Worldwide, policies to combat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have led to a small decrease in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) mortality rate among young people. For greater policy ...efficacy, it is necessary to determine the influence of social determinants of health (SDHs) in each territory. The objective of this study was to spatially analyse the AIDS mortality rate among young people in a province of the Brazilian Amazon and the spatial variability of the rate promoted by SDHs. All reports of AIDS deaths between 2007 and 2018 among young people living in the state of Pará were included in the study. The mortality rate was analysed using spatial distribution and autocorrelation, spatial scanning, and geographically weighted regression (GWR). During the study period, there were 1,372 deaths from AIDS among young people with a territorial expansion. The spatial autocorrelation showed two high-high clusters in the period from 2007 to 2010, one formed by municipalities in south-eastern Pará and one in the metropolitan region of Belém, with only the latter remaining between 2011 and 2018. This region showed a higher spatial risk for AIDS mortality and was the only cluster with spatiotemporal risk in the 2013-2018 period. Spatial variability was promoted by the i) the youth homicide rate, ii) the elementary school dropout rate and iii) the number of families registered in the Unified Registry for Social Programs (CadÚnico). This study provides support for the implementation of effective focal policies to combat HIV and reduce the mortality rate among young people in Pará.
to analyze the knowledge and experience of undergraduate nursing students regarding infusion therapy and peripheral vascular access.
descriptive, cross-sectional, analytical study with 123 ...undergraduate nursing students who answered a semi-structured instrument.
the majority were women, with a median age of 51 years old; 87% considered the teaching received insufficient to perform in clinical practice. The mean overall knowledge score was 78.1 (SD± 8.97). The themes catheter flushing and lock (38.1%), catheter selection (34.2%), infusion equipment (30.9%) and insertion site (30.9%) presented a significant number of errors.
practical classes and execution of procedures in health services were predictors for a better knowledge about infusion therapy and vascular access by undergraduate nursing students.
The repercussions of the syphilis epidemic differ according to populations. Identifying and acknowledging the differences and specificities of populations is fundamental in the design and ...implementation of policies aimed at assisting the groups most vulnerable to syphilis.
To estimate the prevalence of antibodies against Treponema pallidum and associated vulnerability factors among riverside populations of a capital city in the Brazilian Amazon.
Cross-sectional study was conducted among residents of the periurban islands in Belém, northern Brazil, from August 2020 to January 2021. The inclusion criterion was being a resident of the riverside communities of the Combú Environmental Protection Area, aged 18 years or over. The participants responded to questionnaire and were tested for syphilis using rapid test. Data were analyzed using multiple logistic regression by Minitab version 20® software.
Overall, a total of 325 riverine were included. Age varied from 18 to 91 years (average 40 years). Prevalence of markers for syphilis was 5.9% (95% CI: 3.3%-8.4%). The multiple regression showed that as age increases, the chances of having syphilis also increase (p = 0.001; aOR: 1.04) and riverside dwellers with more than one sexual partner in the last 6 months had more than four chances of having syphilis compared to people who had only one sexual partner (p = 0.007; aOR: 4.20).
Syphilis circulates among traditional populations in the Amazon and is associated with factors of social and individual vulnerability.
Background: The main goal of this study was to analyze the HIV epidemic temporally and spatially among young people living in Pará, Brazil, from 2007 to 2018. Methods: For the temporal analysis, we ...employed an integrated autoregression of moving averages model associated with the seasonal trend using the LOESS decomposition method, which allowed for predictions to be made. In the spatial analysis, the techniques of autocorrelation, spatial and spatio-temporal risk analysis, and geographically weighted regression were used. Results: During the study period, there were 8143 notifications of HIV/AIDS cases. The temporal prediction indicated a trend of growth in the incidence rate in the 20–24-year-old group from January 2019 to December 2022 and a trend of stability in the 15- to 19-year-old and 25- to 29-year-old groups. There was a territorial expansion of the HIV epidemic in Pará. Novo Progresso and the Metropolitan Region of Belém (RMB) were the zones with the highest spatial and spatio-temporal risk for HIV. Social determinants including the Basic Education Development Index, the number of physicians per 10,000 inhabitants, and the municipal high school abandonment rate in the municipalities were associated with the risk of HIV/AIDS among young people in Pará. Conclusions: To eliminate HIV among young people in Pará, the access to treatment, diagnosis, and preventive healthcare services should be expanded. Sexual and reproductive health education should be reinforced in schools and communities. Furthermore, it is necessary to promote social equity and fight HIV stigma.
Abstract
Introduction
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is a relevant public health problem is worldwide. From the change in the health care of people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Primary ...Health Care (PHC), nurses gained autonomy in their workflow, which requires a significant technological arsenal for the planning, organization and functioning of services. It is believed that the development of a mobile application for the care/prevention of HIV will contribute to the strengthening of care, resulting in greater autonomy and empowerment of nurses in Primary Health Care.
Objective
To develop and validate a content script for a mobile application for nurses in PHC containing information about PLHIV management/care in PHC.
Methods
This is a methodological study developed in three phases: exploratory study, content elaboration process and validation by the 16 judges.
Results
The application was evaluated and validated satisfactorily in terms of content and appearance, with an average Content Validity Index (CVI) of 0.99 (99%), Item Content Validity Index (I-CVI) and Medium Content Validity (S-IVC/AVE) also obtained satisfactory levels.
Conclusions
The construction of the prototype of an application called LearnHIV, is considered a valid instrument in terms of content and appearance, according to the judges.
Trial registration
None because it is not an intervention study.
Background
Although considerable progress has been made over the last decades, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) incidence and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) mortality rates have ...remarkably increased in the Brazilian Amazon region. Here, we employed temporal analysis to determine the impact of public policies on the HIV epidemic in the state of Pará, Brazil, which has the second highest HIV incidence rate in the Amazon region.
Design and methods
This is an ecological study conducted in the state of Pará, employing secondary data of HIV/AIDS cases notified to the Information System for Notifiable Diseases, 2007– 2018. The following epidemiological variables were collected: year of notification, municipality of residence, age, sex, education, exposure category, and HIV/AIDS diagnostic criteria. The study population was composed of 21,504 HIV/AIDS cases. The HIV/AIDS incidence rates were analyzed employing the temporal trend analysis (TTA) followed by the chi-square test and residue analysis to determine the association between the epidemiological variables and time series periods.
Results
A total of 50% of the notifications were composed of AIDS cases. TTA identified two periods in HIV/AIDS incidence, with stabilization of cases in the first period (G1, 2007–2012) and an upward trend in the second period (G2, 2012–2018). The most prevalent epidemiological characteristics in G2 (versus G1) were as follows: young people, brown skin color, higher schooling, and homosexuals.
Conclusions
Public policy to control HIV infection in the Brazilian Amazon region has been partially effective. HIV screening tests and treatment should be made widely available to eradicate HIV infection in the Amazon region by 2030.

The search for cancer biomarkers is frequently based on comparisons between tumors and adjacent-to-tumor samples. However, even after histological confirmation of been free of cancer cells, these ...adjacent-to-tumor samples might harbor molecular alterations which are not sufficient to cause them to look like cancer, but can differentiate these cells from normal cells. When comparing them, potential biomarkers are missed, and mainly the opportunity of finding initial aberrations presents in both tumors and adjacent samples, but not in true normal samples from non-cancer patients, resulting in misinterpretations about the carcinogenic process. Nevertheless, collecting adjacent-to-tumor samples brings trumps to be explored. The addition of samples from non-cancer patients opens an opportunity to increase the finds of the molecular cascade of events in the carcinogenic process. Differences between normal samples and adjacent samples might represent the first steps of the carcinogenic process. Adding samples of non-cancer patients to the analysis of molecular alterations relevant to the carcinogenic process opens a new window of opportunities to the discovery of cancer biomarkers and molecular targets.
Background. Ameloblastoma (AMB) is a benign odontogenic tumour, with an aggressive local behaviour and a high rate of recurrence. Previous studies have demonstrated that hypoxia-induced factor alpha ...1 (HIF-1α) and activated caspase-3 contribute to tumour invasiveness and cytogenesis in ameloblastoma. Hypoxia increases HIF-1α levels, which triggers a number of signalling pathways. This paper aimed to present data in the study of hypoxia-activated signalling pathways that modulate proapoptotic and antiapoptotic events in AMB. Methods. Twenty cases of AMB and ten cases of dental follicle (DF) were used to analyse the immunoexpression of HIF-1α, p53, BNIP3, Bcl-2, IAP-2, GLUT1, and Bax. To contribute to the study, an analysis of expression and genetic interaction was performed using the cell line AME-1. Results. AMB and DF expressed the studied proteins. These proteins showed significantly greater immunoexpression in AMB compared with the DF (p<0.05). HIF-1α showed an important association with GLUT1, and a positive correlation was observed among p53, Bcl-2, and IAP-2. Transcriptomic analysis showed the significant expression of the studied proteins, and the network generated showed a direct association of HIF-1αF with GLUT1 (SLC2A1), TP53, and LDHA. Interestingly, GLUT1 also exhibited direct interaction with TP53 and LDHA. Conclusion. In AMB tumorigenesis, hypoxia is possibly related to antiapoptotic events, which suggests an important role for HIF-1α, GLUT1, Bcl-2, IAP-2, and possibly p53.
