A vacant unit, once used by a Portuguese Deli, was converted to a bar/music room in Toronto. The unit was divided into two spaces along its north-south axis. The western portion was designed as a ...music room that would provide a performance space from a solo artist to a Jazz combo to a small rock band. The eastern part was designed as a regular bar/dining area. The plan also called for a microbrewery unit at the back of the unit. The bar music can be loud, while the music room can be pianissimo to forte depending on the type of performance. The acoustical design aspects are critical for the music room. In addition, the acoustical separation between the two spaces is equally important. The music room/bar is currently in use. The design results are compared to actual field measurements. The results showed that the music venue performed satisfactorily. The acoustical separation between the music venue and the bar/restaurant was better than expected other than an installation deficiency of the south side sound lock doors. The background sound along the northern portion was NC-35 or less. However, the southern portion’s background sound exceeded NC-35 due to the hissing of the return air grille. The acoustical design and the performance results of the music venue-bar/restaurant are presented in this paper.

Cantilevered concrete balcony slab in high-rise residential buildings that create a thermal bridge is under scrutiny due to an increasing demand for energy efficient and thermally comfortable ...occupied spaces. In North America balcony slabs with thermal breaks are uncommon among the current residential stock. The investigation reported in this article focussed on the impact of an alternate slab design with a concrete curb that was successfully used in the past. The alternate design consisted of using an insulated concrete curb at the sliding balcony door. The thermal performance of this design was carried out using THERM. Comparison of the simulation results of the alternate design were done with simulation results using non-thermally broken conventional slab, and thermally broken slab with proprietary details. The results showed that measurable increase in surface temperatures are possible with the insulated curb design. The results of the current investigation provided a framework for practical procedure that can be incorporated for cantilevered concrete slabs for better energy efficiency and thermal comfort as compared to conventional construction practices and as an alternate to thermally broken slab design.
A recent operational need for the development of a large (101,000 ft3) reverberant acoustic chamber at the Space Power Facility of NASA Glenn Research Center’s Plum Brook Station with the requirement ...of generating sound pressure levels (SPL) as high as 163 dB has resulted in the need to re-examine the generation of noise in reverberant rooms. Early in the design stage, it was realized that the acoustic power level capability (10-30 kW) of conventional electrodynamic air modulators, such as those supplied by the Wyle Corporation, would be required in unprecedented numbers to meet the test spectra requirements. The design team then turned to a lesser known modulator, the hydraulically driven air modulator supplied by the Team Corporation, which has 150-200 kW acoustic power capability. The advantage to the project was a significant reduction in the number of modulators required to meet the requirements. However, since only limited characterization of Team modulator’s performance has been reported, a test program was required in order to mitigate the risk of the design of the RATF. Aiolos Corporation, which is responsible for the acoustic design of the RATF, and the Institute of Aerospace Research (IAR) of the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), entered into a collaborative agreement with the objective of characterizing, optimizing and investigating the controllability of the Team modulators. The test program was performed at the NRC-IAR reverberant chamber, a 19,000 ft3 facility located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The current paper provides details of the principle of operation of the Team modulators, including their servo control loops and provides of a summary of the characterization and controllability test program.

Beef tallow, a slaughter house waste was used as a substrate for lipase production, employing
Pseudomonas gessardii. The strain,
P. gessardii was isolated from the beef tallow acclimatized soil. The ...crude lipase activity at 139
U/ml by volume was obtained at optimized conditions of pH 5.0 and temperature of 37
°C. After purification, a 7.59-fold purity of lipase with specific activity of 1120
U/mg protein and molecular mass of 92
kDa was obtained. The purified lipase showed maximum activity and stability at pH 5.0 and 30
°C. Ca
2+ had a stimulatory effect on the lipase activity compared to the other metal ions studied. The relative activity was enhanced with the addition of Triton X-100 with lower hydrophilic–lipophilic balance (HLB) value as 13.0 and DMSO with the lowest partition coefficient (log
P) value, as 1.378. The amino acid composition and the functional groups of lipase were confirmed by HPLC and FT-IR spectroscopy. The purified lipase had the highest hydrolytic activity towards slaughterhouse wastes and vegetable oils. This work provides a potential biocatalyst for the wide applications in oleochemical and biotechnological industries.
Background and Aim
Though rodenticidal hepatotoxicity is reported from India, there is no systematic study to assess its magnitude. This study aimed to assess exposure to rodenticide as a risk factor ...for acute hepatotoxicity in Tamil Nadu, India.
Methods
We retrospectively analyzed acute hepatotoxicity caused by ingestion of hepatotoxin or potentially hepatotoxic drug overdose across 15 hospitals in 6 districts of Tamil Nadu from 1 January 2019 to 30 June 2019. Study exclusion criteria were idiosyncratic drug-induced liver injury and chronic liver diseases.
Results
Of the 702 patients, 685 gave history of consuming rodenticide; hepatotoxicity in the other patients resulted from paracetamol overdose (
n
=10) and due to other drugs (
n
=7); 97% patients had a suicidal intent. Of 671 patients with complete data, ratio of number of patients with hepatotoxicity due to rodenticide to paracetamol overdose was 450:6 (i.e. 75:1). The 451 rodenticidal hepatotoxicity patients (255 males, 75% were 15–34 years old) underwent conservative management (
n
=396), plasma exchange (
n
=54) and plasma exchange followed by liver transplant (
n
=1); 159 patients (35%) had poor outcome (131 died, 28 discharged in moribund state). Based on our observations, we estimate a case burden of 1584 rodenticidal hepatotoxicity patients (95% CI: 265–6119) with poor outcome in 554 patients in Tamil Nadu from January 2019 to June 2019. Population attributable risk for rodenticide as cause of hepatotoxicity was 22.7%.
Conclusion
Rodenticide ingestion was an important cause of acute hepatotoxicity in Tamil Nadu. Most patients were young and one-third had poor outcome. Public health interventions are needed to address this.
