In the present paper, LIB spectra of different water samples having varying concentration of Cr (certified reference material, CRM) have been recorded by using liquid jet (fabricated in our ...laboratory) configuration. Calibration curves for different atomic lines of Cr are compared and it is found that calibration curve for Cr II (283.5
nm) atomic line is the best in terms of the Limit of detection (LOD) which is found to be 30
ppm. This calibration curve has been used for quantification of Cr in wastewater collected from Cr-electroplating industry where the concentration of Cr is found to be 1500
ppm. Its removal can be planned by biological system, which is in progress.

This work reports the color tunable emission from Ho3+/Tm3+/Yb3+ co-doped YTaO4 phosphors synthesized through high temperature solid state reaction method. Pure phase formation and the effect of concentrations of dopants on the phase have been confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. Vibrational structure and the phonon frequencies have been monitored using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) measurements. The color tunability from green to blue regions has been studied by varying the concentration of sensitizer (Yb3+ ion) via upconversion (UC) process on excitation with 980 nm diode laser qualitatively as well as quantitatively. The variation in UC emission intensity in different regions at different concentrations of Yb3+ ion is explained using energy level diagram of Ho3+, Tm3+ and Yb3+ ions. The color tunability has been also observed with pump power of excitation source. The locus of the color coordinates in CIE diagram of the YTaO4:Tm3+, Ho3+, Yb3+ show different curvatures with different pump powers at different Yb3+ concentrations. The laser induced optical heating is responsible for variation in the color on increasing pump power. The color coordinates has been also investigated by varying the external temperature. The color tunable behaviours of YTaO4:Tm3+, Ho3+, Yb3+ phosphor by varying the concentration of Yb3+ ion, pump power of diode laser and at different external temperatures in the same material makes it suitable for the applications in security and fluorescence imaging.

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was investigated to estimate the viability as a simple and rapid method for analysis of nutrient elements in seed kernels of cucurbits. LIBS spectra were recorded in the range of 200–975nm by using Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at 532nm (4ns, 10Hz) attached to echelle spectrometer with intensified charged coupled device (ICCD). The spectral analysis revealed the presence of several elements like C, O, N, Mg, Ca, Na and K in seeds. The quantification of elements (Mg, Ca, Na and K) through LIBS was done using calibration curve method in which all calibration curve shows good linearity (r>0.95). The result obtained through LIBS was in reasonable agreement with that obtained through atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was also applied to the LIBS data for rapid categorization of seed samples belonging to same species although samples have similar nutrient elements.
Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) is an atomic emission spectroscopic technique having unique capability of an in-situ monitoring tool for detection and quantification of elements present ...in different artifacts. Archaeological coins collected form G.R. Sharma Memorial Museum; University of Allahabad, India has been analyzed using LIBS technique. These coins were obtained from excavation of Kausambi, Uttar Pradesh, India. LIBS system assembled in the laboratory (laser Nd:YAG 532nm, 4ns pulse width FWHM with Ocean Optics LIBS 2000+ spectrometer) is employed for spectral acquisition. The spectral lines of Ag, Cu, Ca, Sn, Si, Fe and Mg are identified in the LIBS spectra of different coins. LIBS along with Multivariate Analysis play an effective role for classification and contribution of spectral lines in different coins. The discrimination between five coins with Archaeological interest has been carried out using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The results show the potential relevancy of the methodology used in the elemental identification and classification of artifacts with high accuracy and robustness.

Sesame seed is a reservoir of nutritional components with numerous beneficial effects along with health promotion in humans. The bioactive components present in the seed include vital minerals, ...vitamins, phytosterols, polyunsaturated fatty acids, tocopherols and unique class of lignans such as sesamin and sesamolin. The presence of phenylpropanoid compounds namely lignans along with tocopherols and phytosterols provide defense mechanism against reactive oxygen species and increases keeping quality of oil by preventing oxidative rancidity. In this article, we have reviewed the nutraceutical, pharmacological, traditional and industrial value of sesame seeds with respect to bioactive components that hold high antioxidant value. Valuable information on superior functional components of sesame will strongly promote the use of sesame seeds in the daily diet world-wide. In spite of huge repertoire of sesame germplasm collection, limited research efforts on the use of conventional and biotechnological methodologies have resulted in minimal success in developing nutritionally superior cultivars. In consequence, value addition efforts in sesame would enable development of genotypes with high antioxidant activity and subsequently prevention of free radical related diseases. Modification of bioactive components in sesame would enable production of stabilized sesame oil with enhanced shelf life and better market value.

The E4 allele of apolipoprotein E (ApoE4) is a key genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD), increasing the risk of developing the disease by up to three-fold. However, the ...mechanisms by which ApoE4 contributes to AD pathogenesis are poorly understood. Here, we utilize a mouse model expressing either human ApoE3 or human ApoE4 to examine the effects of the E4 allele on a wide range of genetic and molecular pathways that are altered in early AD pathology. We demonstrate that ApoE4-expressing mice begin to show early differential expression of multiple genes, leading to alterations in downstream pathways related to neural cell maintenance, insulin signaling, amyloid processing and clearance, and synaptic plasticity. These alterations may result in the earlier accumulation of pathological proteins such as β-amyloid that may build up within cells, leading to the accelerated degeneration of neurons and astrocytes as observed in ApoE4-positive individuals. We also examine the metabolic effects associated with a high-fat diet (HFD) in male ApoE4-expressing mice compared with regular chow diet (RD) fed mice at different ages. We found that young ApoE4-expressing mice fed HFD developed metabolic disturbances, such as elevated weight gain, blood glucose, and plasma insulin levels that cumulatively have been observed to increase the risk of AD in humans. Taken together, our results reveal early pathways that could mediate ApoE4-related AD risk and may help identify more tractable therapeutic targets for treating ApoE4-associated AD.

Introduction: Ossifying fibromas are rare, non-aggressive benign tumours of the bone, commonly involving the posterior mandible in middle-aged individuals with a female predilection. Findings: ...Clinical manifestations include asymptomatic expansion of the mandible with infrequent maxillary lesions, pain, malocclusion, and compromised quality of life including aesthetic perception. Owing to multiplicity of features, tendency of recurrence, and possibility of malignant transformation, the diagnosis, treatment, and post-operative management of ossifying fibroma are always a challenge. Take-away Lessons: Study aims to report a clinical case of extensive swelling involving the coronoid process and condyle on the right side to crossing the mid-line of the mandible with compromised functions and aesthetics. The article describes the clinical, histopathological, and radiological features of the case. The possible treatment and challenges encountered are discussed.
The present paper deals with the detection and quantification of toxic heavy metals like Cd, Co, Pb, Zn, Cr, etc. in environmental samples by using the technique of laser-induced breakdown ...spectroscopy (LIBS) and calibration-free LIBS (CF-LIBS). A MATLAB

program has been developed based on the CF-LIBS algorithm given by earlier workers and concentrations of pollutants present in industrial area soil have been determined. LIBS spectra of a number of certified reference soil samples with varying concentrations of toxic elements (Cd, Zn) have been recorded to obtain calibration curves. The concentrations of Cd and Zn in soil samples from the Jajmau area, Kanpur (India) have been determined by using these calibration curves and also by the CF-LIBS approach. Our results clearly demonstrate that the combination of LIBS and CF-LIBS is very useful for the study of pollutants in the environment. Some of the results have also been found to be in good agreement with those of ICP-OES.
•Effects of Alkaline Earth ions on radiative as well as non-radiative relaxations have been monitored.•The blue UC emission intensity of CAO: Tm, Yb phosphor enhances upto 10 times in presence of ...Mg2+ ion.•The high spectral and color purity of CAO: Tm, Yb, 10Mg phosphor have been achieved which suggests this material as pure blue upconverter.•In non-radiative relaxation, laser induced optical heating confirms that incorporation of Mg2+ ion increases the radiative process.
Tm3+-Yb3+ co-doped alkaline earths aluminate phosphors of the type XAl2O4 (X = Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba) are synthesized using solid state reaction method. The crystal structure and the phase of all these phosphor materials are confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. The surface morphologies of all the samples are monitored by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) technique. The Ultraviolet (UV)-visible-near-IR region (NIR) absorption spectra show sharp f-f electronic transitions of Tm3+ and Yb3+ ions which are more prominent in CaAl2O4:Tm3+,Yb3+ phosphor. The upconversion (UC) emission spectra of the samples have been measured which give intense blue and NIR emissions on excitation with 980 nm radiation. It is observed that CaAl2O4:Tm3+,Yb3+ phosphor gives better UC emission in blue as well as NIR region than the others. We have also monitored the UC emission spectra of CaAl2O4:Tm3+, Yb3+ in the presence of other alkaline earths metals (i.e. Mg2+, Sr2+ and Ba2+ ions) as sensitizer. It is found that Mg2+ ion is a better enhancer for UC emission in CaAl2O4:Tm3+,Yb3+ phosphor (upto ten times) than the others. The spectral and color purity are found to be maximum for CaAl2O4:Tm3+,Yb3+,10Mg2+ phosphor. The laser induced optical heating is observed quantitatively in CaAl2O4:Tm3+,Yb3+,xMg2+ (x = 0, 5, 10 and 15 mol%) phosphors on excitation with 980 nm radiation. Thus, the maximum color and spectral purity for blue region in CaAl2O4:Tm3+,Yb3+,Mg2+ phosphor may be applicable as blue LED as well as the laser induced optical heating can be used for the application in cancer treatment based on opto-thermal therapy and as an optical heater.
