Endemic Burkitt lymphoma (eBL) is an aggressive B cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma associated with antigenic stimulation from Plasmodium falciparum malaria. Whether eBL risk is related to malaria parasite ...density is unknown. To address this issue, children with eBL, asymptomatic and clinical malaria, as a surrogate of malaria parasite density, were assessed.
Malaria-related laboratory results (parasite density, haemoglobin, platelet count, and white cell count WBC) count) were compiled for 4019 eBL cases and 80,532 subjects evaluated for asymptomatic malaria or clinical malaria (severe malaria anaemia, hyperparasitaemia, cerebral malaria, malaria prostration, moderate malaria, and mild malaria) in 21 representative studies published in Africa (mostly East Africa) and 850 eBL cases and 2878 controls with primary data from the Epidemiology of Burkitt Lymphoma in East African Children and Minors (EMBLEM) case-control study in Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya. The average values of malaria-related laboratory results were computed by condition and trends across single-year age groups were assessed using regression and spline models.
Overall, malaria infection or malaria was diagnosed in 37,089 of children compiled from the literature. Children with eBL and asymptomatic parasitaemia/antigenaemia, but not those with clinical malaria, were closest in their mean age (age 7.1-7.2 vs. 7.4-9.8 years), haemoglobin level (10.0-10.4 vs. 11.7-12.3 g/dL), malaria parasite density (2800 vs. 1827-7780 parasites/µL), platelet count (347,000-353,000 vs. 244,000-306,000 platelets/µL), and WBC count (8180-8890 vs. 7100-7410 cells/µL). Parasite density in these two groups peaked between four to five years, then decreased steadily thereafter; conversely, haemoglobin showed a corresponding increase with age. Children with clinical malaria were markedly different: all had an average age below 5 years, had dramatically elevated parasite density (13,905-869,000 parasites/µL) and dramatically decreased platelet count (< 159,000 platelets/µL) and haemoglobin (< 7 g/dL).
eBL and asymptomatic parasitaemia/antigenaemia, but not clinical malaria, were the most similar conditions with respect to mean age and malaria-related laboratory results. These results suggest that children with asymptomatic parasitaemia/antigenaemia may be the population at risk of eBL.
In 1973–74, a polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) flame retardant mixture was shipped to Michigan livestock feed mills in place of a nutritional supplement and contaminated the food supply. Following the ...accident, the Michigan PBB Registry was established to study the long-term health effects of halogenated compounds and is now led by a community-academic partnership. PBB exposure is associated with altered DNA methylation in sperm, which may lead to adverse birth outcomes in children whose fathers have increased levels of serum PBB or polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB). Paternal PBB and PCB levels of men enrolled in the Michigan PBB Registry (n = 155) were analyzed against matched offspring birthweight and gestational age (n = 336). Birthweight and gestational age were dichotomized at the 25th percentile and 37 weeks, respectively, and paternal PBB and PCB levels were examined as continuous measures and divided into tertiles. Associations of offspring birthweight and gestational age with paternal PBB and PCB serum concentrations were modeled using multivariable linear spline and log-risk regression, adjusting for family clustering, paternal health and lifestyle factors, maternal PBB, and PCB serum concentrations, sex, and offspring gestational age (for birthweight). Fathers in the middle and upper PBB and PCB tertiles had increased risks for lowest quartile birthweight compared to the first tertile, with adjusted risk ratios (aRR) = 1.67 (95% CI: 0.93, 2.99) and aRR = 2.06 (95% CI: 1.12, 3.79) for PBB, and aRR = 1.47 (95% CI: 0.79, 2.75) and aRR = 1.34 (95% CI: 0.70, 2.54) for PCB, respectively. Elevated paternal PBB levels were not associated with an increased risk for preterm birth, while PCB levels were associated with a small, but not significant, decrease in gestational age, β = -0.37 (95% CI: -0.76, 0.03) weeks per log unit increase PCB. The findings suggest that increased paternal PBB and PCB levels negatively impact offspring birthweight, and paternal PCB levels may negatively impact gestational age.

Grad vary substantially among models, adversely affecting planning decisions that need to be resilient to adverse risks, such as increased flooding. This study seeks to understand the causes of these projection uncertainties and finds three key drivers. The first is intermodel variability in remote warming, which has strongest impact on the eastern Sahel, decaying toward the west. Second, and most important, a warming–advection–circulation feedback in a narrow band along the southern Sahara varies in strength between models. Third, variations in southern Saharan evaporative anomalies weakly affect ΔT
Grad, although for an outlier model these are sufficiently substantive to reduce warming here to below that of the global mean. Together these uncertain mechanisms lead to uncertain southern Saharan/northern Sahelian warming, causing the bulk of large intermodel variations in ΔT
Grad. In the southern Sahel, a local negative feedback limits the contribution to uncertainties in ΔT

Grad projection uncertainties provides understanding that can be used, in combination with further research, to constrain projections of severe Sahelian storm activity.
Previous studies have suggested a dopaminergic regulation of eye blink rates in human and nonhuman primates. Blockade of either dopamine (DA) D1 or DA D2 receptors or DA depletion induced by the ...dopaminergic neurotoxin MPTP both decrease spontaneous eye blink rates in monkeys. MPTP-induced decreases in blink rates can be reversed by administration of the full efficacy D1 agonist dihydrexidine, which has also been found to have dramatic antiparkinsonian effects in MPTP-treated animals. Increases in blink rates can also be induced by D1 and D2 agonists in normal animals. In the current study, we have investigated whether blink rates correlate with concentrations of DA or HVA and/or HVA:DA ratios in specific brain regions in MPTP-treated monkeys. Furthermore, the potential relationship between the severity of behavioral indices of parkinsonism and blink rates were examined. We found that (1) blink rates significantly correlate positively with concentration of DA and inversely with HVA:DA ratios in the rostral portion of the ventromedial body of the caudate nucleus (CD), but not other subcortical regions, and (2) that severity of parkinsonism was inversely correlated with blink rate. These data support a dopaminergic regulation of blink rate and suggest that the ventromedial region of the body of the CD may be critically involved in regulation of blink rate.
An E1, E3 deleted adenovirus vector, serotype 5, carrying the marker gene LacZ was bilaterally microinfused into the caudate nuclei of 10 St Kitts green monkeys. The location and number of cells ...expressing transgene and host immunologic response were evaluated at 1 week (n = 2) and 1 month (n = 8) following vector infusion. A large number of cells expressed beta-galactosidase in some monkeys, exceeding 600000 in one monkey, but no expression was seen in three of 10. All monkeys had positive adenoviral antibody titers before vector infusion, indicating the possibility of previous exposure to some adenovirus, but only one showed a significant increase in titer afterwards. Inflammatory cell markers revealed an inverse correlation between transgene expression and the extent of inflammatory response. Dexamethasone administered immediately before and for 8 days following vector delivery, however, had no effect on transgene expression. The demonstration of significant inflammatory responses in the brain of some individual primates, including demyelination, indicates the need for new generations of adenovirus vectors, or the successful suppression of inflammatory responses, before this vector is suitable for non-cytotoxic clinical applications in the CNS.
Previous studies have revealed the involvement of a dopaminergic link in the regulation of spontaneous eye blink rate in primates. Based on the effect of dopamine D2 receptor-selective drugs and the ...anecdotal failure of the partial D1 agonist, SKF 38393, to alter blink rate in monkeys, it was assumed that D1 dopamine receptors did not control blink rate. The recent availability of dihydrexidine, a full D1 agonist, prompted us to reevaluate the role of D1 and D2 receptors in the regulation of blink rate. African green monkeys (n = 5) were used in all studies. Dihydrexidine produced a rapid and dose-dependent (up to 1 mg/kg, i.m.) increase in blink rate. The elevation in blink rate elicited by 0.3 mg/kg dihydrexidine was completely reversed by prior administration of a specific D1 antagonist, SCH 23390 (0.01 mg/kg, i.m.), but was unaffected by prior administration of a specific D2 antagonist, remoxipride (1 mg/kg, i.m.). Treatment with the specific D2 agonist, (+)-4-propyl-9-hydroxynaphthoxazine, led to a rapid and dose-dependent (up to 0.01 mg/kg, i.m.) increase in blink rate. The raised blink rate produced by (+)-4-propyl-9-hydroxynaphthoxazine (0.001 mg/kg) was abolished by pretreatment with remoxipride, but was not influenced by pretreatment with SCH 23390. These data indicate that spontaneous blink rate in the primate can be regulated by both D1 and D2 dopamine receptors. Furthermore, the receptor subtypes appear to affect blink rate in the same direction, yet function independently. Measurement of blink rate may provide a noninvasive method to assess the potency and selectivity of dopamine agonists and antagonists in primates.
Rare earth elements have generally not been thought to have a biological role. However, recent work has demonstrated that the light REEs (LREEs: La, Ce, Pr, and Nd) are essential for at least some ...methanotrophs, being co-factors in the XoxF type of methanol dehydrogenase (MDH). We show here that dissolved LREEs were significantly removed in a submerged plume of methane-rich water during the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) well blowout. Furthermore, incubation experiments conducted with naturally methane-enriched waters from hydrocarbon seeps in the vicinity of the DWH wellhead also showed LREE removal concurrent with methane consumption. Metagenomic sequencing of incubation samples revealed that LREE-containing MDHs were present. Our field and laboratory observations provide further insight into the biochemical pathways of methanotrophy during the DWH blowout. Additionally, our results are the first observations of direct biological alteration of REE distributions in oceanic systems. In view of the ubiquity of LREE-containing MDHs in oceanic systems, our results suggest that biological uptake of LREEs is an overlooked aspect of the oceanic geochemistry of this group of elements previously thought to be biologically inactive and an unresolved factor in the flux of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, from the ocean.
Eye blink rates were studied in African green monkeys following relatively specific destruction of substantia nigra and its dopamine projections with the neurotoxin, ...1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP). Monkeys treated with MPTP had a significantly lower blink rate than controls over a period from two to five and a half months after treatment. Furthermore, the degree of parkinsonism expressed in treated animals was inversely correlated with blink rate. Pharmacologic studies further supported the role of dopamine receptors in the regulation of blink rate. PHNO (4-propyl-9-hydroxynaphoxazine), a potent and highly specific D2 agonist, effective in alleviating parkinsonism, caused a significant transient increase in blink rate, while sulpiride, a D2 antagonist, caused a decrease and blocked the effect of PHNO. Apomorphine and haloperidol, although less specific, had potent and predictable effects based on their interactions with dopamine systems. Blink rate may provide a nonintrusive measure of central dopamine activity that would help to evaluate the progress of Parkinson's disease or treatments which attempt to restore dopamine function.
