Abies spp. in general have been shown to need a period of cold stratification to break dormancy and germinate, but this can be very time consuming. In this study, hydropriming by itself and in ...combination with biopriming was carried out on Abies hickelii and Abies religiosa seeds. For biopriming, three species of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria ( Pseudomonas fluorescens, P. putida and Bacillus subtilis) were tested. The purpose was to determine if germination and growth could be improved for these two endangered species. Our results demonstrated that treating A. hickelii and A. religiosa with both hydropriming and biopriming with certain strains of Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) could improve germination rates up to 91% for A. hickelii and up to 68% for A. religiosa. Importantly, these treatments showed no significant negative impact on the growth of A. religiosa and actually improved growth in A. hickelii. The application of both hydropriming and biopriming offer possibly an alternative methodology to improve germination, survival and preservation of these fir tree species of Mexico that are at risk of extinction.
There are numerous studies evaluating biocontrol of root rot by using the antagonistic effects of either arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) or rhizobacteria, but usually independently. Fewer studies, ...although growing in number, report on evaluating the effectiveness of concurrent fungi–bacteria inoculation in combating root rot; and furthermore, there are none to date reported with papaya. In this study, an indigenous Pseudomonas sp. (PPV3) was isolated from roots of papaya (Carica papaya L. cv. Maradol) and used with an AMF complex (MTZ01) consisting of four fungi Glomus intraradices, Glomus mosseae, Glomus etunicatum and Gigaspora albida to inoculate roots of papaya in order to determine their antagonistic effects against Fusarium oxysporum, individually and in combination. It was found that with inoculation with PPV3 and MTZ01 protection was highest (85%) and had reduced disease (10%) as well as reducing F. oxysporum colonization in papaya seedlings. Inoculations with MTZ01 or PPV3 showed an efficacy of 54 and 60%, with a level of disease severity of the 38 and 22%, respectively. The combination of the AMF complex (MTZ01) with rhizobacterial Pseudomonas sp. (PPV3) modified the effects of F. oxysporum and provided increased protection for C. papaya than either acting alone. These results suggest that rhizobacteria and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi acting together formed a mutualistic relationship that enhances disease control against F. oxysporum and stimulates growth in C. papaya.

The potential of four yeasts (Debaryomyces hansenii, Rhodotorula minuta, Cryptococcus laurentii and Cryptococcus diffluens) and three bacteria (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, Bacillus subtilis and ...Stenotrophomonas rhizophila) with antagonistic capacity against anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides in mango cv. Ataulfo fruit was investigated. Germination of C. gloeosporioides spores was significantly inhibited by all marine yeasts and bacteria strains of an in vitro test. When yeasts and bacteria were tested on mango fruit, the marine yeast D. hansenii 1R11CB strain and marine bacteria S. rhizophilaKM02 strain were the best antagonists to anthracnose (C. gloeosporioides), which significantly decreased disease incidence by 56% and 89%, respectively, and reduced lesion diameter by 91% and 92%, respectively. All the isolated strains of the phytopathogen, yeasts and bacteria were molecularly identified. Our results from in vitro and in vivo experiments suggest that marine yeasts and bacteria strains can be used as some effective biological control agents for anthracnose in mango.
Ancho-type pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) is a crop susceptible to Pythium ultimum, which has already been controlled with synthetic fungicide applications; however, marine antagonist microorganisms ...could be an alternative source of control. The efficiency in vitro and in vivo of marine bacteria and yeasts was determined against P. ultimum. The inhibition of the radial growth of P. ultimum was quantified in vitro by the bacteria Stenotrophomonas rhizophila KM01 and KM02; Bacillus subtilis RBM01 and RBM02, B. amyloliquefaciens 2RLBF and 3R4CF; and Pseudomonas spp. 2R6BF and 2RE9CF, as well as the yeasts Debaryomyces hansenii 1R11AB, 1R11CB, and LL01 and Cryptococcus laurentii 2R3BF and 2R1CB. The β-1,3-glucanase activity of the marine microorganisms was quantified in the presence of the phytopathogen. The disease index (DI), growth parameters, and colony forming units (CFU) were determined in ancho-type pepper plants inoculated with marine bacteria, yeasts, and P. ultimum. The radial zone of the phytopathogen was inhibited by 80% and 75% by S. rhizophila KM01 and C. laurentii 2R1CB, respectively. D. hansenii LL01 and S. rhizophila KM02 showed the highest activity of β-1,3-glucanase, with 6060 U/mL and 47 U/mL, respectively. B. subtilis RBM02 protected 100% of the plants from the oomycete, and an increase was quantified in all the growth parameters and CFU. The use of these marine bacteria and yeasts are, therefore, an option for P. ultimum biocontrol in ancho-type pepper plants, thereby minimizing the application of synthetic fungicides.
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMFs) play an important role in soil improvement, leading to the enhanced growth and yield of the host plants. The diversity, abundance, and richness of AMFs were ...evaluated in eight coffee plantations (Coffea arabica L.) with different erosion degrees. The results indicated that 26 AMFs morphotypes scattered across four genera were recovered and included five species. Funneliformis species were the most dominant representatives of the total isolates followed by Claroideoglomus, Rhizoglomus, Gigaspora, Acaulospora, Glomus, Diversispora, Septoglomus, and Scutellospora. The highest diversity and richness were found in non-eroded agroecosystems, followed by sites with a minimum erosion, and the lowest values were reported within the highly eroded agroecosystems. These results suggest that eroded soil affects AMF fungi, creating the need to carry out studies that allow for the implementation of cultural practices where biodiversity and soil are preserved.
Maize is a crop important worldwide, but its production is limited to phosphorus availability in soil. Plants form a symbiotic association to improve their nutrition with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi ...(AMF), which increase to absorption phosphorus (P) and the expression of transporters of the family Pht1. Few studies have focused on native maize plants and AMF. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the morpho-physiological response and expression of phosphate Pht1 transporters in two native maize plants inoculated with Claroideoglomus etunicatum and P concentrations. The height, leaf area, dry biomass, CO2 assimilation rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, intercellular CO2, water potential, greenness index, total chlorophyll, and ZEAma; Pht1;3 and ZEAma; Pht1;6 transporter expressions in maize plants under P (0.01 and 1 mM) concentrations were evaluated. The results showed that each native maize plant had a differential response in morpho-physiology and transporter expressions when they were inoculated with AMF and P. The response of maize plant was related with its genotype and phenotype plus environmental factor that influenced the AMF-host interaction, mycorrhizal colonization and soil nutrient absorption.
Introducción: la molécula CD6 es una glicoproteína de membrana considerada un antígeno de diferenciación leucocitario. El anticuerpo monoclonal humanizado itolizumab (anti-CD6) reconoce la molécula ...CD6 humana en las células mononucleares periféricas malignas de pacientes con leucemia linfocítica crónica- B y en los linfocitos de lesiones cutáneas de pacientes con linfoma T cutáneo. Objetivo: exponer los resultados preliminares de tres pacientes con leucemia linfocítica crónica-B tratados con el itolizumab, con dosis de 0.8 mg/kg/dosis semanal por 12 semanas. Métodos: la evaluación de la toxicidad asociada a la administración del itolizumab se realizó según Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events, versión 3.0, y la evaluación del beneficio clínico se definió según los criterios de respuesta, previamente establecidos por el National Cancer Institute Work Group, en remisión completa, remisión parcial, enfermedad estable, progresión y recaída. La evaluación de la respuesta se realizó después de haber recibido 6 administraciones del itolizumab (semana 7), después de haber recibido las 12 administraciones del itolizumab (semana 13), 6 semanas después de la última dosis (semana 18) y 12 semanas después de la última dosis (semana 24). Los datos de cada paciente se recogieron en las historias clínicas. Resultados: se evaluó la seguridad de la administración del producto en pacientes con síndromes linfoproliferativos CD6+ y se obtuvieron evidencias preliminares del efecto terapéutico de dicho fármaco. Conclusiones: en el 100 % de los pacientes incluidos se reportó la aparición de fiebre y escalofríos relacionados con la primera infusión. No se observaron efectos adversos serios. Todos los pacientes evaluados tuvieron al menos alguna mejoría clínica o hematológica.
Introducción: el mieloma múltiple es una enfermedad de distribución universal, con mayor incidencia en regiones de Europa y América. Objetivos: describir las características demográficas, los ...parámetros clínicos y de laboratorio, la sobrevida libre de eventos y la sobrevida global, así como los factores pronósticos de los pacientes con esta enfermedad atendidos en el Instituto de Hematología e Inmunología. Método: se realizó un estudio descriptivo retrospectivo que incluyó 88 pacientes con el diagnóstico de mieloma múltiple atendidos en el Servicio de Adultos del Instituto de Hematología e Inmunología desde el año 2000 hasta el 2010. Resultados: la edad promedio fue de 60,7 años; fue más frecuente en el sexo masculino y en los pacientes con el color de la piel blanca. Los dolores óseos, la astenia y la palidez cutáneo-mucosa fueron los hallazgos principales al inicio de la enfermedad. La anemia, la eritrosedimentación acelerada, las cifras elevadas de creatinina, hipoalbuminemia e hipergammaglobulinemia fueron las manifestaciones de laboratorio más llamativas en el momento del diagnóstico. La sobrevida global fue de 5,2 años y la sobrevida libre de eventos de 3,3 años. Los pacientes que no respondieron al primer esquema de inducción tuvieron una sobrevida más corta (p < 0,01), al igual que los pacientes con una cifra inicial de hemoglobina inferior a 8 g/dL (p = 0,043) y una albúmina menor de 30 g/L (p = 0,035). Conclusión: las características del grupo de pacientes estudiados no difieren de los hallazgos realizados por otros autores.
Introducción: la leucemia mieloide crónica (LMC) es un síndrome mieloproliferativo crónico caracterizado por la presencia de una alteración citogenética en las células proliferantes, el cromosoma ...Filadelfia (Ph), que da lugar a la formación de un gen híbrido BCR-ABL, fundamental en la patogénesis de la enfermedad. Objetivo: describir el comportamiento de esta enfermedad en los pacientes tratados en el Instituto de Hematología e Inmunología. Métodos: se estudiaron las características de esta enfermedad en sus aspectos diagnósticos, evolutivos y terapéuticos, en los pacientes atendidos desde marzo de 1974 hasta junio de 2012. Resultados: el grupo de edad que predominó para ambos sexos fue de 30 a 39 años. El 21 % de los pacientes se encontraban asintomáticos en el momento del diagnóstico. La esplenomegalia fue el signo predominante en el 64 % de los pacientes. Los hallazgos iniciales más significativos del hemograma consistieron en leucocitosis, basofilia y anemia. El 81 % de los casos se encontraba en fase crónica al inicio de la enfermedad. La mayoría de los pacientes debutaron con niveles de LDH elevados. Se observó el cromosoma Filadelfia en el 68 % de los pacientes a quienes se les realizó estudio citogenético. El estudio del reordenamiento del gen BCR/ABL se realizó en el 70 % de los casos, siendo positivo en su totalidad. La media de supervivencia en relación con el tratamiento fue mayor en los pacientes tratados con mesilato de imatinib desde el momento del diagnóstico (11.7 años). La media de supervivencia global es de 11.44 años y la mediana es de 8.18 años. Conclusiones: todos los parámetros demográficos, clínicos, de laboratorio y terapéuticos coincidieron con lo descrito en la literatura, excepto la edad de aparición de la LMC que evidenció una disminución.
