown a large variability among the six reference areas, that were arbitrarily defined within the basin. In particular the two shrimps do not seem to present any correlation or yield continuity in the years. The same lack of homogeneity was also observed in the time trend of the abundances and frequencies of each of the two species. These data seem to confirm the intrinsic variability of the species, the cause of which is still unknown and undocumented. Nevertheless, a longitudinal gradient of catches has been observed where A. antennatus is more abundant in the west and A. foliacea in the east of the basin.
