Well-known health-protective phytochemicals from muscadine grape and kale were stably complexed with food grade protein (soy or hemp protein isolates) to create biofortified food ingredients for use ...in a variety of convenient, portable food formulations. The bioactive (anti-inflammatory) potential, sensory attributes and proximates of the prepared formulations were evaluated in this study. Anti-inflammatory properties of the protein-phytoactive ingredient particles were contributed by the polyphenolic content (muscadine-protein) or the combination of polyphenol, carotenoid, and glucosinolate content (kale-protein aggregates). Phytoactive compounds from the fortified matrices suppressed at least two biomarkers of inflammation; most notable with the expression of chronic pro-inflammatory genes IL-6 and Mcp1. Sensory analysis suggested both sweet and savory functional food applications for the biofortified ingredients. Proximate analyses determined that fortification of the soy protein isolate (SPI) with muscadine or kale bioactives resulted in elevated dietary fibers, total carbohydrates, and free sugars, but did not increase calories/100 g dry matrix compared to unfortified SPI. Overall protein content in the aggregate matrices was about 37 % less (muscadine-SPI, kale-SPI and kale- HP50) or 17.6 % less (muscadine-HP50) on a weight basis, likely due to solubility of some proteins during preparation and partial displacement of some protein mass by the fruit and vegetable phytoactive constituents.
Abstract
Background
Due to unprecedented shortages in N95 filtering facepiece respirators, healthcare systems have explored N95 reprocessing. No single, full-scale reprocessing publication has ...reported an evaluation including multiple viruses, bacteria, and fungi along with respirator filtration and fit.
Methods
We explored reprocessing methods using new 3M 1860 N95 respirators, including moist (50%–75% relative humidity RH) heat (80–82°C for 30 minutes), ethylene oxide (EtO), pulsed xenon UV-C (UV-PX), hydrogen peroxide gas plasma (HPGP), and hydrogen peroxide vapor (HPV). Respirator samples were analyzed using 4 viruses (MS2, phi6, influenza A virus IAV, murine hepatitis virus MHV)), 3 bacteria (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Geobacillus stearothermophilus spores, and vegetative bacteria), and Aspergillus niger. Different application media were tested. Decontaminated respirators were evaluated for filtration integrity and fit.
Results
Heat with moderate RH most effectively inactivated virus, resulting in reductions of >6.6-log10 MS2, >6.7-log10 Phi6, >2.7-log10 MHV, and >3.9-log10 IAV and prokaryotes, except for G stearothermohphilus. Hydrogen peroxide vapor was moderately effective at inactivating tested viruses, resulting in 1.5- to >4-log10 observable inactivation. Staphylococcus aureus inactivation by HPV was limited. Filtration efficiency and proper fit were maintained after 5 cycles of heat with moderate RH and HPV. Although it was effective at decontamination, HPGP resulted in decreased filtration efficiency, and EtO treatment raised toxicity concerns. Observed virus inactivation varied depending upon the application media used.
Conclusions
Both moist heat and HPV are scalable N95 reprocessing options because they achieve high levels of biological indicator inactivation while maintaining respirator fit and integrity.

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 10 (SCA10) is an autosomal dominant ataxia caused by an ATTCT repeat expansion in an intron of the SCA10 gene. SCA10 has been reported only in Mexican families, in which ...the disease showed a combination of cerebellar ataxia and epilepsy. The authors report 28 SCA10 patients from five new Brazilian families. All 28 patients showed cerebellar ataxia without epilepsy, suggesting that the phenotypic expression of the SCA10 mutation differs between Brazilian and Mexican families.
The seasonal accumulation of biological foam on the activated sludge system of the Urbana-Champaign Sanitary District Northeast (UCSD-NE) wastewater treatment plant was investigated over an 8-year ...period by statistical analyses including path analysis, multivariate regression, and principal component analysis. Results of these analyses suggested that variation in the activated sludge reactor temperature and the use of a stream bypassing the primary clarifier were the two main factors determining the observed temporal foam profile. Characterization of the primary clarifier influent and effluent suggested the involvement of high lipid loading rates from the bypass stream in foam accumulation. In light of these results, it is hypothesized that increasing temperatures and lipid loading rates are responsible for foam formation through the same mechanism: the foam-forming microbial population is specialized in consuming lipids, substrates classified as slowly degradable. When the temperature increases, the rate of lipid hydrolysis becomes sufficiently high for this population to become abundant, accumulate on the surfaces of the aeration basins, and cause biological foaming.
An exhaustive experimental study of the high-frequency noise properties of MOSFET in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology is presented. Various gate geometries are fabricated to study the influence ...of effective channel length, gate finger width, and gate sheet resistivity on the four noise parameters. The high level of MOSFET sensitivity to the minimum noise matching condition is demonstrated. From experimental results, optimal ways to realize ultra low noise amplifiers are discussed. The capability of the fully depleted standard SOI CMOS process for realizing low-noise amplifiers for multigigahertz portable communication systems is shown.

Defense responses mediated by the genetically unlinked Cf-9 and Cf-2 genes were compared with those involving no Cf gene (Cf0). Compatible tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum)-Cladosporium fulvum ...intercellular washing fluids were injected into tomato cotyledons, and the kinetics of responses was monitored under conditions of 70 and 98% relative humidity. The latter conditions suppressed the normal macroscopic responses. For the Cf-9-Avr9 interaction, stomatal opening was induced within 3 to 4 h and after 9 h mesophyll cell death commenced. A burst of ethylene production occurred between 9 and 12.5 h and remained elevated. Free salicylic acid levels increased after 12 h, peaked at 24 h, and thereafter declined. For the Cf-2-Avr2 interaction, stomata became plugged after 8 h, and salicylic acid and ethylene levels increased by 12 and 18 h, respectively, and thereafter declined. Host cell death commenced around vascular tissue by 24 h. Cell death in both incompatible interactions was frequently preceded by cell enlargement. For Cf0-injected plants, no significant responses were detected. High humidity delayed and reduced the Cf-Avr-gene-dependent cell death and ethylene synthesis, whereas induced salicylic acid levels were unaffected for Cf-2-Avr2 and reduced in magnitude only for Cf-9-Avr9.
