The leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava (IVC) is a rare malignant tumour of the venous system. The recurrence of the tumour after previous initial surgical resection is common and occurs in more ...than half of the patients. Surgical resection of a local recurrence is poorly described in the literature and the available data are restricted to a small number of cases. We report the case of a 62 year old woman, who was referred to our vascular surgical unit for recurrence of a leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava, 35 months after diagnosis and initial surgical treatment. We performed an extensive local resection and circumferencial replacement of the IVC. 18 months after the second operation and adjuvant radiotherapy, the patient is in a very good physical condition and CT-scans show no evidence of tumour recurrence.
We report a case of acute esophageal necrosis after endovascular stenting for acute rupture of a thoracic aortic aneurysm into the mediastinum caused by mediastinal compartment syndrome and ...overstenting of intercostal arteries.

The on-line event reconstruction in ALICE is performed by the High Level Trigger, which should process up to 2000 events per second in proton-proton collisions and up to 300 central events per second ...in heavy-ion collisions, corresponding to an input data stream of 30 GB/s. In order to fulfill the time requirements, a fast on-line tracker has been developed. The algorithm combines a Cellular Automaton method being used for a fast pattern recognition and the Kalman Filter method for fitting of found trajectories and for the final track selection. The tracker was adapted to run on Graphics Processing Units (GPU) using the NVIDIA Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) framework. The implementation of the algorithm had to be adjusted at many points to allow for an efficient usage of the graphics cards. In particular, achieving a good overall workload for many processor cores, efficient transfer to and from the GPU, as well as optimized utilization of the different memories the GPU offers turned out to be critical. To cope with these problems a dynamic scheduler was introduced, which redistributes the workload among the processor cores. Additionally a pipeline was implemented so that the tracking on the GPU, the initialization and the output processed by the CPU, as well as the DMA transfer can overlap. The GPU tracking algorithm significantly outperforms the CPU version for large events while it entirely maintains its efficiency.
The introduction of the endovascular repair of aortic aneurysm (EVAR) in the clinical practice by Parodi was a milestone in the development of aortic surgery. This minimal invasive procedure promised ...a significant lower postoperative mortality and complications rate. Despite numerous controversies, the endovascular technique was wide accepted and fast implemented in the clinical practice. But the first prospective randomized trials showed that the benefit of the patients was limited and this innovative approach leads to particular postoperative problems. Due to a continuous improvement of the endovascular devices and increasing experience in endovascular treatment a lot of early problems have been resolved. The new generation of endografts makes possible the endovascular approach of aneurysm with shorter or angulated proximal neck. However, the anatomical suitability is still the most important limited factor of the endovascular treatment. An accurate analysis of suitability, the proper choice of the device and correct implantation allows good postoperative results. The significance of specific complications must be recognized in order to make the right surgical decision.
The ALICE High Level Trigger comprises a large computing cluster, dedicated interfaces and software applications. It allows on-line event reconstruction of the full data stream of the ALICE ...experiment at up to 25 GByte/s. The commissioning campaign has passed an important phase since the startup of the Large Hadron Collider in November 2009. The system has been transferred into continuous operation with focus on the event reconstruction and first simple trigger applications. The paper reports for the first time on the achieved event reconstruction performance in the ALICE central barrel region.

The upgrade of a legacy SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system belonging to an energy producer is a difficult task, mainly because one of the conditions to be met is the temporary ...simultaneous functioning of both the new and the old system while using some common parts of their architecture. This fact ensure the continuity of the producer's operation on the energy market, operation which also imposes special requirements regarding the system availability. The paper describes the way such a large upgrade project, critical for the organization core business, was successfully managed by the authors using an Agile approach. The implementation of the project took place during the 2003-2005 time period, at a Romanian energy producer site, using a distributed development team and having a "zero-defects" target at the software level.
